1'HE DETROIT NEWS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1995 College football Scoring summary UM Game Report Pressure makes Tigers pussycats i Va if i i It's fortunate for the Wolverines that the defense was able to defuse the Tigers. The Michigan offense was awful. Quarterback Scott Dreisbach was sacked twice deep in Memphis territory and seemed out of rhythm throwing the ball. Wolverines ball carriers fumbled four times. George Howell's fumble in the fourth quarter was scooped up by Jerome Woods, who ran 28 yards for the Tigers' score.

The defense set up two of Michigan's three touchdowns. Freshman cornerback Charles Woodson picked off Oden's rushed pass in the first quarter to set up Michigan's first score, Tim Biakabu-tuka's 3-yard run. In the tJiird quarter, Oden was hit by Horn and fumbled. Zenkewicz recovered. That set up Michigan's third score, a 3-yard run by Eddie Davis.

The defense showed its true muscle in the second half. Memphis got one first down in the second half and never threatened the goal line, despite getting a couple of gifts from the Michigan offense. Freshman Clarence Williams fumbled at the Michigan 37. Four plays later, Rob Swett intercepted an Oden pass. Oden was rushed by Clarence Thompson and Horn.

By Chris McCosky The Detroit Sews All week, Trent Zenkewicz and his defensive teammates fretted about Memphis and its option attack. "They have a large offensive line, one of the biggest we'll face," Zenkewicz said. "They rely on that option and that's difficult for us because it's something we don't see too often." Relax. The Wolverines dismantled the Tigers in the first half, reducing them basically to one option: Either pass or punt-On the Tigers' first eight possessions, they managed 4 yards rushing in 20 attempts. And it got progressively worse.

"The key is pressure," Zenkewicz said before the game. "We need to create pressure, not just the linemen but the defensive backs as well." That's exactly what happened. Zenkewicz, Will Carr, Jason Horn and Juaquin Feazell cracked and broke the Tigers' offensive line and wreaked constant havoc on the option game. Twelve times, Tigers backs were met and stopped in the backfield. Feazell had two tackles for losses of 10 yards on the first two series.

Horn had a 9-yard sack and linebacker Ian Lessig I The Detroit Newi U-M's Mercury Hayes demonstrates keen concentration on a 59-yard catch. Dazzling play Mercury Hayes always will be remembered for his 15-yard touchdown reception with no time left, giving Michigan an 18-17 win over Virginia. But he topped that with A lan LessigThe Detroit News Michigan's Mercury Hayes breaks away for a touchdown in the first quarter. But a holding penalty nullified the score. a showy, acrobatic catch in the first half Mike Elston a 5-yard sack.

Carr had a sack in the fourth quarter. The defense created 28 yards in losses in the first half alone. Tigers quarterback Bernard Oden was the recipient of an almost inhumane beating. He was hit when he ran, hit when he pitched and hit when he tried to pass. Twice he left the field limping.

With 6:05 left in the second quarter, Hayes surrounded by three defenders somehow managed to catch a 58-yard pass from Scott Dreisbach. The ball was tipped by Memphis' Jerome Woods toward Hayes, who popped up the ball with his left hand before making a two-handed catch and giving Michigan a first down at the Memphis 5-yard line. Foiled attempt With the ball on the Memphis 13, the Wolverines went for it on fourth down, needing a yard for the first down. But Chris Howard was denied and credited with no gain, giving the Tigers the ball at their 13.

Big hits The Wolverines, who entered with nine sacks after two games, added two in the first half. Bernard Oden was sacked by Mike Elston for a 5-yard loss and by Jason Horn for a 9-yard loss. It was the third sack for Horn and first for Elston this season. Big plays U-M true freshman Charles Woodson, who made his first start against Illinois, got another first against Memphis. Woodson ended the Tigers' second drive of the game, intercepting an Oden pass at the Memphis 20.

The turnover led to Michigan's first score. Sophomore Rob Swett gave the Wolverines their third interception of the season when he picked off an Oden pass early in the second half. Senior defensive tackle Trent Zenkewicz came up with a big fumble recovery late in the third quarter. It led to Michigan's third touchdown. Fumble-itis The Wolverines, who had recovered their only two fumbles entering the Memphis game, were not so fortunate against the Tigers.

Tshimanga Biakabutuka fumbled on the Memphis 2 in the first half, and Tony Williams recovered for the Tigers. In the second half, Clarence Williams lost the ball in Michigan territory. Marquis Bowling recovered, giving the Tigers the ball on the U-M 37. Quick change Joe Borich started at quarterback for Memphis, but he was in for only one series before being replaced by Oden. The Tigers rotated their quarterbacks series by series, until their final drive of the first quarter.

