6E DETROIT FREE PRESSSUNDAY, APR. 6, 1986 Lyrics reflect explosion of nuclear concern Why interest is growing in WGPR mattpr if we turn to dustTurn and turn "I'm 36 years old and having some thoughts everybody in the world should be having. During the past couple years I've started to think about the nuclear threat and what's going on around us, and it can't help but creep into your writing." Rick Springfield A 2 I 4 i If m.r 1 and turn we mustI know I'll see you dancing in the ruins tonight" but former Black Sabbath singer Ozzy. Osbourne is making definite statements on his new album, "The Ultimate Sin." "Thank God for the Bomb" is sarcasm without subtlety, for instance, and on "Killer of Giants," Osbourne sings: none of us believe in war then can you fell me what the weapon's for? Listen to me everyone If the button is pushed there'll be nowhere to run. "It's a frightening thought," Osbourne said.

"There's so many of these weapons around it's frightening. Reagan and Gorbachev have agreed to drop their arsenals from 600 of one bomb to 400; that's going to make us sleep a lot better, I'm sure. You only need one in London and that wipes us out. "In our personal lives, so many of us try to push it under the carpet and hope it goes away. But let's face it one day, one of these things are going to go wrong and we could all well die.

Maybe it's time to pull the carpet up and take a look at it after all." MUSIC, from Page 1E band named Nena made an impact on America with "99 Luftballoons," a chilling song about a world-ending nuclear war triggered by a batch of balloons that floated into an unspecified country's radar range. "It just means that if somebody steps on your toe, you don't have to kill him," explained Nena's Carlo Karges. "The song isn't meant to be political. It's just something we feel close to, particularly with the United States putting its missiles around in Europe in our backyards, really." THE TREND TOWARD singing about nuclear war and the end of the world has intensified during the past year. Tears for Fears hit the top of the charts last spring with "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," and they've been followed by Sting the Rolling Stones to Rick Springfield This World Away," "Walking on the Mike the Mechanics Running," "Hanging by a Thread," "A Call to Osbourne God for the Bomb," "Killer of Asia and Blue Oyster Cult in the "I'm 36 years old and.

having some thoughts everybody in the world should be having," Springfield said. "During the past couple years I've started to think about the nuclear threat and what's going on around us, Sting told Record magazine. "My feeling is you have to make contact with our potential enemies, people you might expect to kill or be killed by." In Musician magazine, he explained: "That line is self-evident, isn't it. Of course the Russians love their children, too! But I don't think we're meant to believe that. If we're to consider them our enemies, it would be easier if we thought of them as being unfeeling, robotic insects." HEAVY METAL, a genre not generally credited with producing thoughtful lyrics, has produced the latest entries about nuclear war.

Like Prince, Blue Oyster Cult may seem flippant in "Dancing in the Ruins" "It doesn't and it can't help but creep into your writing." Explained Genesis' Mike Rutherford, who leads Mike the Mechanics in his spare time: "I think our generation is a lot more aware of the problem. The children who are appearing now are becoming concerned about it, about the world ending during their lifetime. "Our parents' generation was close-minded in certain ways in which they led us. The bomb was presented to us as our defense against the communist threat." That mentality is what Sting attacked in "Russians." Using the usual gaggle of cold-war rhetoric voiced by Russia and America, the former leader of the Police sets up the song's chilling thesis "I hope the Russians love their children, too" which he views as the only hope of averting a nuclear war. "It's a very obvious statement to me, but one that isn't being made," COME HELPTHE CARE BEARS SAVETHE KINGDOM OF CARING, WGPR, from Page 1E the station is doing now in terms of profit is irrelevant to what it would be worth to sell," says Peter Appert, a New York-based media analyst with C.J.

Lawrence Co. "You pay a price on what your expected cash flow is going to be, not on What it is. For such a property, someone could be paying $20 million or $30 million." According to financial records obtained by the Free Press, WGPR-TV and WGPR-FM made $375,522.81 profit in fiscal 1 983 on gross revenue of $3.05 million, a profit margin of approximately 12.3 percent. In fiscal 1984, the latest year records were available, the television and radio properties made $962,233.02 profit on gross revenue of $3.09 million, giving them a profit margin of about 31 percent. That is considerably above the National Association of Broadcasters' average of an 18.8 percent profit margin for a UHF station in a Top 10 market.

However, the association reports that the average UHF station generates $2.7 million profit on $14.5 million gross revenue. Indeed, according to a confidential financial analysis commissioned last year by a communications company that decided not to bid for WGPR, the TV station alone could generate a 36 percent profit margin on $18.6 million gross revenue within five years. FOUNDED 10 years ago by the late Rev. William Banks and owned by the International Free Accepted Modern Masons Channel 62 has offered a heavy dose of televised religion, spiced with some public service, entertainment, sports and information programming. While other commercial stations concentrate on selling a few minutes every hour to support their programming, WGPR-TV sells large portions of airtime to various religious organizations.

Although there may be an audience for such fare, it is not the stuff of commercial success. Says Detroit broadcasting veteran Don Haney: "When you consider the competition in the marketplace I'd say Channel 62 is a success. (But) their philosophy (of religious programming) CLASSIC "We have taken all inquiries to the board, and they have been uninterested in selling," said Tenicia Gregory, WGPR vice-president and general manager. will have to be changed somewhat it they want to increase their competitiveness." Buzz Luttrell, a former WXYZ-TV reporter who worked briefly at WGPR and is now a talk show host in Boston, said the station "falls far short of what it could be doing. "The idea was they could be a black entry onto the airwaves," Luttrell said last week.

"But Channel 62 has fallen far short of what the black community hoped for in Detroit. I hope something happens to get them off dead center. There won't be any change, however, until the black community approaches management and says, 'We want change and we are willing to support RECENT TELEVISION ratings surveys indicate that WGPR-TV faces a Herculean challenge if it aspires to become a Detroit television contender. According to recent Arbitron ratings surveys, Channel 62 captured only a one percent share. During sweeps in 1985 and 1984, WGPR-TV was rated too low to measure.

"Looking at these (Arbitron) numbers," said media analyst Appert, "I'd say this must be a station that is not attempting to get a meaningful audience share. "This is probably an underutilized facility. If you were trying to run it as a commercial property, you could be doing a whole lot more with it than you are doing now. So if this group (the Masons) wanted to sell it, it would represent a valuable commodity to someone wanting to buy." A NEW GENERATION. ITS A WHO NEW ADVENTURE.
