The producers of this edition, titled "Class Photo," managed to track down 21 of the 25 young men and women, all black, who posed for the fourth-grade picture in the 1981-82 school year. Len Cannon's interviews bring out the dangers and lures of their streets. One young man tells of leaving school in the 11th grade to escape beatings from tougher kids, "It was either go to school and take the chance of being killed, or dropping out." Others tell simply of craving money to keep up with the neighborhood swaggerers. One says that dealing drugs and mugging people "ain't the only way, but it's the fastest way." The difference between those who finished school and those who went to prison is traced largely to their families. The lucky few had two parents at home (only four of the youngsters were that lucky) or, at least, a strong mother or grandmother to help them resist the who finished went on to college, but six girls did.

Perhaps, as suggested here, the boys could not make up for a missing father. Perhaps it was the lack of prospects.
