B.G. lowed by Cremation, BY TINA LAM Free Yess Staff Writer Helen B. Schwarz had an unusual set of tales to tell her children and grandchildren war stories. The oldest known surviving World War I Army nurse in Michigan, she also served in World War II at an Army hospital in Battle Creek caring for amputees. Mrs.

Schwarz died Thursday at home in Battle Creek after a short illness. She was 97. Mrs. Schwarz lived the last 12 years of her life with her son, state Sen. John Schwarz, R-Battle Creek.

When the United States joined World War she was scheduled to leave on a ship for war duty in France. But the Army didn't want the Germans to know when it was moving troops, so she was required to leave her quarters in New York in civilian clothes and make her way quietly to New Jersey to set sail for France. She served from 1917 until early 1919 in France, where she met her future husband, Major Frank Schwarz, an Army physician with the 82nd Division. They married in 1919. Born in 1895 in Chicago as Helen Brennan, she was the daughter of Irish immigrants.

She graduated from high school in Chicago and from the Philadelphia Genera Hospital School of Nursing. When war broke out, she volunteered for the Army Nurse Corps. 5 She and her husband lived in Arizo-nIdaho, California, Texas, Maryland ami Pennsylvania after the war, while hesas working for the U.S. Public Health Service and the Veterans Administration. The couple moved to Battle Creek in 1935.

During World War Mrs. Schwarz went back to nursing, working the oviernight shift at Percy Jones General Htepital, the Army's largest wartime hospital and a center for amputees, John Schwarz said. She also worked at thebase hospital at Ft. Custer in Battle Creek. "I remember the house was always filled at the holidays with doctors and nurses who were away from Korfle," John Schwarz said.

jShe was a member of St. Philip Church, the church's Women's Service Organization, the Women's Overseas Service League, the Calhoun County Medical Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the Leila Hospital Auxiliary in Battle Creek. Jb her early 70s, she was upset wHen the Peace Corps turned her dtavn, even though she passed the admission test, John Schwarz said. he traveled all over the world, evenCin her mid-80s, he said. "I have pictures of her on a camel in Egypt and bargaining with a Pakistani carpet merchant," he said.

She loved attending University of Michigan football games, and attended her last one on her 80th birthday. Her husband died in 1957. She's also survived by a son, Frank; daughter, Janet Miller; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Juneral services and burial will take today at 2 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Battle Creek.

i MARGARET MOYES SOELLNER, 81, of Red-ford Township, a former homemaker, will be remembered at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Northbrook Presbyterian Church, 22055 W. Fourteen Mile Road, Birmingham. The former Margaret Lawton died Monday at Harper-Grace Hospital in Detroit of complications from a stroke. She also suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

Mrs. Soeflner was active at the Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church in Ferndale and the Redford Presbyterian Church in Redford Township. She lived at the Presbyterian Village in Redford Township for 13 years. Before that she lived in St. Clair Shores, Pleasant Ridge and Royal Oak.

She is survived by sons James, David and Bruce Moyes; a stepdaughter, Evelyn Reid; a stepson, Walter Soellner; 10 grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; a brother, and a sister. Red Cross expands hours for blood collection DETROIT The American Red Cross will open most of its blood-collection centers in southeastern Michigan on Sunday and Jan. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., to offset a serious shortfall in collections during the holidays. "Southeastern Michigan needs 5,000 people to donate blood per week to meet the needs of patients in our community," Mark Cornillie, spokesperson for the Red Cross' Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region, said Thursday.

"We expect that we will not even be able to collect half of that." For information or to schedule an appointment, call 1-800-582-4383 anytime. Detroit is 63rd of 75 on environmental list Detroit Honolulu, Hawaii, is the "greenest" metropolitan area in the country, according to the 1993 Information Please Environmental Almanac, which ranks the environmental quality of the 75 U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of more than 500,000. Detroit is 63rd in the rankings, which are based on factors such as air and water quality, transportation practices, emissions of toxic chemicals and energy use. 8k Jill! (to FM DEATHS ELSEWHERE Richard Ichord, 66, a former Missouri congressman who was the last chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee, died Friday of complications from a heart attack in Nevada City, Mo.

A conservative Democrat, Mr. Ichord retired from Congress in 1981 after 10 terms. He fought charges of repression and red-baiting to keep the subversive-hunting committee, later named the Internal Security Committee, in operation. Over his House voted to disband it in 1975. Upon his retirement, the Pentagon gave him the Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the Army's highest honor for civilian contributions.

Helen Joseph, 87, a long-time anti-" apartheid activist in South Africa, died of complications from a stroke Friday in Johannesburg. Born in England, she came to South Africa at the age of 26 and spent nearly three decades as a "listed" person, meaning she could not be publicly quoted. She was tried for treason along with Nelson Mandela, now president of the African National Congress, and then-ANC leader Albert Luthuli South Africa's first Nobel Peace laureate, but was acquitted in 1961. Harvey Schiller, executive director of the U.S. Olympic Committee, told the university this month that the committee has approved a $300,000 grant to help carry the center through the 1994 winter Olympics. The committee already provides $570,000 of the center's annual budget.
