Frt 1 Sat "IT" li 29 30 31 Mav Ott. Tor. 7:30 7:30 7:30 cry ctv tv t's a bit like asking Scott Borek to succeed Vince Lombardi after most of the Packers also packed and left. Borek, a Massachusetts native who joined Lake Superior State last season as an assistant coach, was in the right place and position early last summer. That's when Jeff Jackson, who took the Lakers to NCAA titles in 1992 and '94, left to become coach of the U.S.

national team. And Borek got the big break. don't want to happen, happened." The Vipers got four shots in the first period and trailed, 4-0. After Len Barrie scored at 1:31, the Vipers fell behind, 3-0, in 25 seconds when they let an opponent stand near; the net unprotected. Brian Sullivan-' scored at 10:05 and former Viper Lonnie Loach at 10:30.

Scott Hollis' goal at 14:23 finished; the flurry. The Vipers (7-4-1) blew a chance to-turn around the game early in the second period during a 6:37 power play, including 1:33 with a two-man. advantage. The third period produced 26 shots' and goals from Simon at 9:46 and. Samsonov at 10:41, but did little more than prevent the Vipers from suffering their first-ever shutout at home.

Detroit was l-for-7 on the power play and killed four of five by the. Dragons (8-3). Rich Parent made 18 saves, and Bruce Racine stopped 42 shots for San Antonio, Vipers left wing Steve Walker suffered a knee injury. STEVE CROWE College hockey Also gone with last season, when the Lakers finished 30-8-2, were three 50-point producers: Brian Felsner, Sean Tal-laire and Keith Aldridge. Only five players with 20 or more points last season returned.

So far, the new-look Lakers have left the gate slowly. They are 1-4-1, 0-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association after finishing in a first-place tie with Michigan last season. "If this was March," and working with Jeff for a year and in the guys' eyes, I think, almost being selected by Jeff for the job has helped right from the beginning. "And also, we've got 13 players I recruited, so that helps a lot, too." Because junior goalie John Grahame is about the only impact player back, Borek said, the cast of newcomers is trying too hard. "We've got a whole new group trying to replace the guys who were winning games for us a year ago," Borek said.

"And I think they've put a little too much pressure on themselves. At this point, maybe my highest priority is trying to turn the pressure cooker off, if you will." FOREVER BLUE: "Our Day Will Come," a 45-minute video chronicling last season's NCAA Michigan title and the Red Bererwon rebuilding that made it possible, is on sale now. Red Wings radio announcer Ken Kal, formerly voice of the Wolverines, narrates. The video, whose suggested price is $19.95, is on sale at M-Den stores in the Ann Arbor area, and at all Michigan games at Joe Louis Arena. To order by phone, call 1-800-346-2583.

GREEN-BLUE ll: Michigan and Michigan State will be figuratively fighting on two fronts Saturday. A few hours after the football showdown, the schools do hockey battle at Michigan State's Munn Arena. Both are 2-0 in CCHA games, in a three-way tie for second with Bowling Green. U-M (5-0) has won 14 straight dating to last season, one short of the school record set in 1990-91. The Spartans (3-2) are coming off two non-league road losses last weekend, 4-3 at Boston College and 6-5 at Northeastern.

MSU hosts Bowling Green (6-0) Friday, when U-M travels to Notre Dame (2-1-1). POU-POURI: Topped by Michigan, the three recognized national polls College Hockey USA (coaches), USA TodayAmerican Hockey Magazine and WMPL-AM of Hancock agree on their top fours: U-M is followed by Vermont (2-0), Bowling Green and Boston (1-1). MSU is ninth in the USA Today poll, 10th in WMPL's. CCHA leader Miami, Ohio (6-1) is ranked 10th by WMPL, 12th by USA Today, and is not in the College Hockey USA's top 10. Borek said, "I'd be very down. Obviously, we'd love to have more wins at this point. But we're making good progress and being dealt some tough luck. We just need to continue to work things out, and I think we're doing it." To join Jackson's staff, Borek left after three seasons as coach at Colby College, an NCAA Division III school in Waterville, Maine. Borek rode the White Mules from a 6-17-1 record his first season to 14-8-2 his last, Colby's best record in 20 years.

