After attending William and Mary, Creekmur joined the Lions in 1950 and played nine seasons. He played left guard his first two seasons then switched to left tackle. He currently lives in Plantation, Fla. Creekmur was All-Pro in six seasons and started in the first eight Pro Bowls. He was selected for the Pro Bowl in his ninth season, but missed the game because of a conflict with his off-season job in the Detroit trucking industry.

Dierdorf played tackle and center for 13 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals after an All-America career at Michigan. He now works as a broadcaster for ABC. The new Hall of Famers will be introduced formally at the Pro Bowl in Honolulu next Sunday. They will be enshrined in Canton next July.

Detroit News wire services contributed. "Whew," said Creekmur, 69, when informed of his long-delayed selection. Tve been sitting on pins and needles." He became the fifth Lion from the "50s to be selected to the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio: Layne (elected in 1967), Joe Schmidt (1973), Yale Lary (1979) and Frank Gatski (1985). Gatski spent most of his career with the Cleveland Browns before playing for the Lions in 1957. Lem Barney (1992) was the most recent former Lion to be enshrined in the Hall.

"We were a lot of rabble-rousers," Creekmur said of the Layne-era champions. "We lived high on the hog, but on Sunday we were dedicated." The Lions won NFL championships in 1952 and 1953, and in 1957, when Tbbin Rote won the title game in place of Layne, who was out with a broken leg. The '54 Lions lost to the Browns in the NFL championship game. "I missed one block in my entire career, when I was a rookie, and I Creekmur nals; Joe Gibbs, who coached the Redskins to three Super Bowls; Charlie Joiner, one of the game's top receivers with the Bengals, Oilers and Chargers; and Mel Renfro, a cornerback with the Cowboys. Creekmur was a major protector for Bobby Layne when the Lions dominated the NFL.
