'i 'M 1 I I DETROIT FREE Mar. 6, 1986 5C Death closes case Silverdome and insurer sue makers of roof i i 1 ft in di isappearance Donald DeArment By KEVIN T. McGEE Free Press Staff Writer A year after the Pontiac Silverdome's roof was destroyed in a winter storm, the stadium governing board and its former insurance company filed suit, seeking more than $11.5 million from the designers and builders of the structure. The lawsuit says the roof collapsed because of severe deficiencies in architecture, engineering and construction at the stadium, including its lighting system and roof drainage. On March 4 last year, the roof sagged under an accumulation of 135 tons of ice and snow.

It snagged on the lighting fixtures, ripped and soon was shredded by high winds. The Silverdome has been unable to secure full insurance coverage for the roof since its collapse. The 24-count lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Oak City-based architectural firm that served as consulting engineer, and its president, David Geiger. Owens Corning Fiberglas Corp. of Toledo, the company that designed, made and installed the Teflon-coated fiberglass roof.

Chemical Fabrics Corp. of Merrimack, N.H., which also was involved in the design, manufacture, marketing and sale of the roof. Birdair Structures Inc. of Buffalo, which participated in the design and manufacture of the roof's panels. Since the building of the Silverdome, Owens Corning and Chemical Fabrics have taken over Birdair, which now is known as OC-Birdair Inc.

Officials have said the cost of replacing the 10-acre, air-supported roof was $8.1 million. Adding improvements to guard against another collapse, the bill came to about $10.1 million, officials said. land County Circuit Court by Detroit attorney David Hayes for the Pontiac Stadium Building Authority and Affiliated F.M. Insurance Co. of Johnston, R.I.

Affiliated FM paid the Silverdome more than $9.35 million in repair costs and business losses as a result of the roof collapse. William Waterman, who discussed such a suit shortly after Silverdome authority members voted him chairman in January, said the insurance company initiated the suit. Named as defendants are: Barton-Malow Co. of Oak Park, principal construction firm on the 10-year-old stadium. O'Dell, Hewlett Luckenbach now known as Luckenbach-Ziegelman, a Birmingham architectural firm that designed the Silverdome.

Geiger, Berger Associates P.C., a New York By SANDY McCLURE Free Press Staff Writer Donald DeArment, a suspect who was never charged in the 1983 disappearance of his wife, Carol Kresge DeArment, died of cancer Wednesday at Harper Hospital in Detroit. He was 59. DeArment's lawyer, Robert Harrison of Birmingham, called DeArment's death "the final tragedy" in a sad tale of a failed marriage, bitterly contested divorce, suspected murder and police harassment of DeArment and his family. "He always told me he expected Carol would come back some day," Harrison said. Carol DeArment, 36, granddaughter of the late Stanley Kresge, heir to the S.S.

Kresge and mart retailing fortune, was reported missing Oct. 27, 1983. Her car was found in the garage of the Troy home the couple shared even though their divorce was pending and DeArment was forbidden by a court order from entering the room where his wife slept. "Because of the messiness of the divorce, Don became a suspect (in her disapperance) and a whole series of what I considered to be intrusive investigative techniques occurred," Harrison said. BLOOD FOUND in the trunk of DeArment's Mercedes became a key in the police investigation of his wife's disappearance.

But, since no record of Carol DeArment's blood type existed, Oakland County Prosecutor L. Brooks Patterson got a search warrant to draw blood from the couple's three children in an effort to deduce it. Patterson, reached Wednesday night in Florida, where he was visiting his father, said DeArment's death "closes the case" on Carol DeArment's disappearance. "As far as I am concerned, there will be no further investigation," Patterson said. "We'd like to find Carol for the sake of her family, but I'm aware of no other suspects." Harrison said he was aware for several months that DeArment, who moved to Bloomfield Hills from Troy with his three youngest children, had cancer.

DeArment, a metallurgist who owned four Macomb County auto supply firms, is survived by six children, five grandchildren, his mother, a sister and two brothers. Visitation is set foi 2:30 p.m. today at Price Funeral Home 3725 Rochester Road, Troy, where a service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday. Two killed in car chase by police in Taylor patrol cars on northbound Telegraph Road shortly before 3 a.m., Davis said.

The Brownstown police were called to Brownstown Square apartment complex at Telegraph, south of Sibley Road, by a woman tenant who said she saw three youths trying to steal cars in the parking lot. Soon after police arrived, the youths jumped into a 1985 Pontiac Grand Am that was reported stolen in Detroit earlier, police said. "Our cars were 300 to 400 yards behind them when they failed to negotiate a curve and struck the pole," said Brownstown Township Police Chief Christopher Gutowski. "Our sergeant figured they were in excess of 100 m.p.h." The accident occurred about a half mile over the Brownstown-Tay lor border, just north of the 1-75 connector and south of Eureka Road. Gutowski said the youths threw beer bottles out the car windows during the pursuit.

By JOHN CASTINE Free Press Staff Writer Two Detroit youths were killed and a third seriously injured in Taylor early Wednesday while trying to flee from police in a stolen car that struck a utility pole at more than 100 m.p.h., police said. Richard Joe Duvall 14, and Ronald Glenn Patrick, 17, were dead on arrival at Heritage Hospital in Taylor, according to police. An 18-year-old man was in intensive care at Heritage Wednesday, but his name was withheld until police could determine who was driving the car. "If it turns out he was the driver, there could be charges," said Taylor Cpl. Dick Davis.

"Manslaughter is what we would request. "The problem is that all three were ejected from the car." The three youths, all of Cabot Avenue in southwest Detroit, were being chased by two Brownstown Township Call us at 222-5000 Toll Free 1 800 572 3670 Michigan's Largest Morning Paper iWin fin ftrn 1 1 1 Help Wanted 222-6636 Death Notices 222-6813 Tr Merchandise 222-6880 rex vi IH Real Estate 222-6633 SSynJ1k no urn Detroit DEATH NOTICES 001 A Funerals Today 001 Death Notices 002 Funeral Directors 003 Florists 004 In Memoriam 005 Card of Thanks 006 Monuments 007 Cemetery Lots ANNOUNCEMENTS 016 Announcements 16A Business to Business 017 Physical Fitness 018 Personals 18A Companion Corner 019 Airline TicketsVacation Tours 19A Attorney Services 020 Happy Ads 022 Lost 4 Found 024 Transportation Car Pools 026 Farm Products 028 Food Guide 030 Christmas Trees EDUCATIONAL 031 Genl Education 033 TradeTechnical 035 Career Guidance 037 Music Instruction 039 Driving Instruction 040 Tutoring 354 Garage Equip 355 Automotive Parts and Accessories 356 Repair Painting 357 Cars Trucks Wtd 358 Cars Trucks Lease.
