The program, which will be repeated this morning at 10:45 and Saturday at 8:30 p.m., opened with Liszt's A-Major Piano Concerto, splendidly played by Andre Watts. He brought power, tenderness and bravura to the piece in equal measures, producing an excitement and authenticity that few pianists can muster in this work. The chromatic harmonic shifts were beautifully delineated and the limpid melodies carefully went for the music that lies among all those leaping chords, double thirds, glissandi and flying octaves, and he came up a winner. Next week Herbig tackles another massive work, Bruckner's Fifth Symphony.

And no doubt the answer to whether or not he is the right person for the DSO will become even clearer. Each time Detroit Symphony Orchestra music director designate Gunther Herbig conducts the orchestra there is a bit more evidence about his capabilities. Thursday night marked Herbig's third appearance with the DSO, and taking into account two things that a conductor in his initial appearances with an orchestra would naturally program works he does especially well, and that Herbig had five rather than the usual four rehearsals for this program several things about his conducting abilities become clearer. One is that he comes to scores extremely well-prepared. Another is that he has a strong ability to give logical shape to large, sprawling works.

And finally, he has a marked flair for the music of this century. The major work on Thursday's program was Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony, a highly problematic phony has problems. Here and there the music is influenced by several composers. Its wry, bitter humor recalls Mahler, its succession of seemingly disparate parts, especially in the finale, owes debts to Bruckner. But above all it bears the distinctive characteristics of its composer: gutsy rhythms, melodies constructed on wide intervals, acerbic harmonies and tongue-in-cheek dance tunes, all somehow drawn together In a distinctive way.

Herbig plowed through the lengthy work with consummate skill. He maintained the momentum in an unrelenting fashion, with sharp accents that underlined the music's recurring bitterness. But he also paid attention to the lyrical moments, drawing forth especially sweet colors from the strings. The orchestra, which has performed the work only once before, in 1974 under Jerzy Semkow, per Sun. $5.50 at Door Frl.

The work also has a strange history. It was completed in 1936, but not performed until 1961. There are conflicting stories to explain the long delay. Some say it was the oppressive political climate of the time; others say Shostakovich himself was not pleased with the work. There is probably some truth to both theories.
