Hill listed day-to-day with injured wrist BY PERRY A. FARRELL AND DREW SHARP Free Press Sports Writers All-star forward Grant Hill suffered a soft-tissue injury in his right wrist, courtesy of Dream Team III teammate Karl Malone, in Monday's 106-97 loss to Utah in Salt Lake City. Hill was examined by Dr. Ed Burke at Harper Grace Hospital, where he spent most of Tuesday. Listed as day-to-day, Hill is expected to do some light running at practice today before a decision is made on whether he can play in Thursday's home game against Indiana.

He was knocked off balance by Malone while trying to run through a screen the Jazz power forward set for John Stockton with six minutes left. Hill eventually returned and finished with a team-high 34 points. "I was with him all day," said Pistons coach Doug Collins. "Grant was at the hospital all day getting rays and everything just to rule out anything serious, and right now it looks like it's just a soft-tissue injury. He's in a splint.

We want to rest it until Thursday morning, and then the doctor will look at him again. "There was a lot of concern. We were worried that his wrist might be broken, so it was good news. He's real sore. He just has to get the soreness out." Hill has started all 41 games and leads the team in scoring (21.4), rebounding (9.0), minutes played assists (262) and steals (55).

With Joe Dumars also ailing he sat out Monday's game after being kicked in the knee Saturday at Houston the Pistons would be hard-pressed to keep up with the Pacers if Hill can't play. ROE CALL The Pistons' injury situation and general fatigue was the reason Collins gave little-used rookie Lou Roe significant playing time against Utah. Roe scored 11 points in 24 minutes, making him one of the few bright spots in the game. But whether the performance marks the beginning of increased minutes is up to Roe. "Lou knows that there is a position for him on this team but has yet to consistently show me on a day-today basis that he wants it," Collins said.

"We're not just giving minutes away. They've got to be earned. Sure, he had his moments, but let's see if he wants to keep working hard. That remains to be seen." REGROUPING: Collins had the Pistons do some running and stretching to get back on eastern time after the four-game western trip. "It has been my experience that if you don't do something today, tomorrow is a lost day," he said.

The Pistons begin the second half of the season over .500 for the first time since 1991-92, when they were 23-18. Meanwhile, Kirk Muller arrived at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday dressed in Toronto blue. The Wings were once in the hunt for Muller, a player who could have filled the above description. Asked before Tuesday's game how much interest he received from the Wings, Muller said, "Lots.

I heard a lot. I can't deny that was one place I heard a lot of rumors about. But there were seven or eight places." The Leafs acquired Muller on Jan. 23 in a three-way deal with the Islanders and Senators. Muller was too costly for the budget-conscious Wings.

He will make $1.9 million Canadian this season, $4.3 million in the final two years of his contract. And the Islanders wanted a piece of the Wings' prized future. Through it all, the Wings were never sold on Muller, having scouted him early in the season before he was told to leave the Islanders and wait for a deal. "I got to the point where I said I'm just going to wait for it to finally happen," Muller said. "There's too much of a roller coaster every day hearing that it could be here or there.

I just let it be and waited for the word. "The biggest thing was, relief is a good word, the fact that I just wanted to get back playing hockey. That was No. 1. Secondly, I was really excited that it was Toronto.

The whole situation was real positive." Perhaps not for the Wings. They'll face Muller and the Leafs four more times in the final 34 games. And there's always the possibility of a playoff series. But there's plenty of time for the Wings to find a left wing before the March 20 trade deadline. The Wings also are interested in acquiring a tough defenseman.

But they denied rumors of a deal that would bring defenseman Lyle Odelein from Montreal for defense-man Marc Bergevin and center Kris Draper. The rumor apparently started when Bergevin's name came up during a French-Canadian broadcast. GROUSING ON THE FARM: Adirondack center Wes Walz, angry that he hasn't been recalled by the Wings, has asked for a trade. Walz went public with complaints the Wings broke a promise to recall him. "When I signed with the Detroit Red Wings in the summer, it wasn't to play with the Adirondack Red Wings," he said after being named MVP of the AHL All-Star Game in Hershey, Pa.

"I'm disappointed with how things turned out with Detroit. They made some promises to me about NHL playing time. I kept my end of the bargain. I thought I had a fantastic training camp, I was a good soldier in Adirondack, but they haven't kept promises." Apparently, Walz was told after training camp he would be recalled within a few weeks. That hasn't happened because the Wings have been relatively free of injuries goalie Kevin Hodson and defenseman Jamie Pushor have been the only recalls and in their one trade acquired another center, Igor Larionov, from San Jose.

