The good-natured Texan, who was thp rid ing champion at Hazel Park's fall meet in 1971, knows what lean times are. Until Thursday he had only one winner to show for the last three weeks here. A SUSPENSION for careless riding put him out of action for five days recently and he had ridden 20 losers in a row until he replied "Yes I Will" with No I Won't. The six-year-old mare staggered home by only a neck in the fifth race. Miss White had considered leaving Hazel Park for another track, but decided to stick it out to the end of thp meet in three more weeks.

With two other apprentices sidelined by suspensions, she is one of the few "bug" riders available to horsemen. At the close of Hazel Park she figures to head for Pennsylvania, where she plans to ride at Pocono Downs outside Wilkesbarre. Strauss, on the other hand, will move to the Detroit Race Course and he should be going as one of the top 10 riders from Hazel Park. With Thursdays double, he climbed into seventh place in the standings with 25 winners for the meet. BY AL COFFMAN Free Press Racing Writer Black jockette Cheryl White struck a blow for Women's Lib at Hazel Park Thursday at the expense of R.

O. (Dick) Strauss, one of the leading black riders in the United States. In the proces of beating Strauss, she also ended a long losing streak that stretched bark nearly three months to the last day of the winter met at the five-eighths' mile track. For Cheryl it was 40 rides ago and almost 12 weeks since she had won with Mr. and Mrs.

D. C. Armstrong's sprinter Ful Pen. The date was Saturday, April 15. RIDING Ful Pen again, Miss White gained her first victory since then and it was worth $.10.40 for $2 to the longshot bettors in the crowd of 8,591.

The 18-year-old girl jockey could thank Strauss for not adding to her troubles. Dick might have claimed foul against Cheryl for drifting out in front of him and his horse, Snake Dancer, coming down the stretch. But he didn't, even though he lost by only three-quarters of a length. Strauss got his reward later in the afternoon.
