TVRADIO: CBS (Channel 2 in Detroit); WJR 760-AM. KNOW THE FOE: Although the Steelers are on their way to what could be their worst season since they went 5-9 in 1970, they gave the Chicago Bears a scare Sunday. Chicago had to come from behind to beat the Steelers on a field goal In overtime after trailing through much of the second half. The Steelers' big problem has been lack of firepower. The only AFC team scoring fewer points than the Steelers (216) this season is Indianapolis (147).

(AP) The inaugural Christa McAulif fe Futures Golf Classic, a memorial to the New Hampshire school teacher who died last January in the Challenger space shuttle accident, will be held July 17-19 at the Honey Run Country Club. The 54-hole event, one of 26 stops on the women's golf tour, will benefit the Christa McAuliffe Scholarship Fund. The fund provides financial assistance for students interested in pursuing teaching careers.

Orioles drop pitcher; roster at 39 BALTIMORE (AP) The Baltimore Orioles have removed pitcher Mike Skinner from the roster, leaving the team with only 39 players, general manager Hank Peters announced Tuesday. Skinner has been assigned to Rochester of the International League, Peters announced. The team now is one player below the allowable roster limit of 40. By MATT FIORITO Fret Prest Spofti Writer Monday night, Leroy Bornhop had a fever. Tuesday afternoon, he was just hot.

Bornhop, a seven-year veteran and non-winner on the Pro Bowlers Association tour, rolled 1,425, an average of 237.5, for the first-round lead in the Budweiser Touring Players Championship at Taylor Lanes. Bornhop, from St. Charles, had an eight-pin lead over Del Ballard (1,4 17) and was 34 pins ahead of Venezuela's Amleto Monacelli Jim Pencak, who was third in the Eudweiser Open at Taylor Lanes last December and third at the Molson Golden Challenge in Windsor in August, was fourth at 1,384, and Jimmy Certain was fifth at 1,384. "I was feeling sick and had a fever last night in the pro-ams," said Bornhop, who totaled 596 for his three games with the amateurs. "But for some reason, I got my strength back." With another six-round qualifying block ahead of him Tuesday night, Bornhop wasn't getting too excited about leading after the first round.

"It's nothing special, I just have the jump on everybody." Bornhop has had leads before, but hasn't gone the distance, most notably in the 1 984 True Value Open when he was the top qualifier but lost the final game to Ted Hannahs. Bornhop's best finish this year was third in the Miller Lite Open in Cleveland and he has won $27,672. He needs a win here, in the final PBA tournament of the year, to avoid having to drop down into the "rabbit" qualifying squads next year. The big names were taking a beating. Walter Ray Williams, the leading money on the tour this year was 21st at 1,306.

Pete Weber, who won the Budweiser Open here last year, was 55th at Don Genalo, who won at Windsor was 82d at 1,207, and Steve the Redskins an NFC wild-card berth. The winner of Sunday's Giants-Redskins game likely will win the East, with the loser becoming the home wildcard team. The Rams or 49ers probably will win the West, with the loser a possible wild-card team. In the AFC, no playoff spots have been clinched. New England (10-3), the New York Jets (10-3), Denver (10-3), Cleveland (9-4), Cincinnati (8-5), Los Angeles Raiders (8-5), Kansas City (7-6), Seattle (7-6) and Miami (6-7) are all in the hunt.

Ten teams make the playoffs the six division champions and two wild-card teams from each conference. AFC PLAYERS: Quarterback John Elway, who threw three touchdown passes Sunday in the Denver Broncos' 34-28 NFL victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, was named on as the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, while Buffalo cornerback Charles Romes won defensive honors. Elway, who had gone without a touchdown pass in his three previous games, completed 22 of 34 passes for 228 yards and also ran for 41 yards, including a 17-yard gain on a quarterback draw with 1:55 remaining that put the game away. Romes, a 10-year veteran, intercepted two passes in the end zone to preserve Buffalo's 17-14 win in Kansas City that ended the Bills' 22-game road losing streak, one short of the NFL record. CHICAGO: Bears linebacker Oils Wilson was suspended for one game without pay "as a result of his flagrant forearm blow to the jaw" of Pittsburgh wide receiver Louis Llpps last Sunday, commissioner Pete Rozelle said.

