DETROIT FREE PRESSTUESDAY, APRIL 28, 1987 3C SMU transfer corners job at Michigan State "The next day, there were a lot of coaches in the office, maybe 50, 55 of them. They were looking at film and talking to us. When you'd get done with one, there was another one waiting." Reed considered five schools and made two visits: to Southern Cal and Michigan State. "I was going to visit Clemson, Georgia and North Carolina," he said, "but once I got here, I enjoyed the coaches and the people up here were great. It's a nice campus and I feel at home." REED ALSO was right at home in spring practice.

"I think, now, I'm learning technique," he said. "I'm getting my chance to run with the first string. I have a good chance to start." Perles confirmed that, saying that if the Spartans opened the season this week, Reed would be a starting corner-back. MSU closes spring practice Saturday with its annual intrasquad game By JACK SAYLOR Free Prett Sporli Writer EAST LANSING Perhaps none of the 100 or so football players at Michigan State will play a larger role next season than a transfer who arrived March 31 for the spring quarter. It was so simple: Derrick Reed switched a letter, from SMU to MSU, and In three weeks of spring practice has proved to be a valuable asset in the defensive backfield.

A two-year starter at left corner-back at Southern Methodist, Reed already Is projected as a probable starter at the same position at MSU. He gives the Spartans added speed and the ability to make some important assignment changes In the secondary. "We were surprised by the news of the 'death penalty' at Southern Methodist," said MSU coach George Perles, recalling the NCAA's decision in February to scuttle the Mustangs' program (1:30 p.m.) at Spartan Stadium. Reed, 5-feet-l 1, 188 pounds, participated In 918 plays for SMU last year. "He gives us the speed we need on the corner and he's also smart, which is really important at the corner position," Perles said.

Competing at the 'opposite corner are redshirt freshman Lenier Payton of Highland Park and Craig Johnson, Who has tired of being Lorenzo White's backup at tailback. Either way, it's a faster "set of corners than last year. Perles is moving the former corners, John Miller and Todd Krumm, to safety improving the speed at those spots. Also, Fred Parker is competing with Reed at cornerback and returnee Maurice Chamberlain is in the safety picture. "We've stockpiled and have some depth now we've gotten a lot faster on defense," Perles said.

"We could be a pretty good defensive team." rsO MSU defensive co-ordinator Nick Saban (left) discusses a play with cornerback Derrick Reed at practice Monday. REGGIE ROGERS would fill a crucial need for the Lions, who had little success rushing the passer last year. And Brown would be almost as valuable in beefing up the Lions' rushing defense and providing an inside pass rush. The Lions do not have as crucial a need for defensive backs but probably could not pass up Woodson, rated as perhaps the best athlete in the draft. If those three players are gone, Darryl Rogers Indicated he would be more willing to consider trading down In the first round than he has been in Three-run TIGERS, from Page 1D second out. Then Darnell Coles' slump grew to 2-for-49 as he grounded to Presley for a force at third.

Tanana (six hits allowed) had made his fourth quality start in as many outings, but his record stayed at 2-1. The Tigers tried to win it for him, 1-0, with defense. "We weren't sure we wanted anybody, but we didn't want to sit around and second-guess ourselves later just for the want of a plane ticket." PERLES QUICKLY dispatched his co-ordlnators, Nick Saban (defense) and Morris Watts (offense), to Dallas. They were caught up in the cattle stampede of recruiters at SMU, swooping in to pick over the bones of the Mustangs' football carcass. "We found out Reed had played more minutes than any other player for SMU, he had two more years of eligibility and was on the Southwest Conference all-academic team," Perles said. "We had him in for a visit." Reed, from Dallas, was likewise stunned by the NCAA decision. "Nobody expected it," he said.

"We figured it would be probation We were all shocked. Green Bay a quarterback (Steve Young) and a first-round draft choice for the Packers No. 4 spot in the first round. "There's a 50-50 chance we'll trade one or both first-round picks Tuesday Walsh said. "We have offered both to get as high as the second spot.

You have to get in the first four or five to get one of the Impact players. "There are good ones after that but the franchise players will be gone by then." The draft is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., with each team allotted 15 min utes to make its first-round pick or work out a trade. All 12 rounds of the draft will be completed today. The Lions have 10 draft choices. They traded their sec ond-round pick to Houston for guard Harvey Salem and their fifth-round pick to Seattle for linebacker Shelton Robinson.

THAT LEFT runners at second and third with two out. Right-handed hitting Christensen was coming up, with right-handed cleanup batter Presley on deck. Manager Sparky Anderson visited the mound, after which Tanana issued his first walk of the game, to Christensen on four pitches. None was close. But it's hard to believe the left-handed Tanana was pitching around Christensen (Just called up from the minors) to pitch to Presley (107 RBIs last season).

Presley shot a 1-1 pitch on a low line toward center. The Tigers tried to play defense one more time as shortstop Trammell dived for the ball. But he missed it by a foot or two. Neither team got its first hit until the fifth. The Tigers' came from Lemon, leading off.