With the Lake Superior job, Borek has learned quickly that it's not like most of the rest. "I think it's kind of funny here that people focus so much on the coach and the name of the coach," Borek said. "And our guys really never did. That was something that obviously concerned me when the change happened. But we had a great preseason.

"And I spent the summer, obviously, making sure that wasn't an issue. And the guys have been very good about it. Certainly, coming here Kings 5, Maple Leafs 2 By helene St. James Free Press Sports Writer Not even the addition of an NHL player was enough for the Vipers on Tuesday night at the Palace. Center Bryan Smolinski, a contract holdout with the Pittsburgh Penguins, had 10 shots but no points in a 4-2 loss to the San Antonio Dragons.

Smolinski, who played at Michigan State, has 150 points in 217 NHL games. "I felt a little rusty out there," said Smolinski, who hadn't played since the World Cup with Team USA. Smolinski has asked the Penguins for a trade, and will play in the International Hockey League in the interim. Despite late goals by Todd Simon and Sergei Samsonov, the Vipers couldn't recover from a 4-0 hole. "That was a horror show," coach Steve Ludzik said.

LOUIS The Blues got the center Brett Hull has longed for Tuesday, acquiring Pierre Turgeon from Montreal in a five-player deal. The Canadiens got center-wing Shayne Corson, defenseman Murray I .1 Baron and a fifth-round Miji draft pick in 1997. The i i 'ues ot ense fc "iw man Rory Fitzpatrick and center Craig Conroy. "I'm sure Brett will be happy," Blues GM-coach Mike Keenanjsaid.

Paired with Adam Oates, Hull had a career-higji 86 goals in 1990-91. Oates was traded to Boston the next season in a contract squabble, and Hull has never been the same. Last season, Hull had 43 goals and 83 points. Turgeon led the Canadiens in scoring last season with 96 points, including 38 goals. In 1992-93, he had 58 goals and 132 points and won the Lady Byng Trophy for gentlemanly play.

This season, he had a goal and 10 assists in nine games. In 11 games, Corson has two goals and an assist, Baron two assists. Fitzpatrick has one assist in six games. Conroy is the leading scorer for Fredericton of the American Hockey League with 10 goals and six assists. Florida 1, NY Rangers 1: The visiting Panthers stayed unbeaten (7-0-4), getting within four games of the NHL unbeaten record to start a season set by the Edmonton Oilers (12-0-3) in 1984-85.

Florida got a second-period goat by Dave Lowry; the dangers' Wayne Gretzky scored with 4:40 left. Gretzky has at least a point in his last 12 games. John Vanbiesbrouck made 34 saves for the Panthers. "Johnny had another great game," Rangers coach Colin Campbell said. "He's got the Hart (Trophy for most valuable player) andVezina (Trophy for best goaltender) won already." Boston New Jersey 2: The host Bruins got their first home victory after five games, scoring three goals within 2:07 of the first period.

Adam Oates had a goal and two assists for Boston. The announced attendance was 13,783, but the Fleet-Center was about half-full. Chicago 2, Tampa Bay 2: Eric Weinrich scored his second goal of the game at 6:50 of the third period for the visiting Blackhawks. Dino Ciccarelli scored twice for the Lightning. Los Angeles 5, Toronto 2: Eddie Olczyk, Ray Ferraro and Yanic Perreault scored in the last 4: 18 for the visiting Kings.

Wings' power play shows life finally BY helene St. James Free Press Sports Writer Tonight's Red Wings-Canadiens game at Joe Louis Arena features the good and bad in power plays: Detroit's success rate is 6.1 percent, Montreal's 29.5. Brendan Shanahan revived the Wings' power play, which had been scoreless for eight games until Shanahan scored twice in last Wednesday's 4-1 victory against Dallas. Martin Lapointe scored the Wings' only other power-play goal Saturday at Boston. "We have had our chances, we just haven't had the chance to get rid of them," associate coach Barry Smith said.

