6-3. Henri Leconte det. Guy f-oroet, 6-4, 6' 4. 6-4. Even before the Tigers left on their West Coast swing, Dave Bergman expected results from a newfound groove.

But it wasn't until Monday night in. Seattle, when Bergman ripped a line-drive single off the right field wall and doubled down the left field line in two at-bats, that he began to see dividends. Then Thursday night against Oakland, in his first start since Monday, Bergman homered into the upper deck in right in the fifth inning, his third of the year. When you don't play regularly it's difficult to maintain a groove, "but that's mostly mental," Bergman said. "I've been doing this for eight years.

I just keep telling myself to be as positive as possible." Moving in on Kaiine: Darrell Evans drew two walks in four at-bats Thursday night, giving him 1 ,275 career walks. With three more he will pass Al Kaiine on the all-time list and be in 19th place. But Thursday night's walk leader was Lou Whi-taker. A's pitchers walked Whitaker four times in six plate appearances, including one time intentionally. Take your seat cushions: If you want to get the most from your ticket dollar, catch an A's-Tigers game.

Thursday night's game lasted 3:47, bringing the average time of games this year between Detroit and Oakland to 3:08. Gary Santattiello Terrible Tigers: Sparky Anderson says he used to be able to tell in spring training whether he had a good defensive club. But the Tigers, who lead the league with 1 24 errors, fooled him this season. "That's something I learned this year," Anderson said. "After 32 years in the business, there isn't even an answer to that.

This might be the worst one (defensive club) I've ever managed. "Don't tell me it's a lack of concentration. Don't tell me you're struggling at the plate. Don't tell me it's a lack of preparation. Just tell me you're terrible." Fold up the cots: Perhaps the Tigers are doing too much napping on the field and in the clubhouse.

Before Thursday night's game, Anderson gave his players a 40-minute lecture on their responsibilities. Jav Berger det. Eduardo Benooe 5:00 p.m. (SQdXBaiSSeDED Wide World of Sports: Boxing, Carl (The Truth) Williams vs. Jesse Ferguson.

7 with Penn State at Maryland. The network plans to show 12 regular-season games, beginning, at noon, but no other games have been scheduled. A USA spokesman said all telecasts probably will feature non-conference games. USA also will televise five bowl games, including the Cherry Bowl from the Silverdome on Dec. 21-.

Channel 62 Program director Joe Spencer said his station has been negotiating with the Southwest Athletic Conference, which includes Grambling and other black colleges in the South. No firm plans have been made. PASS John Fetzer's pay-cable station has a schedule of about 50 games, including four or five U-M games and four or five MSU games to be shown on tape-delay on-Sunday afternoons. Wolverines games include those against Maryland, Wisconsin, Indiana and Purdue. Spartans games include those against Western Michigan, Illinois, Northwestern and, possibly, Minnesota.

The Michigan-Michigan State game might appear on PASS on tape-delay if CBS and TBS Sports turn it down. Some of the Wolverines or Spartans games also might be taken off PASS and put on live on CBS or Channel 50. PASS also will carry 11 Mid-American Conference games on tape-delay, on Monday nights in most cases. There also will be 1 1 Florida games on tape-delay on Sunday afternoons and a 19-game package of Big Eight and Southwest Conference games, some of them live on Saturdays, some of them on tape-delay on Sundays and Mondays. lar conference or region, but he added that Oklahoma might be on four times.

1 A rating point equals one percent of American homes with television. WTBS Ted Turner's cable station will present a wide variety of games on Saturdays, beginning with Florida State at Tulane this afternoon and Oregon at Washington State tonight. The early-afternoon package will appear only on WTBS in this area and will feature games from the Southeastern Conference as well as independent schools. Games to be seen depend on selection by ABC and ESPN among the CFA schools. The WTBS evening packages, involving Big Ten, Pac-10 and ACC schools, will be shared with Channel 50.

ESPN The cable sports network begins its Saturday night prime-time schedule tonight with Purdue at Pittsburgh. Because ESPN is showing CFA games, it must wait to see which games ABC chooses before filling out most of its 17-game schedule. The Sept. 7 telecast will feature UCLA at Brigham Young. ESPN also will show a five-game Thursday night package featuring smaller NCAA schools, beginning SPORTS ON THE AIR, from Page 1D games every Saturday.

The afternoon game, involving Big Ten teams, will be exclusive locally on Channel 50. The evening games, involving mostly Big Ten, Pac-10 and Atlantic Coast Conference teams, will be shared with WTBS cable. Tonight Channel 50 will show Oregon at Washington State. The station's first afternoon game will be Sept. 14, Arizona State at Michigan State.

CBS This year, CBS (Channel 2 in Detroit) has added the Atlantic Coast Conference and some independent schools to its previous deals with the Big Ten and the Pac-1 0. Most Saturdays, one afternoon game will air, such as the Notre Dame-Michigan game Sept. 14. There will be one doubleheader, Oct. 19.

CBS also has purchased rights to some independent games, including Army-Navy on Dec. 7. One Friday game will be televised, Virginia at Maryland Nov. 29, the day after Thanksgiving. CBS will select some of its games 12 days in advance, as will ABC.

The Turner packages (airing in Detroit on Channel 50) will get in line for second choice on Big Ten games. ABC The network that used to hold a monopoly on college football will show games of the College Football Association, a group of big-time football schools. ABC's first game of the season is Monday, Alabama at Georgia at 8 p.m. (Channel 7 in Detroit). The rest of ABC's games will be on Saturday afternoons for 14 consecutive weeks, with pre-game shows at 3 p.m.
