It was a silly waste of time (vehicles modified for disabled drivers now must have automatic transmissions), but he got it in his head that he wanted to drive a manual car and was determined to prove he could do it.

Then he got into a dispute with a state trooper who wanted Hockenberry to move his wheelchair from the special rack on the side to the bed of his truck. When Hock-enberry's explanation he couldn't reach the wheelchair unless it was positioned exactly where it was failed to sway the cop, he tried to drive away, creating a potentially dangerous confrontation, with cops, guns drawn, surrounding the truck. He has the same attitude professionally. Hockenberry isn't only riding a wave of success, he is aboard the Wheelchair Enterprise, boldly going where no four-wheeled reporter has ever gone before. In a sense, his disability helps him.

He stands out or sits out in. a crowd of reporters, and officials, perhaps out of pity, perhaps impressed with his determination, frequently carry him places off-limits to other reporters. "First of all, people are curious when their expectations are shaken up a little bit," Hockenberry says. "They say to themselves, 'He's not some reporter like everybody else. What's he all We start having conversations, and pretty soon we're friends.

It's easier to develop a relationship when both people are curious. A lot of times they end up spilling their guts to me because we're friends from the get-go." Very often, though, getting the story was only a secondary goal for Hockenberry. He went to the most dangerous places to assert his independence, to show that he could do it. It wasn't until he was in a muddy field in Kurdistan that he asked himself why he was there. He did not entirely enjoy the answer.

"If I was up there for me and not for the people who were being bombed and starved, if I was up there trying to prove some point and not tell the story of these starving refugees the thought that it might be possible, that that might be my motive, drove me crazy." It was a valuable lesson for him and not only professionally. He came to recognize that the independence he sought, the ability to do it all on his own, wasn't really freedom. "What made me free was when I could actually ask for help," John Hockenberry now says. "I spent a lot of time saying, 'Hey, I don't need any wasting time doing things the hard way." Curt Schleier is a New Jersey-based freelance writei 252369 Sportscenter (R) 621475 WHEELS Continued from Page IE You can't deny that you can't feel your legs," Hockenberry says. "It's a fact.

I know I'm not going to walk tomorrow. The idea that people normally deny this and then normally get angry and then normally accept this is psychological malarky. No one has shown me the statistics that this is what we go through. "I don't think there's anything normal about denial. Psychologists present this to you like it's the script for how you're supposed to be a paraplegic.

You're in an accident where the driver dies and you're bleeding and can't feel anything when you touch your knees; you don't need a whole lot of psychological mumbo-jumbo to recognize you're not going to walk again." People regularly ask him whether he ever contemplated committing suicide, a question he can't relate to. "The human race constantly goes through acts of coping and dealing with adversity," he says. "The sun moves a tiny bit, and we're all dead. The idea that I break my back and boom, it's all over with, I think goes against the general human experience. I think it's abnormal to contemplate suicide.

"The idea that one thing comes along and you're going to stick the gun in your mouth, maybe the people on the Oprah show deal with life this way. I don't understand why it's so amazing to people (that I never thought about suicide). I think it's more amazing to sit around and look at television all the time. I would say, 'You are so courageous to watch TV every Committing suicide for that makes more sense to me." After a stay in a rehabilitation hospital, hilariously described in the book, Hockenberry resumed his life. He went back to school briefly, got a job at a home for develop-mentally disabled adults and began his broadcast career as a volunteer at an Oregon NPR When Mt.

St. Helens erupted in Washington state, it provided an opportunity to free-lance, to do 60-second reports and actually earn money $30 a pop for NPR. Over the next dozen years, he worked his way up the ranks: general assignment reporter at National Public Radio, then foreign correspondent and host of a number of NPR programs. Then finally the big move to ABC News, where he was a regular on the now-defunct Day One news magazine. He's awaiting a new assignment.

It's an amazing accomplishment considering not only his physical disability but the giant chip he has on his shoulder, a frustration, an anger that manifests itself in interesting ways. Channel 62, a latecomer in the game of buying programing, has had to make do with the Richard Bey talk show. As a result, the 3 p.m.-8 p.m. time period at Channel 62 looks like the Bermuda Triangle of local TV, sucking everything down with it.

Deep in the vortex is Rather. The CBS Evening News in July averaged a 2 rating in Detroit. By comparison, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw on Channel 4 averages a 12 rating. (A rating point equals 17,000 homes in Metro Detroit.) Newman is hoping that time and lots of cash will cure Channel 62's problems. Seinfeld reruns will when they begin airing at 6 p.m.

next month. In addition, the tabloid news magazines Hard Copy and A Current Affair will air between 7 and 8 p.m. starting in September. Channel 62's competitors acknowledge that the station will become a force in bidding for syndicated programing in the future. But while it's doing that, the CBS prime-time schedule this fall may not help.

Harvey Rabinowitz, a senior vice-president at Southfield-based ad firm W.B. Doner thinks CBS will continue to trail NBC and ABC nationally. "NBC continues to expand out with their high-profile sitcoms, and ABC has made some interesting moves. CBS is sticking to their tried-and-true formulas," says Rabinowitz. "We don't predict a major increase in audience for CBS." "It's a long, firm build," says 62's Newman.

"It's not going to happen overnight and not in a straight line. We're in this for the long haul." Meanwhile, CBS' Poltrack is praying for a few hit shows this fall: "If we can get some upward movement and get some excitement about our new shows, people will find us." Continued froiri Page IE "We're obviously just getting started," says Jay Newman, the CBS executive who runs Channel 62. "While we've been able to attract hundreds of thousands of viewers and reached penetration in the market that many people thought was not possible last year, we still have a long way to go." But there are other complications to regaining the CBS audience here: Channel 62 has no high-powered syndicated programing such as Oprah Winfrey to draw viewers; it faces an uncertain future with West-inghouse Electric which announced earlier this month that it would buy CBS and CBS' crucial prime-time schedule, which dropped to third place in the ratings race last season, may remain there in the coming year. Channel 62 officials feel they've made a good start since buying the station last fall from a black Masonic group after Channel 2 dropped its CBS affiliation. But Detroit's television audience is stable it neither grew nor shrank in the last year, according to the A.C.

Nielsen Co. So every viewer gained by Channel 62 must come from another station. Literally every viewer becomes a battle. While CBS has suffered, Channel 2 is also feeling some pain. As Channels 4 and 7 stayed relatively stable in the July ratings, Channel 2's average audience share dropped from 14 percent a year ago to 9 percent last month behind Channel 50.

One key area Channel 62 has to repair is its lack of syndicated programing. Channel 7 (WXYZ) has highly rated syndicated shows such as Oprah Winfrey and Regis Kathie Lee. Channel 4 (WDIV) has Montel.
