Except for his .255 average, Chet Lemon had a decent season at the plate last summer. But few ever want to talk about his hitting. Lemon hit a personal record 24 home runs. He beat Toronto with a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth on Aug. 28.

He had 1 1 game-winning RBIs. He had five RBIs in one game. He got hit i games Kirk Gibson heard his first heckler of the season Sunday team owner Tom Monaghan. The boss gently needled Gibson about not hitting anything over the fence during batting practice. Gibson's response: "We're supposed to be hitting line drives" Aurelio Lopez pitched about 15 minutes of batting practice Saturday, recovering from his sore hand sooner than expected General manager Bill La-joie says Barbara Garbey's probation will expire May 15.

Garbey got in trouble last summer when he went after a heckler with a bat after a game in Evansville. Lemon had played in center during his six years in Chicago, but he switched to right because manager Sparky Anderson asked him. "I came over here with a reputation that I was difficult, but that's so far from me. So when they asked "Playing right field wasn't real difficult.

I didn't want to play it, that was my problem. It affected me so much mentally. I wasn't happy." In center, a player can be a linchpin, Lemon said. He can do so many things to help the club if he just takes charge. Lemon, for instance, watches the catcher's signs, and lets left-fielder Larry Herndon know, for example, if the hitter might be pulling if the pitch is a slow curve or change-of-pace.

The signal isn't complicated. "I say, 'OK, Herndon, here we "Even if it's only a step, or if he's only anticipating getting the ball, so much better. Sometimes you can fall asleep in the outfield." Lemon talks about the three outfielders as a team. This season, there will be a new member of the squad, Kirk Gibson, the designated right fielder, yet another Kaline heir. And the presence of Lemon is one reason Anderson feels safe to experiment. Gibson, says Lemon, "has to get out there and work and be aggressive." He also must get a good start, especially with his well-remembered goofs of last year in right dogging him into the new season. "I really think the first few games Gibson plays will tell the story," Lemon said. "Gibson now really looks good the way he gets jumps on the ball and charges ground balls." Gibson, like Lemon, didn't want to play right, either, but Gibson says he has changed his mind. "Hopefully, Kirk is over that," Kaline said.

"He knows that's where he has to play if he's going to play every day." Said Lemon: "I'll try to do whatever I can to help Gibson."
