i I I I 6F DETROIT FREE PRESSSUNDAY, DEC. 4, 1983 Ho, ho, ho! Record gifts make for a musical Christmas arrangements from its sound for a grittier, funkier approach that returns to the joyfulness of the group'sj early days. An Innocent Man Billy Joel: (Columbia): In which our favorite! Ives' Second Symphony (CBS IM-37300): Michael Tilson Thomas leads Amsterdam's Con-certgebouw. Orchestra through this American classic with gusto as well as reverence, two qualities that perfectly suit Ives' unique musical style. Karajan's Mahler Fourth (DG 2531-205): Karajan brings mature joy to Mahler's sunniest symphony, and soprano Edith Mathis and Karajan's Berlin Philharmonic translate his conductori-al wishes beautifully.

Kremer and Muti Play Schumann and Sibelius (Angel DS-37957): The unduly neglected Schumann Violin Concerto gets its artistic due from Kremer, Muti and London's Philharmonia, while the oft-played Sibelius sounds fresh and new. Michelangeli's "Emperor" (DG 2531-385): In a performance recorded live, the patrician Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli gives us a regal, spellbinding reading of Beethoven's Fifth Concerto, ably backed up by Carlo Maria Giulini and the Vienna Symphony. Muti's Mozart (Angel DSCX-3940): "Cosi fan tutte" is a comic opera that can sound like a stale joke in the wrong hands. Muti and his cast, among them Kathleen Battle and Agnes Baltsa, inject happy vitality into its measures in this version, recorded live during a performance at the Salzburg Festival. classics from Page IF Partita (the latter includes the famous D-Minor Chaconne as its final movement) with brilliant conviction.

Glenn Gould's Brahms (CBS IM-37800): The late Canadian pianist displays little eccentricity and profound artistic insight in these performances, recorded shortly before his death. Home at La Scala (CBS M-37819): Here is one of the grandest voices of the century, performing at its peak in a live recital at Milan's La Scala that is exceptional in every detail. This is the best single recording I heard all year. piano man instructs all young men on the art of luring and keeping women. Hey, he's dating Christie Brinklev, so he must know some thing.

At turned in a the very least, he has wonderful collection of period songs, heartfelt tributes to! Sam Dave, Frankie Valli and oth-j ers of the genre. Uh-Huh John Cougar Mellen-i camp (Riva): Fer sure. The American! Fool sheds his pop punkhood for matured, insightful stance. The music sounds like the Stones, and the' lyrics sound like Charles Kuralt in! rock roll disguise. May Cougar: fight authority forever.

Synchronicity The Police; i IMil MICE rock pop from Page 1F The Crossing Big Country (Po-. lygram): See the Alarm and add! plaid shirts, jeans and guitars that! sound like bagpipes and reeds. Thei best debut album of the year. Big Chill Sound Track (Motown)J 25 No. 1 Hits from 25 Years (Mo-j town): If they're going to stick youj on a desert island with just one album, here are two leading candidates.

The 25th anniversary hit set is self-explanatory. The movie sound track which, by the way, should be a two-record set incorporates a few classic non-Motown tracks. Believer Chic (Atlantic): This! group knows how to stay vital.j After a stale period, the musicians! went out for solo projects and work with David Bowie, Paul Simon and! Southside Johnny Lyon. Then they! came back for a shining example of how they can cook when they really1 want to. 1 Infidels Bob Dylan (Colum-' bia): Un-born again, Dylan pulls his; head out of the scriptures and looks; at the world through gray-tintedj glasses.

This bleak observation oft current and personal affairs is atj -once repulsive and intriguing, deliv-i 'ered with Dylan's poetic depth andl angst. Electric Universe Earth, Wind 1and Fire (Columbia): Plug in thej -planets! This is the best disc this; outfit has put together in quite some! time. With the help of Feel song-: writers Page and Fairweather, EWF' has stripped the lush string and horn As a stocking stuffer, this one's both a safe bet and a risk. It's safe to assume anyone with taste should like it, but it's risky to think that after four hit singles and a MARTIN BREGMAN long stay at someone with taste doesn have iti RODUCTION A already. Undercover Rolling Stones (Rolling Stone): It's bloody.

It's aggressive. It's committed. And it's adventurous. Those, by the way, are the elements of the best Stones' albums. Hearts and Bones Paul Simonj (Warner Angst, anger and anj endless search for inner-peace.

The new spouse of Princess Leia, Simoni battles the Darth Vaders of the con-j science to an intriguing and melodious victory. m. EXECUTIVE PRODUCER MISA.MR PRODUCED BY MARTIN BREG jazz from Page 1F "his current band and reaches back to; the bedrock of blues for some of Davis' most memorable playing of these last few years. Top Drawer George Shearing and Mel Torme (Concord): Pianist Shearing and vocalist Torme are at; home with each other, kicking upi their heels on "Shine Your and "Hi Fly" and calling for the handkerchiefs on "How Do You Say: Auf Weidersehen." Think of One Wynton Marsa-lis (Columbia): After the smoke of hype clears about how young he is and about his put downs of Miles Davis' electric work and most of the avant-garde, Marsalis is still the most dynamic new voice on the trumpet in decades.

Showstopper Jamaaladeen Tacuma (Gramavision): If the hype -hasn't spread much past Marsalis, fact is that jazz has a healthy of new and relatively young -voices these days. Take bass guitar-' ist Tacuma. On his first album he; Igives most of side one over to his, -athletic notion of jazz fusion fori Side two ranges from a lush! chamber piece with opera diva Wil-l Ihelmeniacq Fernandez to smallj blowing sessions with folks; like saxophonist Julius Hemphill and, "guitarist James Blood Ulmer. REGGAE Confrontation Bob Marley and the Wailers (Island): A final remind-l er of how futile it is to ask who the; next Marley will be. Reggae may; find another Marley-sized but not another Marley.

His posthu-, mously released LP seems rough in spots. But overall, it is an album about commitment and struggle that! bears up to repeated listening. i Roots, Radics, Rockers, Reggae; Bunny Wailer (Shanachie): After the original three members of thej Wailers went their own ways withj their first taste of international fame, Bunny Wailer slowly faded' back to the hills of Jamaica while1 Marley and Peter Tosh trotted the globe. Out of his withdrawal though, Wailer has found his own; unique voice and sound. i The Power and the Glory Jimmy Cliff (Columbia): Cliff goes' through all the right moves to court) the market that made the marginally! reggae sounding "Reggae by Kool and the Gang the biggest reggae hit of the last couple of But for all its pop aspirations, the; album retains Cliff's personality.

BLUES Blues'N'Jazz B.B. King (MCA): Last time out, the folks at, MCA tried to recast King as a croon-i er-of-standards like Willie Nelson' and came up with one of his least successful albums ever. This time, it's back to the kind of blues and jumping jazz in which King and his guitar, Lucille, can have a good time and blow their tops with a rowdy big band. lN DIRECTED BY BRIAN DePALMA RESTRICTED -2H i. .1 ne-ii 1 F.
