WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1992DETROIT FREE PRESS 7C Tigers' Aldred, Ritz lost in draft team-by-teum selections Vy sm-m. v-- w The selections by the Cokxado Rockies and the FtoridaMarfcis Baseball, from Page ic have lost them for nothing on waivers," Tigers general manager Jerry Walker said. "So it became a question of whether we should risk losing them then, or risk losing them now and protecting someone who still has options. . . . "I think both will agree they have had chances with our club." Because of their bad seasons, Aldred and Ritz were two of the bigger gambles taken by Colorado or Florida. Ritz missed the final two months of the season with elbow tendinitis. Ritz's selection prompted the loudest reaction of the day it sounded like a gasp from media members and a handful of spectators in a ballroom at the Marriott Marquis. Perhaps this was because of Ritz's notorious control problems, which he curbed somewhat last season. The two new NL clubs, who both took more pitchers than position players, basically drafted for the long run. They passed on many expensive big names and took primarily either fringe major leaguers or minor-league prospects they believe have potential. The only big name selected was California ace reliever Bryan Harvey, taken by Florida late in the first round. The Angels left him unprotected because of his recent arm surgery and The selections by the Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins in the 1992 major league basebal expansion draft. Player listed with overall number in draft in parentheses, position and former team: New teams deal; MitcMl to Reds Free Press Wire Reports The National League's two newest teams totaled six trades after Tuesday's expansion draft, but the biggest deal of the day came when the Cincinnati Reds acquired slugging outfielder Kevin Mitchell from the Seattle Mariners for lefthander Norm Charlton. Mitchell had a majors-leading 47 home runs and 125 RBIs in 1989 with San Francisco. He hit .286 for the Mariners last season with nine homers and 67 RBIs. Charlton had 26 saves for the Reds last season. He was 4-2 with a 2.99 ERA. Minutes after the draft, the Florida Marlins made four trades and the Colorado Rockies two: MARLINS Catcher Eric Hetfand, drafted from Oakland, was returned to the Athletics for shortstop Walt Weiss and a player to be named. Left-hander Danny Jackson, taken from Pittsburgh, was dealt to Philadelphia for pitching prospects Joel Adamson and Matt Whisenant. Jackson also played for the Chicago Cubs this season, making the Phillies his fourth team of the year. The Marlins sent left-hander Greg Hibbard, drafted from the Chicago White Sox, to the Chicago Cubs for shortstop Alex Arias and Gary Scott. Pitcher Tom Edens, drafted from Minnesota, was traded to Houston for two prospects, Brian Griffiths and Hector Carrasco. ROCKIES Dealt their fifth pick in the first round, outfielder Kevin Reimer of Texas, to the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Dante Bichette. Infielder Jody Reed, the seventh selection In the draft from Boston, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for reliever Rudy Seanez. COLORADO ROCKIES FLORIDA MARLINS because they thought his high salary (three years left on his contract) would discourage Florida from taking him. Colorado made right-handed starter David Nied the first player taken in the draft. Nied made it to the majors for the first time late this season. Florida's first pick was minor league outfielder Nigel Wilson from Toronto. It was no surprise that Atlanta and Toronto provided the first two picks; they are two of baseball's most talented organizations. The Tigers' comparatively thin talent was shown in the third round, in which only eight of 14 AL clubs could Flrtt bats: Eric Wedge (48), Boston. The Tigers were one of six that didn't. The unprotected Tigers not taken in the first round were pitchers John Kiely and Mark Leiter and two hitters who were former first-round picks, Phil Clark and Rico Brogna. The Tigers, like all AL clubs, could protect four more players for the second round and four more for the third. Walker said Ritz would have been protected for the third round. The Tigers' streak of not developing starting pitchers might finally be broken by John Doherty, who came up through the system as a reliever. Walker said Tuesday that he also expects David Haas and Greg Gohr to get full shots at next year's rotation. Walker said he has spoken to the agents for some free agents from other clubs but that he's concentrating on signing the Tigers' free agents. Let's talk trade: Fielder-Abbott NEW YORK Cecil Fielder for Jim Abbott? I The Tigers and California Angels , haven't discussed such a trade, but the seeds for it now exist. California general manager Whitey Herzog told Tigers general manager Jerry Walker at Tuesday's expansion draft that left-hander Abbott remains available. Fielder's name didn't come up in the discussion. But Fielder has demanded a trade, and although Herzog can't mention his name for fear of tampering, there are strong indications the Angels are interested in him. The Angels need a first baseman and run producer. Further, if the Angels acquired Fielder, he couldn't leave them as a free agent for five seasons because he demanded a trade. If Fielder isn't traded, he could become a free agent after next season. Abbott, who played at Flint Central and the University of Michigan, would be an ultimate acquisition for the Tigers because he could greatly improve two weak areas: the starting rotation and the gate. Herzog has been seeking three players for Abbott, but it is believed Herzog would be willing to take two players from the Tigers for Abbott, assuming Fielder was one of the two.
