I closer. Aurelio Lopez, who's 10-0 with a 2.65 earned run average, is the backup. Toronto's bullpen was weak last season, too, so the team pursued free agent Goose Gossage during the off-season, then traded for Seattle left-hander Bryan Clark. When Gossage went with San Diego, the Jays signed former White Sox right-hander Dennis Lamp, who has nine saves in 51 games. Lamp led the staff in saves, with eight, early in the season but had none for six weeks after May 23.

So manager Bobby Cox decided to use Jackson as the short man. Two weeks later, Cox shifted to Jim Gott, who had been a starter. Jackson didn't do badly, but his arm wouldn't bounce back quickly enough to work several games in a short period. Gott pitched poorly the first time out DUt earned his first save the next time. He has two now.

By late July, Jackson was the only the reliever with a save in the previous two months. 80 62 .563 3-7 44-29 36-33 San Diego 5-5 38-30 34-40 72 70 .507 8 Houston 3-7 33-38 36-33 69 71 .493 10 Atlanta 3-7 35-38 31-38 66 76 .465 14 Los Angeles declined an offer from the Philadelphia Phillies during spring training that Would have sent Willie Hernandez to the Jays for outfielder Jesse Barfield. Gillick says he didn't come close to making the deal. "We had good reports on Hernandez," Gillick said. "But not for Barfield.

If it had been some- body else, we might have done it." So Tigers general manager Bill Lajoie, who had coveted Hernandez for three years, put together the John Wockenfuss-Glenn Wilson package and received Hernandez and Dave 6-4 33-35 27-47 60 82 .423 20 Cincinnati 5-5 28-43 30-39 San Francisco 58 82 .414 21 Roy Lee Jackson Tiger facts Vs. New York 4, BOSTON 2: Dave Winfield tripled home the tying run in the ninth and scored on Don Baylor's two-run homer. Yankees reliever Jay Howell (8-4) worked 1 perfect innings, and Dave Righetti pitched the ninth for his 25th save.

CLEVELAND 13, Oakland 2: Mike Fischlin drove in three runs, including one during a nine-run fifth inning, to back Bert Blyleven's six-hitter. Blyleven (16-6) struck out seven and walked one. Dan Mayer's triple drove in two unearned runs in the ninth inning and ruined Blyleven's shutout. Milwaukee 10, BALTIMORE 8: A two-out, ninth-inning double by Cecil Cooper scored Robin Yount from first base with the deciding run. Yount drew a two-out walk on four pitches from Sajnmy Stewart, who had yielded a tying two-run homer to Jim Siindberg in the eighth.

Cooper connected on a 2-1 pitch from Tippy Martinez, the fifth Baltimore pitcher. 'California 16, CHICAGO 8: Fred Lynn doubled, singled and Bergman. The value of that trade and the Blue Jays' lack of a reliable reliever were evident again Friday night in the Tigers' 7-4 victory over Toronto. Hernandez (9-2) got the win with three shutout innings in relief. A Toronto reliever, Ron Musselman, gave up Dave Bergman's three-run homer in the 10th and took the loss.

Earlier, Jays reliever Roy Lee Jackson failed to protect starter Doyle Alexander's 4-3 lead when he walked in a run to tie the score in the eighth. The Jays and the Tigers are evenly matched through much of their lineups. The Jays, with four top starting pitchers, probably are more solid there. The difference is in the bullpens. Hernandez is having one of the best years any reliever ever had.

He's being touted for the most valuable player and Cy Young awards. Detroit manager Sparky Anderson shudders when asked where the Tigers would be without him. Consider the statistics: Hernandez has not blown a save situation. His 28 saves this season are one more than he accumulated in his previous seven years in the majors. The Jays, as a team, have 29 saves.

The Tigers' bullpen has only six losses. Bergman, idled for six games with a bad back, reappeared to hit the game-winner a three-run homer in the top of the 10th. It was Bergman's fourth hit of the game only the second time in his career he has had a four-hit performance.

Lemon, out since a fly ball hit him in the face in Anaheim almost two weeks ago, returned to collect two hits and draw a bases-loaded walk to tie the score in the eighth inning. And Brookens, playing in his first game since coming off the 15-day disabled list with a hamstring pull earlier in the week, scored what proved to be the game-winning run on Bergman's blast. "Man, I wouldn't have missed this game for the world," said Lemon as he peeled off his uniform in the raucous Tiger clubhouse. "Nobody can beat us when got everybody out there playing together like we did tonight." EVEN WITH THE TIGERS at full strength, it looked as though Blue Jays starter Doyle Alexander would throw a complete-game shutout. Alexander was cruising along with a 4-0 lead in the eighth before Detroit put on two men on with two out.

"Even then, I looked down to their bullpen and I saw two guys warming up, and I said to Chester (Lemon) that they were just waiting for us to come and get them," Gibson said. THURSDAY'S RESULTS Chicago 4, MONTREAL 1. ST. LOUIS 6, Philadelphia 5. Houston 14, SAN FRAN.

Gooden, a hard-throwing right-hander, broke Alexander's 73-year-old record by striking out his fourth batter of the game, and 228th of the season, in the second inning when he got Ron Cey on a 3-2 pitch. Gooden (15-8) finished with 1 1 strikeouts and 235 for the season as the Mets defeated Chicago, 10-0. The victory cut the Cubs' lead in the NL East to six games. Gooden allowed only one hit, an infield single to Keith Moreland, for his second shutout. Alexander set the NL mark in 1 9 1 1 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The major league record, well within striking distance for Gooden, is 245, set in 1955 by Herb Score of the Cleveland Indians. Smith.

The '67 Tigers looked primed for a pennant run and came up the length of Al Kaline's finger short. On June 27, the Tigers were in first place and Kaline was leading the league in hitting. But after striking out against Cleveland's Sam McDowell, Kaline slammed his bat into the rack and broke his finger. "Of all the dumb things I've ever done, this has got to be the dumbest," Kaline said. The Tigers also lost Gates Brown, Willie Hor-ton, Don Wert and Denny McLain to injuries, but their pitching staff kept them in the race.

They went down to the last two days of the season, back-to-back doubleheaders against the Angels, needing a sweep to guarantee a pennant. Instead, they split, and finished a game behind Boston, tied with the Twins. It was the Tigers' best finish since 1945.
