Letters To Editor To the Editor, The Winston-Salem Journal of Oct. 17 carried a full page ad by the paper. A large picture of a young girl with very sad look after she had been caught shoplifting. The title, "Where Shoplifting Stops Being Fun." These warnings followed: 1. If you think about it you had better think again.

2. It is easy to get caught. 3. Think how it feels to get caught. 4.

How could you apply for a job. Have you been arrested? 5. How do the people you know and how do you feel? You can never be the same person again. Think about it. That was a plain, simple but excellent warning.

I have 1 been asking what can we as law abiding, intelligent, Christian citizens do to keep our youth from starting on the downward road of life? I can't believe that anyone ever started out to be an alcoholic, a jail-bird, a prostitute, or a criminal of any type. Let's look at what the youth of today see and hear, and too often it is in their own home. They are born in it and taught many of these things from the cradle up. Yes, they live with alcoholics, thieves, liars, see the strange goings and comings of the prostitutes. In many of the better homes the children are left with any kind of babysitters where they see and hear most anything.

Remember the children are helpless. What can we do to help them? I think our churches and schools have the greatest responsibility and the greatest opportunity. We need real, dedicated leaders in both. Their example has a far greater influence than their words. Their word should be as good as their hand and their moral character above suspicion.

Once a congregation criticized the pastor for going fishing so often with a rough sinner. The officers sought to warn him. The preacher said, "Yes, I go often with him and I will probably go lots more." A few Sundays later the sinner came to church with his Christian wife. The preacher, through his show of interest, had led him to Christ. We must find ways to win our youth from the wrong road.

Habits are easy to form but hard to break. They make the reputation and record of any person. Court records are kept. They may be kept out of the newspapers but if anyone applies for an important position, all records will be checked very carefully. That is especially true if one enters politics.

We see that plainly in the present mud flinging campaign. Some charges may be false or a little truth greatly inflated. Youth keep your records clean. You will have to face them. Della Arnold Scott, 68, Succumbs TAYLORSVILLE Ernest William Scott, 68, NC 90 east, Taylorsville, died today at 3 a.m.

SHIP SALVAGED WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) Four years after the ferry Wahine sank in Wellington Harbor with 51 dead, divers are still clearing the submerged wreck from the shipping channel. State University Answers Timely Gardening Questions Q- What ist the proper way to take care of strawberries year around? (Mrs. J. Raleigh) A Two booklets available from the N. C. Agricultural Extension Service will answer your strawberry questions from A to Z.

The first booklet, Strawberry Production," is for large growers who cultivate strawberries as a cash crop. The other booklet, "Berries for the Garden," is for the home or hobby gardener. State University, Raleigh, N. C. 27607. (Joe Brooks, extension horticulturist) A How can I keep apples, especially Golden Delicious, from shriveling when I buy them? (Mrs. J.

Gastonia) A Put them in a bread wrapper or other type of plastic bag, along with a wet napkin, and place them in the hydrator your refrigerator. (Mel Kolbe, extension horticulturist) Q- I see dozens of balls hanging on my cedar tree. The tree is fairly healthy, but something has made these balls out of silk and needles. What are they? (R. Bolton) A Bagworms.

They attach bags (balls) to twigs of trees mostly evergreens, in early fall. Later the insects mature, become adults, mate, and lay eggs. The eggs overwinter in the bags. So, you are now growing next year's crop of worms. If you only have a few bags, cut them off and destroy them.

If you have a lot of bags, watch for the caterpillars to emerge about next June and spray or dust them with diazinon, malathion or dimethoate (Cygon or DeFend). Two treatments a week apart will be needed. (H. E.Scott, extension entomologist) What is a good location for fruit trees? (M. Wilkesboro) A Frost is generally less of a problem for fruits and berries at higher elevations.

Cold air, which is heavier than warm air, tends to drain away from the higher areas.