"You change personnel around and sometimes with power plays, it's a rhythmic thing where everybody has a feel, moves the puck and senses where it's going to go, and the puck goes in for them. The biggest thing is to get chances. If you get a chance, it's going to happen." But to get a chance you first need a power play, and Smith isn't happy with how few penalties are being called. "I was watching a game last night, and with all the holding, the back-check hooking, it's difficult," Smith said. "You can't get free, you can't join the rush, you're not having any three-on-two's because they're hooking from the offensive zone.

"If the officiating doesn't change early in the season, it's sure not going to change late. It's not going to get any easier, because usually it starts the first part of the season and then towards the playoffs, it gets more lenient. And right now, you can't get much more lenient. And when you don't get a power play against it, therefore the guy's going to do more of it because he's not punished." Nick Lidstrom, a regular on the power play, said the acquisition of hard-shooting Shanahan has helped the situation. "With his shot, he can put the puck in the net for us," Lidstrom said.

"For the first five or six games we didn't have that many power plays, but still, we didn't execute on the chances we had. I think we're starting to play better and better on the power play. We're winning the games even though we're not scoring on the power play, but certainly, you want to have the power play going as well." The Wings' penalty killing is at 93 percent, Montreal's 73.9. Tonight marks the first time the teams have played since the 11-2 victory Dec. 2 that marked the end of Patrick Roy's reign in Montreal.

(He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche.) Mathieu Dandenault was particularly successful against the Canadiens last season: He had a goal Nov. 28 and three more Dec. 2. NOTEBOOK: Tim Taylor, out with a shoulder injury sustained in the Oct. 15 game at Dallas, skated by himself Tuesday.

"He's getting better," said trainer John Wharton, "though he needed help to get his jersey on and off." Defenseman Aaron Ward jammed his wrist during practice when he got caught between the boards and Darren McCarty, but Wharton said there was no serious damage done Nathan and Kyle Lepore, two adorable 5-year-olds, watched practice Tuesday. Afterward, Nathan, who has cerebral palsy, got an autographed jersey. The visit was set up by former Red Wing Dino Ciccarelli, now playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning. "I wanted to come in and work the hardest.

That was my main focus this year. I can't control anything that happens outside of me." Hunter suffered as a rookie. Thomas was in the twilight of his career, and his relationship with Hunter was strained, creating deep wounds. "It affected me more than I thought it would," Hunter said. "I was happy and excited that I was drafted that high, but it was difficult coming here behind Isiah.

I admired Isiah and Joe (Dumars) a lot. It was just the fact that I knew people were going to start looking at me saying, 'He's the next Hunter frequently made poor decisions with the basketball, and his confidence waned. He became uptight and played not to make mistakes. When Collins took over as coach last season, the two went through a roller-coaster ride while trying to figure out what to think of each other. Trade rumors surfaced.

"I even heard I was going to be cut all kinds of crazy Hunter said. This season, with Collins intending to keep the ball in Grant Hill's hands and having secondary baUhandlers in Dumars, Kenny Smith and Stacey Augmon, Hunter can do what he does best. "I'm very comfortable now with the way I'm being played," Hunter said. "The things that Doug has instructed me to do, more than anything else, have helped me to see that I can go out and just play. I don't have to look over my shoulder and worry.

"If I make a mistake, I realize noW that this is a game of mistakes. You just try not to make the same one twice. Now I can just go all-out. "It's so much of a mental game. I didn't even know up until now how mentally prepared you have to be.

I'm just now starting to understand that. "At one time, basketball was the only thing that was in my life. If I played terrible, I felt terrible." He laughed. "I'm married now and have kids," he noted. "I can walk away now if I go zero-for-10 or 10-for-10, and I'm happy because I know I played hard." Hunter also has learned that he couldn't take his frustrations home to his wife, Ivy, or sons Lindsey HI or Lindsey IV.

"I would come home frustrated, and my wife would pick up on it," Hunter said. "She told me that last year she could tell when I was into a game by looking at me and my facial expressions. She picked up on little things I didn't notice, and I realized she was right. "My boys didn't care if I had a bad day or not; they just knew I was home and they wanted to play. So I realized I couldn't bring that negative stuff home." For now, things are looking up at the Hunter household.
