Yates' pacing is pleasantly tantalizing. He keeps an ongo-i Interest in the absurd caper by disclosing things to the audience a little ft a time. And no sooner does one think everything's all right, than yet another obstacle is placed In the way of Dortmunder's gang of misfits.

Indeed, this Is what gives "The Hot Rock" a true cartoon-like quality. Dortmunder and gang go after their heist with all the aplomb and energy of Wiley Coyote chasing perfect on a big-time Jewel heist The friends, Ron Leibman and Paul Sand, are, respectively, a frustrated racing-car driver (from Brooklyn, yet) and an Ivy League type who carries a bag full of bombs. Having assembled his gang, Redford proceeds to plan his heist the theft of an immense gem from the Brooklyn Museum, which he will sell to one Dr. Amusa, (Moses Gunn), a United Nations delegate who claims that the stone belongs to his nation. Mm SUCHgOOD FRIENDS REGULAR DINNER MENU AVAILABLE Banquet Facilities up to 1000 BY JOHN WEISMAN Pre Press Staff Writer One of the marvelous things about Peter Yates' "The Hot Rock" is that it is a fast' paced, thoroughly entertaining, thrill-a-minute cops and robbers film in which no one gets hurt. What Yates has done, and quite marvelously, too, is to totally fuspend our disbelief, while he creates four anti-heroes whose exploits are so outrageous, so snafu'd, and so ill-conceived, that the solemnity which they approach the act of robbery is hilarious to the point of farce. Take John Archibald Dort-munder (Robert Redford). He's a heister par excellence, we're told. And yet, Dortmun-der has just served yet another jail-term.

He just keeps getting caught. Or look at Andrew Kelp (George Segal). Kelp Is, pure and simple, a klutz who hap-peni to be Dortmunder's brother-in-law. He steals doctor's cars (they're always in good shape) and has a couple of friends who would be just NOW THRU TONY 11111 "-ii' CONCERT wXSANDLERYOUNG- ANI OTTO PREAAINGER, fILAA Starring DWN G4NNON 14MES COCO JENNIFER O'NEILL KEN HOW4RO NINKFOCH L4URENCE LUCWNBIU. end LOUISE L4SSER as Marcy BURGESS MEREDITH as Kalman end O.C.SMITH SINGING "SUDDENLY, IT'S AW.
