Superstar rebounds to take second set in tiebreaker. Local boy upsets superstar in final set. Well, almost.

Bjorn Borg, looking anything but retired, defeated Grosse Pointe Woods' Krickstein, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, Monday night in an exhibition match at Cobo Arena. "I thought it was a great match," Borg said. "Aaron has a great future. He has everything to win and nothing to lose. He's going to do really well in the future.

He's beaten a lot of good players." Krickstein's fellow Michiganders 5,405 of them were with Borg most of the match, although the support became more equal as the match progressed. Borg, his familiar headband restraining his shoulder-length blond hair, came on strong in the tiebreaker and stopped Krickstein in the final set with some brilliant net play. "He had some good volleys," Krickstein said. "And he was in the right place at the right time." Both held service in the final set until Borg broke Krickstein in the seventh game. Krickstein then broke Borg in deuce, but Borg won the final two games and the match.

"I hadn't been playing too much since Thursday," Krickstein said. "We both missed a few shots. "There was some pressure on me. I wanted to play well. I had a lot of friends here." Krickstein won the first set, 6-3, after breaking Borg's serve in the sixth game, but Krickstein had to take Borg to deuce twice to win.

In the preliminary match, Bill Scanlon defeated Vitas Gerulaitis, 10-3, in a lackluster set. Scanlon won the first three games before Gerulaitis took the fourth. Scanlon then won five straight before Gerulaitis grabbed the 10th and 12th games. one full-fare Coach ticket ticket for free.
