now must it feel to have one man one man By GENE GUIDI Free Press Sports Writer CHICAGO Point your finger at the pitching. Blame the hitting. Or say the law of averages is catching up with them. Whatever the reason, the Tigers' dive continues. Their latest pratfall came Wednesday night at Comiskey Park, where the White Sox ripped the Tigers, 8-2.

It was Detroit's fourth straight loss the team's longest losing streak of the season. In sweeping the three-game series, the White Sox outscored the Tigers, 24-8. Chicago manager Tony LaRussa tried to be kind, saying the Sox blitz wasn't as easy as it looked. "The scores of the games were a little misleading," LaRussa said. "They're an excellent club, we just had a few things go our way." It seemed that whenever the White Sox needed a big hit, a big pitch, or a big play in the field during this series, they got it.

Alan Trammell, an All-Star in 1980, finished second behind Ripken at shortstop and is expected to be named Saturday.

Kimball, wearing a "Comeback Kid" sweatshirt, was hoisted onto the winner's pedestal by Louganis, who said affectionately: "To me, it was like Bruce won today." Upon hearing that, Kimball wiped tears from his eyes. Afterward, Kimball said: "My competition doesn't come from Greg Louganis. It comes from everyone who's entered. But it's pretty obvious that he's the man you have to beat if you're going to win the whole thing." See RICHARD PETTY, Page 6D Toledo a willing host for LPGA tourney By JACK SAYLOR Free Press Sports Writer TOLEDO Why a professional golf tournament in Toledo, a city of 400,000 about 40 miles south of Detroit? Why not Detroit? The basic answer is that Toledo found a couple of prime movers, plus a golf course willing to accommodate the tournament.

The result is the Jamie Farr-Toledo Classic at Standing in the way There is nothing whatsoever wrong with second place. Silver medals are very pretty. If second is what Bruce Kimball gets here at the trials, and again at the Games, it will be a great moment in his life, not a bad one. But he must be aware that Louganis may be the one and only human being standing between him and all-out fame. It is Louganis who has gotten the national magazine covers.

It is Louganis who once sat on Johnny Carson's couch and traded small talk with the host. Nobody remembers who ran second to Jesse Owens in the 100. Nobody knows who was second to Bruce Jenner in the decathlon. If Bruce Kimball is to become the golden boy of the diving board, he is going to have to do unto Greg Louganis what Louganis has done unto him. He's going to have to become Diana Ross and turn the other tuy into a Supreme.

"I remember us playing at Hillcrest and Atlas Valley, plus another course near Flint. Tell Detroit it should be ashamed of itself." Lauer is puzzled by the situation, too. "I would think if somebody in the LPGA marketing area would knock on the right doors We had good support at the Stroh's tournament," she said. Dearborn Country Club hosted the Lady Stroh's in 1978-79; the winners were Sandra Post and Vicki Fergon.

But the brewery dropped the tournament as it expanded its market (Stroh's purchased Schaeffer and Schlitz shortly thereafter), then began aiming its advertising budget toward stock car racing fans. But more than just a sponsor is needed. "The other problem is getting a golf course," Lauer said. "In this part of the country, members don't want to give up their course for a week. But if you get a good course and a decent purse, the players will come.

First, though, you have to have somebody to have a interest in golf." See LPGA, Page 7D pioneer Marlene Bauer Hagge said Wednesday before the pro-am portion of the tournament.
