He thinks daytime talk shows are a disgrace. He wants paid political commercials eliminated.

And, he says, cameras should be kept out of courtrooms. Hewitt, 73, is one of the giants of the TV industry. He created "60 Minutes" in 1968 and has produced it ever since, earning more than $1.5 billion in profits for CBS, by his own estimate? Hewitt also has produced CBS's evening news, political convention coverage and, among other things, the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon debates. Ordinarily, Hewitt operates behind the scenes, but when he talks, he speaks his mind, bluntly. That he did Tuesday before an audience at the National Press Club.

He spoke proudly of "60 Minutes" and its crew, noting, accurately, that the show has remained a hit without doing sleazy or sensational stories. But, he said, the pressures to maximize profits have all but obliterated the values of taste and class that once helped shape what's on the air. Now there seems to be no shame, he said. "Every day there's a new talk show, and they deal with subjects like 'I had an affair with my 'I slept with my grandmother Hewitt said. "One of the things that I don't understand is that the same men and women who sit on the boards of directors of concert orchestras, art museums, hospitals, universities, sit on the boards of broadcasting companies that put this on the air.

Doesn't anybody ever get up in a board meeting and say, 'What are we doing to this country? Why are we doing he said. Hewitt was equally critical of the political advertising that makes millions of dollars for the television industry, but cheapens political debate. "How about outlawing paid political commercials?" he said. "No longer would politicians sell favors to lobbyists to get the money to pay for TV time." "Aside from freeing us from the clutches of lobbyists tobacco and otherwise outlawing political ads would raise the quality of the dialogue," he said. "I don't know about you, but I'm never sure whether I'm voting for a candidate or a copywriter." As for the constitutional arguments against banning political ads, Hewitt said: "Television doesn't take rette commercials or hard liquor com- TED mercials.

How about their First Amendment rights?" Hewitt also restated his case against putting cameras in courtrooms, using the OJ. Simpson trial as his primary piece of evidence. He said: "This year's box office smash was the television opus, 'Who Killed Ron and It wasn't too long ago that the television box office smash was 'Who killed J.R.?' Television does have a way, doesn't it, of making crime pay." If trials were broadcast without commercials, he said, the coverage wouldn't be objectionable. But the spectacle of networks like CNN, Court TV and Entertainment profiting from the Simpson trial is offensive, he said. Hewitt wasn't indiscriminately critical of his business.

He had praise for NBC anchors Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric, saying they would have done a good job of interviewing Simpson. He called himself a "big fan" of "ABC News" anchor Peter Jennings. And he said "Ted Koppel's 'Nightline' is something that Ed Murrow couldn't have done any better than Ted does it." Still, it's ironic to hear Don Hewitt lamenting the fact that television news has become too money-driven since he, arguably, did as much as anybody to commercialize the business. Not until Hewitt created "60 Minutes" did people running the networks realize they could package news programming in entertaining ways, to draw big audiences and make big profits. To his credit, when asked whether he's partly to blame for the state of network news, Hewitt doesn't duck his share of responsibility.

"I guess everybody at some point in life created a monster, and 1 was in this competitive business and created a monster," he said. "I did things in those days that if somebody who worked for me did them today, I'd fire him. This one's sealed tighter than Tup-perware, but "ET" sources confirm that Tesh and Paramount agreed over the summer to forgo their respective one-year extension options and part company by June, at the latest.

Prior to June, Paramount can pull the plug with 30 days' notice, sources add. For the record, the principals aren't talking that way. Tesh, Mary Hart's on-air partner since 1986 and an accomplished musician, says he's "very happy" at "ET" and plans to stay "as long as they want me. I see no reason we can't continue. They've been more than supportive of my music.

There were some growing pains, but everybody is fine now." Ditto, says Paramount superflack Wentworth. "At this point, John and Paramount have struck a pretty nice balance between his hosting duties and his music career. I see no reason for this to change now or in the future." That "pretty nice balance" went to court in late May, when Paramount? filed a restraining order to prevent Tesh from taking three months off for his "Red Rocks" American tour. The order was denied, and a hearing was set for June 6. The two sides reached a compromise less than a week later instead of 12 consecutive weeks off, Tesh would take a total of eight weeks at various times from June through September.

Had the injunction stuck, Tesh would have toured anyway, he said at the time. "I would have been in contempt of court." Sources Close to Tesh say he's so bitter about the experience that he will walk away from his estimated $1 million salary and support himself exclusively on his music, labeled "Yanni lite" by less charitable critics.
