WKBD-TV never found a replacement." THE OTHER personality most identified with Channel 50 is Bill Kennedy. Debonair, man about the movies, Kennedy was snapped up by WKBD-TV in 1969 when he was released by CKLW-TV. On Kennedy's WKBD-TV movie matinee series, the film was secondary; his intermission interviews with show business personalities and reminiscences of his Hollywood days, were the heart of the show.

Kennedy delighted in his boulevardier image, but never really took himself seriously unless a reporter inadvertently made him the wrong age or questioned his movie credits. Then, angry handwritten letters flew. In 1984, after more than 25 years on Detroit TV, Kennedy, 77, retired to his Florida home. When Kennedy retired, station vice-president and general manager George Williams remarked that Gordon and Kennedy were "one-of-a-kind personalities, who in the '70s, were this town's most popular, most famous people in TV, far bigger than the news anchors." Gordon and Kennedy were the best known names from WKBD-TV's personality era, but plenty of others established themselves on the station. Ken Thomas, Woody Willis and Tim O'Brien were in the Channel 50 newsroom at one time.

Bruce Martyn and Ray Lane anchored sports coverage during the early years. Tom Ryan, now better known as Count Scary, started in TV Many familiar Detroiters had programs on Channel 50. Clockwise, from bottom left. Ray Lane, Coleman Young, Ken Thomas, Jeanne Findlater and Tom Ryan. Aji- am ffi 4f wP CHANNEL 50, from Page 1C year's programming at WKBD-TV included 35 Red Wings road games and the playoffs, Pistons basketball, college football and basketball, area high school football and basketball, wrestling, roller games and horse racing.

"The Little Rascals," Jack LaLanne exercises and old Western movies filled out the early schedule. The offerings expanded with cartoons, "I Love Lucy" (still a regular), "Superman," "The Honeymooners," more movies and Lou Gordon. FOR THE next 12 years, until his death in 1977, if there was a symbol of Channel 50, it was the man with the sharp tongue and brown toupee. Gordon was a wealthy manufacturer's representative with a taste for politics and a background in newspapering. He had been doing a five-minute news and commentary show on WXYZ radio since 1957, with an occasional appearance on WXYZ-TV.

On Channel 50, Gordon started with a Sunday show and added another show on Saturday. Eventually, his show was seen in seven cities. Gordon, with his, "Is it true you've stopped beating your wife?" style of interviewing, became hero to some and villain to others. His guests respected, feared and occasionally hated him. Many did the show as a challenge, to beat Gordon at his own game.

It rarely worked. Gov. George Wallace, of Alabama, tore off his microphone and walked out of a Gordon show. Frank Sinatra Jr. was so incensed by a Gordon interview, he warned his friends to keep away from the show.

The most famous Gordon show incident happened in August 1967. Former Michigan governor George Romney had just returned from a visit to South Vietnam. Romney told Gordon that he felt he had been brainwashed by the generals and diplomatic corps. Romney said he no longer felt it was necessary for the U.S. to be involved in Vietnam.

Gordon made the most of the brainwashing quote, alerting newspapers and broadcasters. In his book, "The Making of the President 1968," Theodore White wrote that the incident ended Romney's chances as a presidential candidate. Gordon enjoyed his considerable political clout. Ordinary viewers liked him best when he took their side. With his wife, Jackie, smiling gently as she read him viewer questions, Gordon would face the camera and rail against giants such as the phone company after a rate hike.

Gordon once said, "I like to consider myself the people's advocate the voice of dissent or both." 1 wm I "We've grown and we're going to continue to grow," says Williams, now in his 10th year as general manager. "We offer viewers an alternative to the network stations. Our successful 5 (p.m.) to 8 p.m. block is a good example. We offer children's programs and comedies as an alternative to news and game shows.

We had our 'Unconventional Movie' when the networks had only politics. Jeanne Findlater, now vice-president and general manager of WXYZ-TV, Channel 7, was persuaded by Gordon to give up newspapering at the Free Press and get into television production following the 1968 newspaper strike. She worked with Gordon at WKBD-TV until 1971 when she joined WXYZ-TV. ONLY FOUR years after Channel 50 went on the air, Kaiser's gamble on a UHF station paid off. WKBD-TV had more viewers than CKLW-TV, Chan-j nel 9, the first time a UHF station topped a VHF station in a market where VHF stations dominated. Ten years later, in 1979, the Nielsen ratings showed WKBD-TV to be the highest rated UHF independent station in the country, and ranked seventh among all independent stations.

Success has continued through three owners. Field Enterprises took over from Kaiser in 1977, and Cox Communications bought the station from Field in 1984 for $70 million. ier cm mm 12:152104:05 6:007:459:20 11 12:45 2:30 4:15 6:00 7:45 9:20 "EDDIE MURPHY COMES OUT SHOOTING FROM THE FUNNY BONE AND IT'S BULL'S-EYES ALL THE WAY." -Pter Travwt, PIOPLt MAGAZINE HILLS WKBD to expand news coverage ffffk PARAMOUNT PICTURE IVJDtUI tVAfDPreiBM WCHARDGERE GREGORY HINES DIANE LANE LONETTE McKEE 'THE COTTON CLUB" BO0h5sKIN5 JAME5 REMAR NICOLAS CAGE ALLEN GARFIELD FRED GVTNNE JOHN BARRY STEPHEN GOLDQLATT Conumet Deugned by ProoVclKm Omignet iupetviwng Ediiot PioOucw Conwlionf MILENA CANON ER0 RICHARD SYLBERT BARRY MALKIN MILTON FORMAN Co Producwi xtxuiwe Produce Lne Pnduceo SYLV10 TABETond FRED R0OS DYSON L0VELL BARRIE M. "We expect to start hiring staff within 90 days." Greg Neubacher, who joined Channel 50 as a news producer in 1982, has been appointed news director, said Williams. Neubacher came to 50 from WJBK, Channel 2, where he had worked in various capacities in the newsroom. Channel 50 had its own full-scale news operation from 1968 to 1972, when it was dropped because of a budget cut. Since then, the station has used various news forms and currently has five-minute local news spots and weather segments followed by a syndicated national news program from the Cable News Network Headline service. Joe Glover was Channel 50's local news anchor for a year after he was fired by Channel 2 in 1983.

Glenn Ray replaced him in August. Amyre Makeupson who has been news and public service manager for Channel 50 will continue her public service duties as well as her "Morning Break" show, 10:30 a.m., She also will contribute to the newscast.
