collene football report DETROIT FREE PRESSSUNDAY, OCT. 26, 1986 1 1 1I0U statistics White's Heisman goal gone for '86 How they scored HI 2d 3d 4tti Final Purdut Michigan Statt 3 0 0 10 14 a 3 37 I George EAST LANSING Not this time, Lorenzo White. Not this year. And maybe not next year, either. That's the way it goes.

The Heisman Trophy might be the grail of college football's glamor performers, but nobody wins it on a guarantee, or even a promise. Somebody filled Lorenzo's head and heart with the notion the Heisman could be his, and it can't. All the talk about was gratifying, but talk never filled a trophy case. Finally, White, the junior tailback sensation from Michigan State University, is beginning to realize it. "Last year, I had the yards and not the hype," he said, "and now I've got the hype and not the yards." It's as simple as that.

So long, gridiron grail. White didn't have the yards Saturday, either, as MSU romped over pitiful Purdue, 37-3, In a homecoming celebration before 77,063 in Spartan 21 loss to Iowa. He missed the Spartans' 27-6 loss at Michigan and their 29-21 victory last Saturday at Illinois. No Heisman ever went to a player missing such a significant part of a season, which shows you luck plays a role in determining the outstanding collegiate player of the year the Heisman distinction. This might have been the day for White at least to thrust himself back Into the national spotlight, because the Spartans were playing an embarrassingly weak Purdue team which has won only once this season.

Purdue was made to order for the dashing White, but coach George Perles limited him to 19 carries, and White, who scored two touchdowns, collected only 79 yards. NUMBERS LIKE that never won a Heisman Trophy or dominated many games but White, open and candid in his pursuit of the college game's top individual award, figured he still has a chance. Purdue) gained 2,185 yards, scored 17 touchdowns. Numbers like those gain attention, and when this season began, much the same was expected of White. The Spartans even brought out their publicity drums and gave White a loud roll.

It was a mistake. They placed too heavy a burden on White. Already he was a marked man, and the Heisman hype brought him into sharper focus of MSU rivals. They set up to stop him, and essentially, they did. Before his injury, White had run the ball 110 times and netted 441 yards hardly the kind of numbers that are noticed outside the neighborhood.

He has four games left in this season, but no longer is he the sole weapon in the MSU attack. He's not likely to get 53 chances with the ball, or 40. But four games are enough enough get the drums rolling, an begin another dream, for next season. "I don't count myself out of it," he said. "Next week, I'll go out there like I'm in the race the same as before I got injured." White's sprained knee still is tender, but he gave it a good test, good enough to satisfy himself and Perles.

"When I went out there (on the field) the first time," White said, "I wasn't going to think about it (the Injured knee). Then after the first play, I felt pretty comfortable." He was more comfortable on the field than the sideline. Pedes persisted In sending White into the game for one or two plays, then yanking him out. "He said he didn't want to do too much with me," White said. "I was getting frustrated going in and out, but that's what he wanted." White earned his reputation as a ground hog during the 1985 season when he was all the offense MSU had.

WHITE RETURNED to the MSU backfield after a two-week absence during which he fell out of Heisman contention if, in fact, he or anybody ever had a chance to beat out Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde. "I don't count myself out of it," White said. "Next week I'll go out (against Minnesota) like I'm in the race the same way before I was injured." Well, he wants to believe, and who could blame him? He's nifty, shifty, speedy and hardy, but more great players have lost out in the Heisman race than ever won it.

"Coach Furness told us a couple days ago he'd had a dream that somebody on our defensive line was going to get an interception," tackle Mark Nichols said after the Spartans' 37-3 romp over Purdue. Furness' sleepy fortune-telling came true in the second quarter. Purdue quarterback Doug Downing tried to loft a little toss over the middle to tailback James Medlock, but 6-foot-3 John Budde, a defensive end, reached up and picked it off and set up an MSU touchdown from the Purdue 30. "Our defensive line goes in patterns every Thursday and coach Furness throws passes at us," Budde said.

"It's unbelievable his dream came true and I was the lucky one." Best of all, his parents (dad, Ed Budde was a Spartans All-America guard In the early '60s) were in Spartan Stadium for the game for the first time this season. "It was nice to have my parents here to see it," Budde said. "Purdue threw so many screen passes, there was a good chance somebody on the defensive line might get an Interception," Nichols said. "I didn't think Purdue was that bad, I think we all had a good game on the defensive line. Budde's intercept, (Joe)Bergin had a great game (two tackles for losses)." "One reason I wanted to do well is because it's the first time my dad has seen me play In three years, so I played my heart out," said the slightly built 178-pounder. "I thought I'd get in and I worked hard all week. I figure I'm about 75 percent, physically, because I haven't been able to start weight lifting and in practice we don't hit so I've got a long way to go." Perles was pleased with the work of his back-up runners, especially Ezor, who showed some quick moves to the outside. "Don't forget, he didn't have any practice in the early fall," Perles said. No perfection: Pedes declined to downgrade Purdue have compassion for their team," he said) and he also said the Spartans' performance was less than perfect.

"We struggled some times," he said. "We had a penalty that wiped out a nice run by Ezor, but we had everybody In there then. "All we want to do is win. We looked a little sloppy at the end, but we'll sacrifice that for team morale. It was a nice homecoming old players like Dan Currle, Ed Budde and others were tickled to death, but there's still room for Improvement." No.

We wore out our reverse (Purdue did trash that one a couple of times).

But our toss plays (around ends) made the other runs go." And the stable of runners Perles was able to turn loose would have made Calumet Farms envious. "We hoped to give Lorenzo the ball 15 times (he carried 19 times)," Perles said. "We watched him closely, tried to keep him fresh. We wanted him to get used to the tackling again. He's ready again now.

And we got most of our backs in." "It's nice to have Lorenzo back in there he makes things happen," Yarema said. White's 79 yards led the way, backed up by redshirt freshman Blake Ezor, who gained 63 yards on a dozen carries late in the game. Morse picked up 45 and Craig Johnson added 38 in the free-for-all among the backs. THE SPARTANS' display certainly couldn't have turned off the two bowl scouts peering on those from the Holiday and Bluebonnet bowls. But Perles is trying to keep his players' heads on straight.

"The bowl possibilities will take care of themselves if we just win," he said. "We don't talk about It. My thoughts are on Minnesota (next Saturday night) now." Perles' message is apparently getting through. "We can't talk bowl," defensive tackle Mark Nichols said. "If we play the games one at a time, there'll be something at the end of the rainbow." Yarema agreed.

"We'll win the rest of the games," he said. "That's the way we feel. It's gut-check time for everyone at this time of year." The Boilers could muster nothing offensively as three Purdue quarterbacks (this Is Quarterback University, remember?) could net only 121 yards. In addition, the Spartans sacked the Purdue passers four times and intercepted the same number. "In football, if you're having trouble at quarterback, you're having trouble on offense," Burtnett said. "We played a lot of good football today and they had some turnovers," Perles said.
