The July 31 trading deadline is a week from today, and Cecil Fielder is well aware of it. "Of course it's on my mind," Fielder said. "It's probably on more peoples' mind here than mine. I'm not going to let it disturb me or my performance.

We'll wait and see what happens." It will be a surprise if the Tigers deal Fielder by next Wednesday, the deadline for making a deal without having waivers on a player. The reason is Fielder's salary. But general manager Randy Smith might have until Aug. 31 the deadline for setting postseason rosters to trade him, because Fielder's salary also likely will allow him to get through waivers. A lot of teams could probably use a slugger like Fielder, but he has approximately $10 million remaining on his contract through next season.

And if the Tigers pay upwards of $2 million or $3 million of that while Fielder plays elsewhere, they will want at least one young player in return. Smith has begun making calls to contending trying to generate interest in some veteran Tigers. "There's nothing really going at this point," Smith said Wednesday. "There are no continuing conversations." Although the Indians swapped designated hitter Eddie Murray to Baltimore on Sunday for pitcher Kent Mercker, the deal apparently didn't create an opening that Fielder can fill. Murray had become expendable' because newcomer Mark Carreon and Jeromy Burnitz will inherit Murray's at-bats.

Fielder's chances of going to Cleveland might increase if slugger Albert Belle departs as a free agent! after this season. There are growing indications that; the Tribe won't keep Belle because of his continuing attitude and discipline problems. LEWS INTEREST? The Tigers might have interest in infielder Scott Leius, whom Cleveland apparently will let go to make room for pitcher Dennis Martinez's return from the disabled list. Leius can play all four infield positions, which would give him two potential appeals for next season's Tigers. He could be a candidate to play 'shortstop, a position that is open.

If Alan Trammell doesn't return, he could replace him as a utility infielder. Leius, who homered to win Game 2 of the 1991 World Series for Minnesota, had the best of his six big-league seasons with the '94 Twins, when he had 14 homers and 49 RBIs in 350 at-bats. NOTES: Tuesday night, in Justin Thompson's second rehabilitation start for Visalia against High Desert, he struck out seven and allowed two hits in three scoreless innings. Thompson is still on target for a return of Aug. 2 or 3.

Before Thursday night's series opener in Seattle, the Tigers plan to activate Trammell and pitcher Greg Gohr, and to send infielder Fausto Cruz and pitcher Jeff McCurry to the minors to make room. Gohr doesn't sound upset about being sent from the rotation to the bullpen. "I just want to pitch," said Gohr, who has missed three weeks with tendinitis in his left knee.
