while Dave Nicely sprang on the turnkey and held him till his brother Joe fired two bullets into his left side CLOSE TO HIS HEART The two murderers each with a pair of revolvers dashed through the jail out into tlie yard and broke for a strip of woodland on the outskirts of the town The alarm was given and citizens by the score many of them mounted on fleet horses started in pursuit The woods was quickly surrounded aud a scouring party started through it Dave was discovered up a tree and the pursuasive powers of several guns had to be brought to bear upon him before he would agree to come age of superstition and belief in manisfesta tions of the supernatural ou earth had ceased but from the following clipped from the Indiana Messenger such would seem not to be the ease Last Thursday evening a party of young folks diove from here toSheloc ta to indulge iu chicken and waffles The party comprised half a dozen young men and as many maidens and they indulged in the merriest klad of banter duriug the trip They arrived on tbeir return home at the foot of bill three miles west of town about the witching hour of miduigbt Half a century ago ou that hill so tradition runs a drover returning home from Philadelphia with saddle bags well filled witli gold as the return for a drove of cattle he had sold was waylaid at the darkest point of the hill dragged from his horse and mur dered and his body interred in the gloomiest part of a deep ravine that runs parallel with the road or mauy years thereafter ou gloomy nights belated travelers over the road reported seeing the uneasy spirit of the deceased drover floating about the spot where he was so cruelly done to death and hill became noted as the haunt of a ghost With differ eut variations this tale has been told and retold and timid people have not cared to pass the spot after nightfull Well as the waffle and chicken eaters started up the billon the night named conversation naturally drifted into the ghost channel Two or three of the young ladies pooh hoobed the idea of there being any such thing as ghosts and expressed astrong desire to see something of the kind Some of the young fellows too assumed au air of bravado and laughed long and loud as the horses proceeded slowly up the hill and none so loud or so boisterous as Tom Hildebrand whose only idea of spirits seemed to he of the kind that contribute to the revenues of the gov ernment Suddenly of course sud the young lady in the front carriage beheld dancing in the air a short distance from the roadside the sheeted form of a man One awful soul rending shriek she uttered and then collapsed iu the bottom of the buggy Her escort cast a frightened glance down into (he dusky wood saw the moving white figure aud then lashed his horses into a furious pace to escape tlie grasp of the demon As each buggy came along the occu pants beheld the ghost silently sway ing back aud forward and the drivers dashed into a mad run to escape But Tom Hildebrand he was brave He sprang from his buggy and from the clutches of his girl and started into the woods to investigate Tlie figure of tlie ghost bung motionless in mid air untill Tom got within a rod or two of it when it gave a sudden leap 'Thomas uttered a yell of dismay and made a home run for his buggy which clambering into with astounding cel erity he drove at a breakneck pace clear into town never looking back to see if the disturbed spirit was in pur suit or not Arriving home several of the girls fell on tbeir knees and prayed loud aud long while others got be tween the sheets aud covered their heads A couple of boys disappointed at not getting an invitation to the waffle entertainment drove out to hill on the eventful evening strung a wire between too trees a little ways from tne road made a man of straw wrapped it in white paper and fasten ed the ghost to the wire with strings aud pulleys so as to move it back and forward This was the real ghost but you make either Tom Hilde brand or Tom white and all the girls believe but what it was the sheeted dead they gazed upon The Indiana County Medical Soci ety met in Indiana on the 10th hist After the general routine of Saturday owing ro import i ant matters demanding his attention here Before going he tendered the appointment of Commissioner of Pen sions to Major William Warner of Missouri ex Congressman and ex Commander ln Chief of the A Major Warner is here but has not yet decided to accept tlie position and many of ills friends say that his accept ance is extremely doubtful as he can not afford to give up his present large income from his legal practice for the salary of Commissioner of Pensions $4000 per annum However great political pressure is being brought to bear upon him and he may be made to see that it is bis duty to accept I am in a position to state positively that whether Major Warner accepts or not the President has fully decided that he will give the position to a rep resentative member of the A so that the veterans may rest assured that tbeir interests will be looked after Although several days old the resig nation of Commissioner Tanner is still the all absorbing topic of conver sation here All sorts of opinions are expressed some of them pretty severe on Secretary Noble but tlie prevailing impression is that Mr Tan ner in tendering his resignation took the manliest way of releiving the President of embarrassment After all is said that can be said with any degree of certainty the