Oden, a Prop 48 last season, was in for that drive and remained in the game. Punting woes Mike Coughlin, who had a career-long 61-yard punt in Memphis' opener at Mississippi State, had a rough punting performance for the Tigers in the first half against U-M. He shanked his first punt 11 yards, and two punts later, his effort was nearly blocked by Clint Copenhaver. Coughlin's first punt of the second quarter was a 16-yarder that gave Michigan the ball on the Memphis 33. But the Wolverines' scoring drive was stopped at the Memphis 2 when Biakabutuka fumbled.

Thanks to Hayes, Coughlin was credited with a 53-yarder midway through the second quarter. Hayes chose to let the punt go, and it bounced from the Memphis 45 to the Michigan 37. Sharing the duties Michigan's Paul Peristeris, who challenged Nate DeLong for the starting punting job during preseason practice, played against Memphis. Peristeris, whose only punt this season came against Illinois, hit a 42-yarder in the second half his second-longest of the season. His lone punt against the Illini went 43 yards.

Problem at home Remy Hamilton has had a rough time with field-goal attempts at Michigan Stadium. He missed one in the opener against Virginia, and against Memphis, he failed on a 45-yarder and was successful on a 29-yarder. He is 2-for-4 on field goal attempts this season. Angelique S. Chengelis Alan LessigThe Detroit News Michigan defender Jason Horn zeros in on Memphis quarterback Bernard Oden to drop him for a 9-yard loss on the sack.

UM Notebook Name game: Perles bounces Biakabatuka off his wife For all its mistakes on offense, the Wolverines' defense managed to keep Memphis out of the game. Memphis was held to only four yards rushing and 72 passing. The Wolverines had 217 yards in total offense, including 123 passing. Michigan's second half opened with another turnover. Clarence Williams fumbled the ball away during the Wolverines' first possession, but the Tigers' ensuing drive was stopped at the U-M 26 when Rob Swett intercepted Bernard Oden.

Three possessions later, on a drive initiated by a Trent Zenkewicz fumble recovery at the Memphis 20, Ed Davis gave Michigan its third touchdown on a 3-yard run. Remy Hamilton, who missed a 45-yard field goal attempt in the fourth, gave Michigan its final score on a 29-yarder with 3:21 left in the game. UM Continued from Page ID fumbled on the Memphis 3, and the Tigers recovered but were unable to move the ball beyond their own 10 yard line. With six minutes left in the half, Biakabutuka ran off right tackle 10 yards for his second score, giving Michigan a 14-0 advantage. The drive was sparked by a spectacular 58-yard reception by Mercury Hayes, caught between three Memphis defenders.

The Wolverines were inefficient during their final drive of the first half. Michigan, which has emphasized careful play and had not been overly penalized heading into the game, was penalized twice during the drive and never got past the U-M 22. By Chris McCosky The Detroit News The joke was that he must have" made the wrong turn on US-127, but George Perles actually was at the right stadium Saturday. While his former team, Michigan State, was playing host to Nebraska, Perles was at Michigan Stadium making his debut as a college football commentator on PASS-Sports. Tve done my homework, so I'm not nervous," Perles said.

"I always said that if you've done your work, you don't need to worry about the test." Part of the homework was practicing the pronunciation of Michigan tailback Tim Biakabatuka. "I called my wife Biakabatuka this morning," Perles said, pronouncing the name expertly. "She about hit me." As for the Spartans, Perles said he was with them in spirit. "They have a tough chore there, but it's not like they have to win," he said. "They just play a good game and be as competitive as they can." As for the Wolverines, Perles sees the makings of a champion.

"This is a happy football team and you don't see that very often," Perles said. "They really have something special, and I'm not talking about talent. The chemistry is very good." Perles, along with play-by-play man Michael Reghi, will do at least three more games this season and as many as seven. Tourists or players? The Memphis players, dressed in suits, huddled at midfield of an empty Michigan Stadium at about 10:30 a.m. and got a rousing talk from coach Rip Scherer.

Then several groups broke off and posed for pictures at various locations throughout the stadium. Is this a vacation, or what? Missed opportunities The score at halftime was but don't be misled. Michigan squandered three scoring opportunities. Mercury Hayes had a 67-yard touchdown run called back by a holding call on Michigan's first possession. Lloyd Carr opted against a short field goal attempt late in the first quarter.

Leading 7-0, the Wolverines drove to the Memphis 13. On 4th-and-l, Chris Howard was stopped for no gain. With 6:10 left in the first half, Biakabatuka fumbled at the Memphis 2. Tony Williams recovered for the Tigers. Oct.