"I think it was insinuated to him, 'Go down and don't worry, you're going to be back in said Wings assistant general manager Ken Holland, who is also the GM for Adirondack. "He's not very happy down there. I spend half my days talking to hockey people about Wes Walz, and I'm getting tired of it. I can't even drum up a minor-league deal. I've asked for a minor-league player in return and I can't make a deal.

The interest isn't out there that he seems to think is out there." With Mike Vernon backing up Chris Osgood on Tuesday, the Wings sent Hodson to Adirondack. 8-20 3-6 2-4 2-8 1-9 0-1 24 3-7 240 34-94 21-25 18-50 17 26 Totals FG: 362. FT: .840. 3PG: 10-28, .357 (Fox 4-8. Day 3-10.

With goalie Dominik Hasek pulled for a sixth attacker, LaFontaine found a loose puck in the lower right circle and backhanded a shot that tucked under the crossbar. Fichaud stopped 22 shots to become the fifth Islanders goaltender to win his debut. Kelly Hrudey, Jamie McLennan, Rollie Melanson and Richard Brodeur were the others. Derek King had given the Islanders a 4-3 lead at 13:24, backhanding a giveaway from rookie Mike Wilson past Hasek, who made 30 saves.

Alexander Semak, Niklas Anders-son and Travis Green also scored for the Islanders, who gained their first points in their last six games (1-5). Wilson and Gary Galley also scored for the Sabres, who have only one win in their last eight games (1-7). Wings drop Maple Leafs in revival, 4-2 RED WINGS, from Page ID "It's still hurting, the upper back, upper body," said Fedocov. "I'm not the toughest player in the league. I know what my job is.

"It's not my job being a tough player, being one of the players who score. Just to play hard, that's all I know. I came back and I was successful." By the time Fedorov returned, the Leafs had taken a 2-1 lead on defense-man Todd Gill's shot from the top of the left circle at 5:57 of the third. Fedorov returned and took over. He controlled the puck in the neutral zone and broke for the Leafs' zone down the right side.

Fedorov went wide on defenseman Larry Murphy, cut to the net, sent. the puck under Murphy's stick, then grabbed it back for a snap shot that beat goalie Don Beaupre to the far side just inside the left post at 7:45. Following the ensuing face-off, Fedorov took the puck into the Leafs' zone on the right side and sent a pass that got by defenseman Dave Ellett and went right to Larionov in the slot. Larionov lifted a shot over Beaupre's glove at 8:01. The Leafs spent most of the first period trying to fend off the Wings' attack.

But Toronto came around in the second, putting more pressure on the Wings and tying it at 1 at 6:17. The goal came when Yushkevich took a shot from above the right circle that Osgood stopped. The puck bounced in the crease and Doug Gil-' mour was there to bury the rebound into the open net before Osgood could react. Osgood, who faced six shots in the first, made 11 saves in the second to keep it tied. Among his better stops: a glove save on Mats Sundin as he was bearing down in the slot about 8:30 into the period.

Beaupre stopped all 11 shots in the second. The Wings outplayed the Leafs in the first period but thanks to Beaupre, they led only 1-0. Slava Kozlov scored the goal for the Wings, who outshot the Leafs, 15-6. Greg Johnson set up Kozlov at 7:16, controlling a puck that bounced off the left boards into the circle. Johnson sent it across to Kozlov for the one-timer off the right post.

Beaupre didn't have a chance on that one, but he stopped everything else. His best stop came when he stopped an Yzerman breakaway three minutes into the game with a glove save. Doug Brown had two glorious chances but failed to connect. Brown was in front for a rebound of Kozlov's shot with 8:30 left in the first period. He also shot wide with a backhander while alone in front with about five minutes left.

The Wings had to kill a five-minute penalty to Fedorov when he sent Jons-son into the boards shoulder-first with 2:51 remaining in the first period. Jonsson had to be helped off the ice. He suffered a separated shoulder and didn't return. Fedorov received a five-minute major, but did not get a game misconduct and ejection because he hit Jonsson on the shoulder, not the head or neck. Still, the Wings were without two of their best penalty killers for the duration: Fedorov and Bob Errey.

Errey played early in the first but suffered a bruised chest and didn't return. 2, Johnson 2, Person, Kleine). nagram tout: (Barklev).
