History shows that the Colts have reacted very favorably to adversity in the past. Like in 19G5: Remember? Baltimore lost quarterbacks Johnny Unltas and Gary Cuozzo in back-to-back weeks, but running back Tom Matte, the plays neatly taped to his wrist, took the Colts to a Western Conference playoff where they lost in overtime to Green Bay on Don Chandler's (was it good or wasn't it?) field goal.

AND LIKE in 1968: Remember? Once again, Johnny U. is wiped out and this time Earl Morrall stepped in to sub in such, fashion he became the league's most valuable player as he took the Colts all the way to the Super Bowl where they bowed to Joe Guarantee Namath. Now, they regroup again with Bubba out for the year after a run-in with an aluminum first-down stake. Bill Newsome shifts from tackle to end (where he's better anyway) and Jim Bailey takes over at tackle, "We won't really have a great dropoff in total defense," said Jerry Logan, the Colts' star safetyman. "But the thing you lose is just Bubba's presence.

"All he tias to do is go out there and line up and he's such a factor that the coach and the entire opposition are thinking about him. He's a very inspirational figure." "He's missed," a Colt spokesman said sadly in a colossal piece of understatement. THE COLTS claimed defensive end Richard Amman and linebacker Dennis Coleman on waivers Wednesday. Amman, a former Florida State University player, was claimed from Dallas, while Coleman, from Mississippi, was claimed from the Miami Dolphins. Amman, 6-5 and 234 pounds, is a first-year man and had been a 10th round draft choice of the Cowboys.

Coleman is a second-year man. He was a sixth round choice of the Dolphins in the 1971 draft. BIG BUBBA is the greatest loss in a string of injuries which have plagued the Colts. Logan has a leg bruise and is doubtful for the Lions. So is Don Nottingham, the bowling ball with legs one of which has a springed knee attached at the moment.

Rex Kern, who owns a starting cor-nerback spot, is being held out until the regular season with a cracked bone in his back. Despite the injuries and some hazard early-season play while the Colts experimented with Karl Douglas at quarterback, they've managed -22 record. After losses to Washington and Oakland, in which they managed a total of only three points, the Colts bounced back to down Kansas City (23-17) and PART OF THE resurgence has been due to the acquisition of Marty Domres, the Ivy Leaguer who was mired in John Hadl's shadow at San Diego. He's the latest heir-apparent at quarterback if Johnny U. ever really retires.

The 39-year-old Unitas will start against the Lions with Matte and Norm Bulaich at the running ends. Domres probably will work the second half. Ex-Lion Tom Nowatzke, still struggling to find a roster spot but always coming through when called on, will see service, too, with Nottingham questionable. 3 Linemen Cut by Lions Three linemen were released by the Lions and another placed on the injured waiver list Wednesday as the club roster was reduced to its required 49-man limit. The injured player is guard Frank Gallagher, who damaged a knee last week's game against the Washington Redskins.

He will miss the Lions' final two exhibition games, but is expected to be ready for the season opener Sept. 1 7. The released players were Dan Pop-plewell, a free agent center from Colorado; Brownie Wheless, seventh-round draft choice and offensive tackle from Rice, and Bob Waldon, llth-round pick and defensive tackle from Tulane. The only major upset in the first of 12 days of play was the marathon 6-1, 3-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 decision by Tom Gorman of Seattle over 15th-seeded Jim Connors of Los Angeles. That match, which followed Smith's struggle with the 15-year-old Martin in the stadium at the West Side Tennis club, lasted so long that the scheduled final match of the day had to be delayed until Thursday. The Dolphins also announced they had signed veteran wide receiver Karl Noonan and defensive end Bob Heinz, who are on the injured waivers list, and that offensive guard Bob Kuechen-berg had agreed to contract terms. The announcement that Kiner had been placed! on waivers came after he told the Knoxville News-Sentinel in a telephone interview that: "I'm off drugs, completely; I've had my hair cut about like it was in college and I've changed my way of life." Kiner's refusal to conform to team standards was a major reason for the Dallas Cowboys trading him to the New England Patriots last year. He got in trouble with the Patriots management and was traded to Miami, where he was trying to win a spot on the Dolphins squad. iTiitirrtitm against Haroon Rahim of Pakistan," a former U.S.