Rozelle said Wilson must sit out the Dec. 7 game against Tampa Bay. If Wilson decides to appeal, Rozelle said he will arrange a hearing promptly after receiving written notification. Bears spokesman Jim Carr said Wilson learned of the suspension Tuesday afternoon and hadn't informed the club whether he would appeal. "He'll probably think it over," Carr said, DALLAS: Cowboys poach Tom Landry said he isn't certain about his future with the team, even if they make the NFL playoffs by winning their last three games.

Landry, who has coached the Cowboys for their entire 26-year history, said, "I don't know what I'll teel after the next three games. I do enjoy challenges and there's a big one coming up." GREEN BAY: Rozelle rejected Green Bay Packer Charles Martin's appeal of his two-game suspension lor slamming Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon to the turf after a play ended last month. collgga polls 1984 GRAND MARQUIS BROUGHAM LS White on while, tilt, cruise, alum, this one is uncomparablel $7495 1985 MARK VII LSC Gold metallic, leather, alum, luxury unlimited! $1 2,995 1985 Z-28 CAMAR0 8,000 one owner miles, t-tops, tilt, cruise, p. windows. Hawaii is a good team, so deep down we all understand why the coaches are pushing us so hard.

This way, we'll keep from getting sunburned before the game and burned during it." Anxious vigil: It will be a disappointing afternoon for several Wolverines when Schembecher posts the names of only 70 of the 110 Wolverines that will make the Hawaii trip. "You can only take 70 for non-conference games," Schembechler said. "We've got 90 grant-in-aid players and about 20 walk-ons, so I think the younger kids will understand. But we get to take 95(players) to the Rose Bowl, and that's just about everybody." Defensive back Ken Mouton is out for the season (knee), and fullback Gerald White (knee bruise) is questionable for Hawaii but should play in the Rose Bowl Schembechler, Rivers and quarterback Jim Harbaugh will return to Honolulu's Aloha Stadium Jan. 8 for the Hula Bowl.

Schembechler will coach the East team that includes Rivers and Harbaugh, and his assistants are Louisiana State's Bill Arnsparger and Florida State's Bobby Bowden. BOXING, from Page 1D Darnell (20-0-1 with 18 knockouts) will meet James Williams of Phoenix in a preliminary bout on Friday's Showtime television showdown in Las Vegas involving Kronk's Jimmy Paul and Duane Thomas. "Williams is only 8-7," Corradi said, "but we're told he's much tougher than that. I hope so, because we want to get a better feel of high good Darnell can be.

"We had him working at the Abercrombie ranch in Texas for about a month, and it really helped. The other day he went five rounds with Lindell Holmes (a leading contender), and he punched holes in him." Darnell, who lives in Livonia, will have his 12th fight of the year Friday, and it will be his last preliminary, Corradi said. "He's ready to move up," the manager said. "The next time he fights in Atlantic City, it will be as a main eventer." Paul and Thomas will try to sweep Greg Haugen and John Mugabi in their twin title bouts. It isn't likely.

Paul is a 3-1 favorite to retain his International Boxing Federation lightweight belt in a 1 2-round bout with Haugen, but Thomas is a 3-1 underdog in his fight with Mugabi for the World Boxing Council super-middleweight title vacated by Thomas Hearns. 1985 FLEETWOOD BROUGHAM D'ELEGANCE 10,000 miles, wire wheels, leather, better than newl $17,995 1981 SEVILLE Two tone, air, stereo, tilt, cruise, luxury uncomparable. $8995 1984 CORVETTE air, stereo, leather, BOSE, look at this onel $14.995 1984 FIER0SE air, stereo, 20,000 miles on this sport machlnel $6395 1984 ELDORADO Hazelwood metallic, leather, wires, lo miles, how about this one. 1,995 JIIBQEflHIQiS and SGll through Free Press Want Ads.
