DETROIT FREE PRESSSUNDAY, MAY 18, 1986 5E KURT CARLSON a few words with "A TERRIFIC FILM!" -Gene Siskel, At The Movies "MISS DEY, MR. HULCE sound Juilfjnicat AND MK. BVYYtN AKt winning performers: Vincent Ldnoy, (New rone limes ECHO PARK' IS A WINNER!" -William Wolf, Gannett News Service v. Carlson, who found himself only 10 minutes from death at one stage. "After beating me for an hour and a half, the terrorists dragged me to the deck of the airliner.

I was coughing up blood, and was numb from the waist up and having trouble breathing. Then Hitler said: '10 more He meant that if the plane wasn't refueled in 10 minutes I'd be killed." Fortunately, the refueling tanker arrived moments later. ON HIS HEALTH: Carlson says his health has been restored although his vision was affected slightly by his mistreatment. "It just meant I had to get a new pair of glasses," he said. For a while after his return home, however, he suffered from dysentery.

And he suffered from nightmares and sleepless nights. "That's when I started working on the book," he said. "I figured if I could get it out of me I could put it behind me." ON THE TERROR CRISIS: There are two keys to ending terrorism, according to Carlson. "First, you have to put real pressure on states that support terrorism: Syria, Libya and Iran. Then something has to be done about the Palestinian issue.

It's at the core of Mideast terrorism." He said that won't be easy: "It's been there for 100 years and shows no signs of solution." Bob McKelvey Free Press Book Editor A lew moments after TWA Flight 847 lifted off from Athens last June 14 on a flight to the United States, two agitated gunmen ran down the aisle screaming "Come to die! Americans die!" Thus began a 17-day ordeal of terror in which the fanatical hijackers killed Robert Stethem, a 24-year-old Navy diver, and assaulted several other passengers. Among the hostages was Kurt Carlson, an Army reservist and a roofing contractor from Rockford, III. He survived beatings, threats, bugs, rats, oppressive heat and illness, and, has written a chilling account of the hijacking, "One American Must Die" (Congdon Carlson was interviewed in Detroit while on tour promoting his book. ON HIS TORMENTORS: Carlson dubbed the two hijackers Hitler, because that one spoke a little German, and Crazy. "The one I called Crazy didn't speak at all," said Carlson.

"He just stood there with his eyes bouncing around like Ping-Pong balls. They kept going different ways." ON HIS FEARS: When he was on the plane, Carlson figured his chances of surviving were only three in 10. "That's because the hijackers always had the pins out of the hand grenades they carried and they were getting tired. ON FACING DEATH: '1 was concerned with survival constantly," said xm siiivi. Written by STEVE JEFF BUHAI Produced by JULIE CORMAffc Clted by ZANE BL onthe record with our critics pop: Nash has weak lyrics, lively tunes Innocent Eyes Graham Nash (Atlantic): This is the sound of techno-pop meeting protest-pop. Nash one-third of Crosby, Stills Nash, one of the socially conscious songwriting ensembles left from the '60s is still singing about the threat of nuclear weapons, the injustice of the Berlin Wall and the Nash inadequacy of modern politics, but not with the fervor he had in the days of "Chicago" and "Pre-Road Downs." This self-purported enlightened artist even refers to a woman as a "dame" in "See You in Prague," and his tour-blues number, "Glass and Steel" where the self-proclaimed family man sings about propositioning girls doesn't evoke much sympathy. Lyrical weaknesses aside, "Innocent Eyes" is at least a tuneful record and one of Nash's most consistent solo efforts.

Songs like the title track, "Prague" and "Don't Listen to Rumours" all composed by other songwriters are potential pop hits, while Nash writes some interesting and almost authentic-sounding reggae, on "Keep Away from Me," "I Got a Rock" and "Newday." No revelations from ol' Graham this time out just some toe tapping. Gary Graff briefly noted; Belinda Belinda Carlisle (I.R.S.): This Go-Go goes solo with a promising, eclectic album that almosl matches her ex-qroup's work. Inside Out Philip Bailey (Columbia): A satisfying follow-up to last year's top-selling "Chinese Wall." Live! For Life Various Artists (I.R.S.) Good music for a good cause. Concert tracks by Sting, the Bangles, Squeeze, the Alarm, R.E.M. and others, with the money going to the AMC Cancer Research Center.

Home! Abroad: The Style Council Live (Geffen): A well-recorded and well-per- formed concert album that doubles as a fine best-of collection. country: Dolly's flair is missing this time Think About Love Dolly Parton (RCA): When a Dolly Parton album has only eight songs and some of those are throwaways, you get the feeling Par-ton's mind is on some other enterprise, like an amusement park. That's just what happens here. The catchy jingle of "Think About Love" slides right into a coarsely repetitious jangle on "It's Such a Heartache," right in line with the most grating of her previous pop-oriented material. "Tie Our Love (in a Double Knot)" is a little more pleasant.

The flip side offers more chance for emotion to come through, although it seems a bit forced on "We Had It All." "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind," the only Parton original, won't go down as one of her best but has a hint of her feeling and flair. Parton can't do a song without putting a little bit of heart into it, but that becomes a disadvantage when she tackles the Motown oldie "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)." Any heart at all is simply too heavy for the sentiment. Jean Calmen briefly noted; Seasons Oak Ridge Boys (MCA): A generally pleasant collection of songs with some arrangements seeming closer to the style of Alabama makes clear one big advantage the Oaks have over many other groups bass singer Richard Sterban. top hitsLaBelle U'tmil Onion!
