The surgery prevented her from participating with her husband, artist George Ortman, in the opening of their joint show at Detroit Artists Market in January 1991. And it greatly diminished her output, said Gerry Craig, art director for Detroit Artists Market.

But Ms. Whidden had already earned a place in the art world. Her paintings hang in major museums including the Detroit Institute of Art, the Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the museum at the Honolulu Academy of Art. Ms. Whidden's paintings were notable for "the sense of playfulness and joy, which also contained a certain edge of anxiety or mystery," Craig said.

The graceful lines were influenced by Ms. Whidden's background in jazz and ballet dance and choreography, Craig said. Ms. Whidden died of congestive heart failure Saturday at her home in Bloomfield Hills. She was 77.

A Bloomfield Hills resident since 1970, she worked with her husband, who was head of the graduate painting department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. They maintained a summer studio in Castine, Maine. "She had a great knowledge and understanding of art," said Roy Slade, president of Cranbrook Academy. "Her lively wit and critical eye enriched the education of many, many students at the academy during the 20 years she lived at Cranbrook." As one of the American artists who emerged on the world scene in the '40s and '50s, he said, she brought a wonderful sense of that period to students. The former Constance Overlock grew up in Cambridge, where she began studying painting at age 13.

She was a graduate of the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. Survivors include her son Roger Whidden and two granddaughters. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Church Cranbrook, 470 Church, Bloomfield Hills. PAULINE BANYAI, 72, who spent her life in the flower business, died of heart failure in her sleep Friday while visiting her son in Wilmington, Del.
