The victory also was a milestone for head coach Earl Moore, who beat Northern coach John Dean for the first time in four tries. "I'm overwhelmed," Moore said. "The team did a good job preparing for this game and I'm very proud of them. We showed what we are capable of doing." The Tigers have hired Hiller, 42, as a minor league pitching coach. He will go to the instructional league in Florida on Sept. 15, he said, "to get reacquainted with the game and get to know some of the guys." I had a good relationship with them." Hiller said he's been through a lot and thinks it will help in dealing with young players in a high-pressure profession. Thomas was traded the following year to the Cleveland Indians "for reasons I still don't understand to this day." And he has resumed doing what he does best hitting baseballs into the seats. Going into Saturday night's game against the Tigers at Tiger Stadium, Thomas had hit 28 homers in 1985, putting him seven behind Carlton Fisk's league-leading total of 35. Thomas has 248 homers in 11 big-league seasons. "IT WOULD MEAN A LOT to me to win the home run title, Thomas said. "When you're a .229 career hitter like I am, you know you won't be winning any batting titles, so you might as well shoot for something that's attainable." If Thomas does catch Fisk, it would be his third home run title; he hit 45 in 1979 and tied for the top spot with Reggie Jackson when he hit 39 in 1982.