letter of Mr Tanner transmitting his resignation and that of the President accepting the same presents tlie matter in a light that is creditable to both of them Here are the letters COMMISSIONER LETTER Department of the Interior Bureau of Pensions Washington Sept 12 1889 To the President 1 The differences which exist between the Secretary of the Interior and myselt as to tne policy to De pursued in the administration of' the Pension Bureau have reached a stage which threatens to embarrass you to an ex tent which I feel I should not call upon you to suffer and as the invest igation into the affairs of the Bureau have been completed and I am as sured both by yourself and by tlie Secretary of tlie Interior contains no reflection on my integrity as an indi vidual or as au officer I herewith place my resignation in your hands to take effect at your pleasure to the end that you may be relieved of any further embarrassment in the matter Very respectfully yours James Tanner Commissioner THE PRESIDENT'S REPLY Executive Mansion Washington Sept 12 1889 Hon James Tanner Commissioner of Pensions Dear Sir Your Letter tendering your resignation of tlie office of Com missioner of Pensions lias been re ceived and your resignation is aceep ted to take effect on the appointment and qualification of your successor I do not think it necessary in the cor respondence to discuss the causes which have tad to the present attitude of affairs in the Pension Office You have been kindly aud fully advised of my views upon most of matters It gives me pleasure add that so far as I am advised your honesty lias not at any time been called into ques tion aud I beg to renew the expression of my personal good ill Very Truly Yours Benjamin Harrison Mr Tanner has been tendered a Marsbalsbip in New York which he declined It is thought that the President will appoint him Recorder of Deeds in this city and that he will accept the appointment although some of bis friends say that be will not again accept office under the pres ent Administration Secretary Noble declines to at pres ent make public either the report of the commission which investigated the Pension Office or his correspond ence with Commissioner Tanner but they are certain to be brought out when Congress meets if not before as a Congressional investigation of the whole matter is now inevitable And it is more than probable that the Re publicans will forestall Democratic action by themselves taking the initia tory step thereto Secretary Windom lias given notice that lie will receive no more callers until his annual report is completed Attorney Goleral Miller has gone to Indianapolis to many of our veterans here to Gettys burg for the celebration on September 11 and 12 Did Mr Oursler not par tieipate in that battle? When and where did Mr Ouisler secure the title of by which be is com nionly called among his friends? These questions were raised during a discussion among several gentlemen here to day but no person in the party was able te answer them Will you kindly give us some information re garding the same? An Inquirer Latrobe Pa Sept 13 1SS9 Reference to History of Penn sylvania Volunteers ought to furnish some lighten the interrogatories pro pounded by Me do not have a copy of that work at hand and find ourselves therefore unable to make positive answers to the ques tions advanced It is presumed how ever that the gentleman named did not participate in the battle of Gettys burg Had he done so lie would likely have received transportation as the General Assembly made pro vision for all Pennsylvania soldiers who took part in that great engage ment to le conveyed to Gettysburg for the reunion on September 11 and 12 1889 A reputable aud well in formed gentleman who saw active service duriug the war aud of whom we souglit light on tlie above question states that he knows of no battle or skirmish in which Mr Oursler took part during tlie Rebellion The prom inence which Mr Oursler has assumed In all local reunions projects for building monuments etc would naturally lead one to believe that he was thoroughly battle scarred Contrary information was no less sur prising to us than it will be no doubt to many others If the gentleman is misrepresented in this matter we shall gladly set him right ou evidence to that effect As to bow the military title referred to was secure we do not know The above extract from the West moreland Democrat would seem to in dicate that the canvass for Sheriff iu Westmoreland county is being con ducted on military lines The old adage that those who occupy glass houses should refrain from throwing stones" would seem to be especially applicable in the present case As Col Oursler went to Gettysburg several days previous totbe reunion to attend to tlie erection of monuments for which the firm of Oursler Brothers had the contract it might be pertinent to inquire if the name of his opponent Mr Clawson is carved in enduring granite or moulded in bronze any where on eartli as having by word or act done anything to perpetuate th institutions of the laud that gave him birth If the test of fitms for th offlce of Sheriff be a military one Oursler would seem to have tlie ad vantage having shut up his shop on three different occasions to take up arms in defense of bis country quirer" might do the voters of old Westmoreland a kindness by furnish ing them the record of the two aspir ants especially during ths dark days of '63 REAL ESTATE or Sale BY
