23 DETROIT FREE PRESSMONDAY, JANUARY 15, 1996 New riverboat increases casino revenues Sanford, Meridian parents to see kids' assignments on computers Gingrich visit protest planned ETROIT A coalition of community leaders is 1 1 planning a jj demonstration Tuesday to protest the visit of Associated Press SANFORD Parent-teacher conferences are going hh-tech in Meridian and Sanford schools, where parents will be able to review assignments in computer-driven collections that will include sound and pictures. "We'll have a computer set up, probably in the hall, and parents can access work," said Ken Gellerman, who handles the computer lab at the elementary schools. The collections by fifth- and sixth-graders will begin with the student's video introduction. Gellerman used a $250 grant to buy a video camera that transfers recordings onto a computer. He was one of 17 grant-winners this year from a program stressing innovative instruction in Midland County schools.

The Gerstacker Foundation has provided $10,000 annually since 1990 for teacher mini-grants. Gellerman said he tries to incorporate computer skills into students' learning. In the spring, all assignments will be included in a computer-driven review of each student's class work. BY TINA LAM Free Press Staff Writer Canada's New Orleans-style river-boat casino provided a healthy boost for Casino Windsor Limited's operations in December a $4-million increase compared with last December, despite being open just 19 days. Except for the week between Christmas and New Year's, December tends to be a slow month, said casino spokesman Jim Mundy.

"It'll build by July." Mundy said casino officials were pleased with the initial performance of the Northern Belle, which has 828 slot machines and 38 table games. The riverboat has spread out crowds, he said. "We had no lineups at Casino Windsor except on New Year's visitor numbers at the Northern Belle likely will drop while the amount each leaves behind likely will rise in coming months. For example, when Casino Windsor opened in May 1994 at a converted art gallery overlooking the Detroit River, an average of 19,000 people streamed through daily during its first weeks. They left behind less than $40 apiece.

By September, daily attendance had dropped to 16,500 but each gambler was leaving $64 at the casino. Both casinos are owned by the province of Ontario and operated by a consortium of three U.S. casino companies Circus Circus Enterprises Caesars World Inc. and Hilton Hotels Corp. Eve," Mundy said.

"That was the goal." There are few lines to get onto the riverboat, and when there are lines, they're short, he said. In December 1995, the casino on land and the riverboat casino raked in $34 million from an average of 20,163 gamblers daily. A year ago, Casino Windsor drew $30.2 million from an average 14,666 daily gamblers. The top-grossing U.S. riverboat is the year-old Grand Victoria in Elgin, which raked in $17.8 million in November, according to Riverboat Gaming Report.

New casinos tend to follow a pattern: For the first few weeks, visitors look rather than spend. Given that, Death Notices Today's Alphabetical Listing HELPFUL HINT U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who they say was instrumental in a series of government cuts that hurt people everywhere. Gingrich, is to appear before the Detroit Economic Club at the Burton Manor in Livonia. Organizers of the protest include the Detroit branch of the NAACP; Fannie Lou Hamer Political Action Committee; the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employes; local Democratic Party organizations and New Detroit Inc.

"Newt Gingrich is turning the dream of Dr. Martin L. King Jr. into a nightmare," the Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of the NAACP branch, said in a press release.

"The government shutdown, cuts to children and the elderly are causing tremendous family breakdowns inside our community." Anthony could not be reached for comment.
