After pulling his latest train robbery with the help of his four partners, Gant, Mike, Timothy and Katy, Harker Fleet finds himself framed and sent to prison, never having gotten his share of the loot. Once released, Hark searches for the old gang and finds Timothy and Katy married and the vs. I Ocur-winning performances in the story of Helen Keller and her dedicated teacher. Mark sets out to get his money and Katy, his girl. lirst the important stuff: "The Ghoul" from Cleveland, Mho einceed Channel 50's "Creature Features" last Saturday on a trial basis, at last count had received 198 votes to stay on the job. And 45 letter-writers didn't like him. Win or lose, The Ghoul won't be back for a while. As for his debut effort, I thought his performance incredibly wild, therefore interesting.

Any guy who rolls around the studio on skates and spells Hamtramck backward is trying to tell us something. But though The Ghoul has a brand new pair of roller skates, seasoned, debonair Sir Graves Ghastly on Channel 2 continues to hold the key, if not to the Ghoul's skates, to our hearts. Right, troops? Meanwhile, about the Dick Cavett Show. I've said it before and I'll say it again: It's simply not that great. The Emmy people apparently don't know that, but ABC-TV does.

The unwritten message that came with Cavett's Emmy was, I think, "It's not what you achieved that counts, but that you attempted to achieve anything at all." It proves that the television industry can be just as softhearted with its awards as Hollywood can be with its Oscars. WHICH MAY be all very well, but it does supply a reason for the relative grimness with which "Tonight's" Johnny Carson emceed the rest of the award ceremony. I've told you how Carson is far better in his way than Cavett is in his. But do you listen? No. In Action Line's Sound Off box last Tuesday the question was, "Should the ABC television network cancel Dick Cavett's show because of its low ratings?" The response was 81.2 percent "No;" 18.8 percent "Yes." And then our own feature page columnist, Bob Talbert, declared last Wednesday, "If ABC-TV had any real clas it would say to hell with the ratings, Dick Cavett, you're our late night man." My heart breaks.

But maybe I can still convince you that Cavett cute and erudite as he is is not where it's at, at least for commercial television. Read this portion of a letter printed in the Chicago Tribune by an unidentified NBC employe who is an ex-Cavett fan: "Given a terrific, witty guest, no one can touch Cavett. There Today's Television Programs are about five (eight?) witty guests in the world, not nearly enough to stock a late-night show for a week, let alone a year. "Given, conversely, the average semi-celebrity available as a late-night guest, some of Cavett's fire seems to go out, and he seems to drop the BQ (boredom quotient) of his guest. "Carson, on the other hand, is at his most entertaining when things start to go wrong, which is most of the time Unfortunately, I couldn't have said it better myself.

What I have said in the past is stuff like "Cavett has made the Tonight show seem shallow, to a degree. Yet Tonight is serving its purpose far more efficiently and effectively than Cavett is his. It is for Cavett to find his own unique formula." I HAVE IN the past accused Cavett of starring not in "The Dick Cavett Show" but rather "The Baiting Game." The intensity of the game depends on the guest's lack of popularity and intellectual prowess, in that order. Rather like the Lou Gordon system. The latest such example I witnessed was that incredibly vulgar display of mutual attempted character assassination by authors Gore Vidal and Norman Mailer.

It was a fascinatingly sadistic sideshow perpetrated and constantly encouraged by Cavett. Cavett openly deplores war and violence to animals. So there comes the odor of hypocrisy when the spilling of 60ul blood is encouraged as an intellectual exercise. Jack Parr was not above that sort of thing, and I admired him for it as a showman. But Cavett indulges in it as mental superiority, and it comes off as cunning meanness.

I think PBS and Cavett need each other. They could have a terrific time together, lunching on the hand that feeds them. 5:55 0 News (13) Farm Report 6:00 0 Across tht Fence French Language (B) (13) Of (B) 6:30 U-M TV (B) (in Scooby Do (13) Cartoon Capon 6:40 News 6:55 News (24) Farm Report 7:00 Bug Bunny Country Living "Perentiiols for tho Homo 0 Will the Real Jerry Lewis Sit Down?