He eventually scored on a single by catcher Orlando Mercado, who caught Langston here in '84 before being traded to Texas prior to the '85 season. IN TAKING the 1-0 lead, the Tigers were helped by Evans' first sacrifice bunt In two years. Langston and Tanana each had a no-hit pool activated until Lemon led off the fifth with a single off the base of the shallow wall in left. Bottled in Scotland. the weeks preceding the draft. "At that point, you start checking around," he said. "You go someplace else." On the, eve of the draft, there seemed to be more uncertainties than there have been in recent drafts. The injury of Indianapolis Colts fullback Randy McMillan in a car accident Sunday added to the confusion.

McMillan suffered two broken bones In his left leg and will miss the upcoming season, said Colts general manager Jim Irsay. McMillan is in stable condition. Because of McMillan's injury, Irsay said the Colts would consider drafting Highsmlth. "The way (coach) Ron (Meyer) wants to run our one-back offense makes Alonzo really attractive to us," Irsay said. "And what happened to Randy will certainly be a factor in our decision-making.

"Our decision Is whether Bennett Is too much better to pass up or are they close enough that with a dire need, could we go the other way?" A NUMBER of trade rumors surfaced during the final day of draft preparations. There was a rumor that Houston would trade up to get Buffalo's No. 3 pick; a rumor that Pittsburgh would trade up to get St. Louis' No. 6 if Woodson were available; a rumor that San Francisco coach Bill Walsh wants Fullwood so badly he would offer eighth beats tial tying run at the plate to end the fifth.

Bob Kearney led off the sixth with a drive to deep center that Chet Lemon ran down with a leaping grab against the wall. But Harold Reynolds, the next hitter, doubled inside third. Donell Nixon ripped a single to left, Reynolds stopping at third. Bradley hit a tapper in front of the mound. Reynolds held third.

Tanana appeared to have a chance to force become the third catcher and a late-inning defensive replacement. Anderson feels he can improve the team offensively by making Nokes the catcher against righties and by replacing Lowry on the roster with Bean a move the Tigers made Friday. Anderson said the left-handed hitting Bean will "start all games against right-handed pitching right now, until he proves different." For Bean's first few starts, he played left, Lemon played center and Pat Sheridan played right Darrell Evans was at DH, Dave Bergman at first and Grubb didn't play because of a groin injury. But when Gibson returns, first at DH and then right field, the Bean-against-all-righties plan will force someone to the bench. It won't be Sheridan.

"Pat Sheridan will not sit down," Anderson said. Sheridan steals bases, but Lemon doesn't. So when Gibson does get back to right, will Bean be in left, Sheridan In center and Lemon on the bench? "I'm not going to get to that yet," Anderson said. I NFL DRAFT, from Page 1D It's not a bad situation for the Lions. "I'm at ease with it," Darryl Rogers said.

PRIVATELY, HOWEVER, the Lions would have to admit it would be somewhat disappointing to miss a shot at Reggie Rogers, Brown and Woodson, who are rated right behind Alabama linebacker Cornelius Bennett as the best defensive players in the draft. Bennett is expected to go to Indianapolis, drafting second behind Tampa Bay, which already has signed No. 1 choice quarterback Vinny Testaverde from Miami Although there had been speculation over the weekend that Reggie Rogers might somehow slide through the first six picks, it seems doubtful now that he will be available when the Lions draft. "I think the running backs are going to be the guys who slide," Darryl Rogers said. There were indications Monday that the Buffalo Bills or Houston Oilers (through a trade with Buffalo) would draft Reggie Rogers.

The Bills have the third pick. At least two teams drafting ahead of -the Lions San Diego (No. 5) and St. Louis (No. 6) ha ve listed Woodson as one of their top choices.

And sources in St. Louis said the Cardinals might draft Brown if Woodson already is gone. Reggie Rogers appears to be the key player in a possible chain reaction. PfTTStUDOrl CORNIM LDSS COMPARE OUR PRICES Will rookies oust Lemon? 1 1 1 By JOHN LOWE Free Press Sports Writer SEATTLE In baseball, plans are made to be broken. When the Tigers went to spring training, their replacements for Lance Parrish at catcher were supposed to be Dwlght Lowry against right-handed pitching and Mike Heath against lefthanders. Yet as of Monday night, Lowry was in the minors and Heath had not caught an Inning. This is the Matt Nokes factor. Next week, the Billy Bean factor will hit the lineup card full force, and either John Grubb or Chet Lemon will be benched against right-handers.

THE LOWRY-HEATH plan is still half alive. Heath has been playing right field against left-handers with Kirk Gibson out. When Gibson returns he's scheduled to do so a week from tonight manager Sparky Anderson said Heath will do most of the catching against left-handers. That means Orlando Mercado, who has been catching against lefties, will Z2.Z& WEST BSD CLASS BLCSK REPLACEMENT WINDOWS SAFE SECURE FREE ESTIMATES FINANCING Fitness Workouts Pay Off Whether you want to lose weight, trim off Inches, or achieve cardiovascular fitness, we'll design the personalized program that is perfect for you.
