"I Have But One Heart." The instrumental share the intensity which both Brando and Al Pacino brought to the screen. STRANGE FRUIT rke Turner Presents the Family Vibes, United Artists: Students of soul artists like Ray Charles, James Brown and Ike and Tina Turner have always known a healthy share of the success of these giants can be directly attributed to the brilliance of their backing bands.

Today's No. 1 back-up band is Ike Turner's Family Vibes, which has it all covered. You thought Sly's Family Stone had energy? Chicago? Blood, Sweat Tears? Amateurs, amateurs. Family Vibes i SHAFT Bernard Purrlie, Prestige: Isaac Hayes can re assured he wrote a winner (if his own multi-million selling soundtrack album hasn't convinced him) in "Shaft." Any time other artists cover your hit and it sounds just as good, you've written a classic. One of the world's most driving, intense drummers, Bernard (Pretty) Purdie, lays out a "Shaft" that's mean.

The whole album is good, but "Shaft" is great. I CAN'T SEE ME WITHOUT YOU-Cnnway Twitty, Decca: Conway Twitty sells a ton of records, places high in all the polls and packs 'em in at concerts. This album is an example of what a fine country singer can be with excellent material and a craftsman's feel for it. lantic: Joe Tex has a touch of country and a dub of humor about him which makes his approach to soul music a little novel. At times he evokes James Brown with all that screaming and screeching, but when he raps-sings-raps-sings it's right and on.

Mv favorites: "I'll Never Fall In I.nve Again" and "Oh Me, Oh My, I'm a Fool for you Raby." ONE'S ON THE WAY Lor-etta Lynn, Decca: There is no more country a singer than Loretta Lynn. Unique, uncluttered, she has her own queenly niche in country music. Her latest hit, a good humored "One's on the Way" by Shcl Sliverstcin (who wrote Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named is the featured number on this album of some fine, fine Lynn. without question the funkiest, most forceful and rock-il-to-you band in the country. This album is a killer MUSIC OF MY MINI) Stevie Wonder, Tamla: I just don't know about this album.

Maybe it's because I'm still not tired of Stevie Wonder being the current prince of soul-rock music. I'm really not ready for the kid to got into a folkish, Moogish bag. Stevie played and sang all the parts, produced it, and wrote it all. DON QUIXOTE-Gnrdon I.ightfoot, Reprise: The Canadian writer-singer gets a little string help as he puis his spell over some rather average material for a writer of his calibre. FROM THE ROOTS CAME THE RAPPER Joe Tex, At Bob Talbcrt THE GODFATH ER Origl-n a 1 Soundtrack Recording, Paramount Records: Nothing was left to chance by Producer Al Ruddy in this epic film.

Every background billboard, poster, car, clothing style was carefully 1940s. Nino Rota's background musical score is right on the money, too, capturing the feel of the '40s and the power of Marlon Brando as "The Godfather" and the rest of the extraordinary cast. J. My Hang-Up Is You-Caoitol. Freddie Hart, BY CHARLES H. GOREN Opening lead: Four of spades. When it becomes necessary to put something over on the opposition, hesitation is apt to prove fatal. South reached a five diamond contract on aggressive bidding particularly in light of North's failure to keep the bidding open and, when the dummy was spread, he realized that even with favorable distribution his contra could not be made against alert defense.

His only resource was to act quickly before the enemy had time to get organized. WEST OPENED the four of spades and East played the ace which was ruffed by South with the eight of diamonds. Declarer saw at a glance that his prospects were not very bright for, even if he suc-ceeded in establishing his heart suit which would require ruffing out the opponent's king, too many of his trumps might be used up in the process. Furthermore there was STEREO HEADPHONES With Volume With Built-in Electric Condenser Microphone rg. $1595 Soul Singles 1.

You need to see Liza Minnelli to appreciate her work in the film; but, Grey stands on his own. The recording is plagued by a slight echo, which adds an un-needed hol-lowness to the alhum.

And it's the kind of record to buy after you've seen the film. SILKNT RUNNING Origi-n a 1 Soundtrack Recording, Decca: Peter Schickel, who heretofore has been famous for his P.D.Q. Bach concerts, has composed a marvelous, evocative score for Doug Trumbull's "Silent Running." The two vocal selections, "Rejoice in the Sun" and "Silent Running" are good, simple lyrics. The orchestral selections, which mix classic and contemporary Influences are filmic music which, happily, can stand on their own as compositions. SUSPENSION SPECIALS AT BOTH STORES: SOME FM HIGHLIGHTS swiftly to put the issue to a test.

A small heart was ruffed in the dummy and a club was returned. East played low and South put up the king from his hand which held the trick. Another heart was trumped by North and a small diamond led to the jack. The ace of hearts was cashed and, when East's king fell, declarer drew the remaining trumps with the ace and queen of diamonds. He ran his established hearts and cheerfully conceded two club tricks to the opposition at the end.

East missed his opportunity to upset South's plan when he permitted the latter to sneak through an early club trick. If East puts up the ace when that suit is led from the dummy, another spade return will administer a lethal punch to declarer's trump holding. Reduced to but two diamonds while the heart suit still remains to be established, South will be unable to maintain control over the proceedings and must succumb to defeat. ice Smithsonian: Center for Short-Lived Phenomena; Origins of Tooth Disease. 8:15 p.m.

Not moderalPly funny, not in-fintesimally funny, not funny at all. And that's the Truth. DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS, David Clayton-Thomas, Columbia: He's on his own, now, and, unfortunately for the record-buying public, C-T is no better than he was with Blood, Sweat Tears. He is a monochromatic singer.

His range is limited to the shouting kind of thing he did with Here, he is positively overwhelmed by his material. Jimmy Giuffre's characteristically beautiful arrangement of "Don't Let it Bring Your Down," C-T' voice sounds pinched, off-key and out-of place. On the positive side, "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" is the kind of stuff he can sing htst, and he does passably with the material. "David Clayton-Thomas" is a cleanly produced record the only sloppy work was done by David himself. Incidentally, judging from the inside photos, Mr.

Clayton-Thomas may have a future as Hoss Cartwright's stand-in on "Bonanza." There's this uncanny resemblance he has to Dan Blocker.
