Let us look to the future and the promise of better hopei and greater achievements.

And what might the new year bring? Ah, beloved lip-mover: Treasures undreamed of. Perhaps, in the new set of months ahead, television's top traveler, George Pierrot, will complete that sentence he started at a Christmas cocktail party last year and never completed because he was in- terrupted by autograph seekers. "I feel sorry for Bill Kennedy," Pierrot had begun with a glint in his hooded eyes. It was maddening that fame forced him to leave the statement unfinished. Then, too, the new year may bring more of those three-word editorials quickly and unobstrusively slipped into the weather news by Sonny Eliot.

"It's about five degrees warmer in the city than in the suburbs," Eliot said without a break in his usual giddily galloping style. "Move back, uh?" he suggested. The future may reveal that Eliot Is a high ranking secret agent for Detroit Renaissance. (It's a tough, lonely job, but somebody's got to do it). AND WHAT WILL the coming days weeks, hours, minutes and what-have-you bring to Warren Pierce, who has surfaced again some six months after leaving WCAR soon after it moved from middle-of-the-road to top 40? As reported last week; Pierce will be sharing emcee duties with Bob Allison in a WWJ-TV variety show to be taped Monday night at the Roostertail.

Pierce said that between last July and now, he investigated broadcasting Job possibilities In San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Toronto. Some of the opportunities looked pretty good. But Pierce Is a hometown boy, he says, and he's not anxious to be otherwise. And will the new year prove that WDRQ-FM manager Don Barrett meant it when he said last week that lack of co-oper-a 1 1 from other stations means there'll be no mors documentaries on local radio by WDRQ? When the all news and talk station went on the air last June, It featured a six-hour program on the history of Detroit radio. It featured interviews with past and present Detroit broadcasters and critics. Then, to mark its sixth month on the air, WDRQ put together a three-hour documentary with the same format, dealing with developments in Detroit radio in tha past half year. It was a fascinating show. Fascinating, at least to those fascinated by radio.

And at the same time, It made me ashamed that, as a broadcast observer, I have not paid more attention to radio. Dave Christopher, a 21-year-old native Detroiter on the staff, put together the show. The transitions and editing were excellent, for the most part. Included were frank comments on the state of radio and its changes by broadcasters in strong competition with each other. THE SHOW revealed romance and drama and an honesty in Detroit radio that I simply had not recognized before.

Barrett said, however, that two station managements who were asked to participate with interviews refused. Officials of WKNR, after giving taped Interviews, withdrew permission to use them some 48 hours be-' fore air time, reportedly because of legal advice. WXYZ management, Barrett said, refused to participate on the basis of not wanting to enhance another station. IF YOU TURN THE UPSIDE DOWN YOU WONT FIND A FINER WINETHAN jy Milan Wineries, Detroit.
