Johnson seemed a happy man. Just the day before, he'd learned that his 18-month-old application to trade his UHF Channel 62 license for Channel 20 had been approved by the Federal Communications Commission. Now he sat in the conference room of his trim, cinder block station building, out there in the boonies. He looked relieved and he grinned a lot. "The lower the UHF channel number, the longer the wave length," the 45-year-old station owner-manager explained "We're going to be able to provide more effective area coverage.

And we're going to try to give a broader type of programming. We're even thinking about subscription (pay) programming." Johnson was a real estate developer in 1964 when he applied for Channel 44 in Pon-tiac. Over the next few years the FCC rearranged allocations of the nation's available TV airways. Result: Johnson wound up putting WXON-TV, Channel 62, Walled Lake, on the air In September, 1968. Walled Lake Is cm the northern edge of metropolitan Detroit.

NOW JOHNSON plans to sell the studio building he built there and move into the big town. He's mulling the possibility of changing the station's call letters. "We were advised that we could do a good coverage Job of Detroit from this location," Johnson recalled. "In theory, it was good advice. But in practice Unless you own a better than average antenna, or live in a northern area, Channel 62 for you may be just a ghostly image.

Johnson is counting on the channel change (which he hopes will be effective this fall) making his broadcasting efforts much better known. As it is, WXON-TV is about as independent as an "independent" station can get. An "independent" i a station without network affiliation. Often such independents are owned by large corporations able to provide financial muscle if and when needed. But Detroit's youngest sta-tlon has no corporate Big Daddy to turn to, and no network pipeline of slick product to rely on.

The only Big Daddies around are Johnson and one other investor, John Dan-aher of Grosse Pointe. The station menu consists primarily of science fiction and early rock 'n roll films, laced with reruns of "Ozzie Harriet" and "My Friend Flicka." "Leave It to Beaver" was a popular staple for a long time. But, Johnson grinned, four complete run-throughs of the 250-epdsode series were probably enough for a while.
