You had to be sharp to win on the original "Jeopardy." On the new "Jeopardy," you merely have to possess a quick finger on the buzzer.

The host is Alex Trebek, one of the generation of game show host clones who popped into view during the 1970s. He used to host "High Rollers," which should have been a tip-off that the new "Jeopardy" would be a joke. Even legendary announcer Don Pardo is missing. Of course, they couldn't totally demolish "Jeopardy." The brainless, shrieking Bozos who usually serve as contestants on many game shows just don't fit the "Jeopardy" format. But the three bland ciphers who competed for money and prizes on Monday's premiere sure didn't sparkle with anything resembling quality gray matter.

Then again, the questions and answers were almost exclusively simple and simple-minded. And that is the most annoying aspect of the new "Jeopardy." There's nothing special about the knowledge required. There's no challenge. Science, literature, philosophy? Who needs 'em? If you watch a lot of TV and read People magazine, you're set. What a bore.

In fact, "Jeopardy" resembles a remedial version of Trivial Pursuit. Monday night, if you were at all familiar with: Plymouth Rock, Mr. Wizard, "The Twilight Zone" or Van Halen, you might have won some bucks. This is during Double Jeopardy, mind you. A category called Four Letter Words included such toughies as: Little girls do it with a rope, Van Halen does it with a song (jump), and Serling's Twilight and a basketball defense (zone).

Aaaaargh. The show is a pitiful echo of its former self. Whereas the old "Jeopardy" rewarded intelligence, the new "Jeopardy" merely insults it. TOO CUTE: "The Secret World of the Very Young," a CBS special scheduled for 8 tonight (Channel 2, in Detroit), wants so very much to be warm and cuddly and earnest and human. And about half the time, it is.

The show, with John Ritter playing host, looks into the world of the pre-schooler. The most natural moments occur when pre-schoolers themselves are shown talking about various topics, such as divorce and pregnancy and scary monsters. But the other segments, sprinkled with comments from various child experts, are a bit much. Prime example: Dr. Sahli A.

Cavallaro, a developmental psychologist, who tells Ritter, "The only way we can find out what (children are) really asking is to dialogue with them." Right, doc. You dialogue. But I prefer to talk with my kids. ETC: IT-TV (Channel 31, WIHT), the pay-TV service based in Ann Arbor, has cut a deal to add six to eight sports events a month from the Pro-Am Sports System (PASS) beginning in November Home Box Office is making waves with its generally top-notch series of "America Undercover" documentaries. The latest, "The Nightmare of Cocaine," is a fascinating, disturbing exploration of the coke generation "His Mistress," scheduled to air this fall, is an NBC movie about "a beautiful young businesswoman whose career takes off after she becomes involved with the married president of her company." Gee, that sounds vaguely familiar.
