6D DETROIT FREE PRESSTUESDAY, SEPT. 17, 1985 obituaries White might miss a game Cootie Williams, trumpeter in Duke Ellington Orchestra Free Press Wire Reports DALLAS Dallas Cowboys quarterback Danny White suffered a sprained right thumb and wrist Sunday in a 26-21 loss to the Lions. Team doctors said X-rays of White's thumb Monday revealed no fracture, but he probably will miss next Sunday's game against Cleveland. White left the game with the Cowboys trailing 26-0. Replacement Gary Hogeboom threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score.

"Danny may practice Wednesday, but doctors will just have to wait and see how he is looking," said Cowboys spokesman Doug Todd. "Danny is listed as questionable right now." White, who suffered two interceptions against the Lions and fumbled another time when an offensive lineman stepped on his foot, missed most of the pre-season with separated rib cartilage. He wears a flak jacket to protect that injury. "Usually a sprained thumb heals fast," White said. "I think it will be OK." WHITE SAID he suffered the injury in the first half when he hit a Detroit player in the chest with his follow-through on a pass.

"By the third quarter it was really hurting," White said. Dallas coach Tom Landry wasn't contemplating changing quarterbacks because of the way the Cowboys lost to Detroit. He said White was his No. 1 quarterback unless injury or a dramatic drop in performance made a change necessary. "Danny was trying to make something happen," Landry said.

"He didn't have much of a chance. When you try to get the offense going, sometimes you are going to make mistakes. I don't think I'm going to have to make any changes if I know this team." Dallas Cowboys quarterback Danny White has a sprained right thumb and wrist. NEW YORK (AP) Cootie Williams, a trumpeter known internationally for his growling, muted horn, has died at the age of 77. Williams, the last surviving member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra of the 1920s, died Sunday of a kidney ailment in Long Island Jewish Hospital.

He had retired two years ago because of illness. He joined the Ellington Orchestra in 1928 when it was playing at Harlem's Cotton Club. For him, Ellington wrote "Concerto for Cootie," which, when lyrics were added, became, "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me." Williams also was featured in the Ellington composition "Echoes of Harlem," and the religious piece, "The Shepherd Who Watches Over the Night Flock." In 1940, Williams left Ellington's group for the Benny Goodman orches Bucs pick up ex-Cowboy Springs NFL notebook tra. A year later he formed his own big band, whose pianists included Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. Williams and Monk co-wrote the jazz standard, "Round Midnight." Williams formed a small group in 1948.

Williams, who was born Charles Williams in Alabama and in later years lived in Queens, is survived by his wife, Catherine Williams, and a brother, Barney Leroy Williams. Turner's ankles were sprained in the 49ers' opener at Minnesota, and he re-sprained his right ankle in the first half of Sunday's game with Atlanta.

The Atlanta Falcons have lost two starting defensive backs. Safety Kenny Johnson will be out at least 10 weeks because of a broken shoulder blade and cornerback James Britt will miss the rest of the season because of fractures to two bones in his right leg. Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon and halfback Walter Payton, who didn't finish their game against New England because of injuries, will play Thursday night at Minnesota. McMahon spent Sunday night in traction at Lake Forest (111.) Hospital after suffering a back injury. He threw for one touchdown against the Patriots and set up another before leaving.

Payton had bruised ribs. Cards lose two more: The St. Louis Cardinals have paid a high price for their 2-0 record in the NFC East. In their 41-27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, starting cornerback Lionel Washington suffered a broken ankle and starting outside linebacker Thomas Howard suffered a knee injury. Cardinals coach Jim Hanifan said the players would probably miss eight weeks apiece.

In the Cards' opener, cornerback Jeff Griffin and safety Bobby Johnson suffered knee injuries that will sideline them at least six more weeks. Free Press Wire Services TAMPA, Fla. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday signed running back Ron Springs, released this month after six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. Coach Leeman Bennett said that Springs, 29, would back up James Wilder in the Bucs' one-back offense, but that he might try Springs and Wilder in a two-back attack. "Not only has Ron Springs been a good football' player and I'm assuming he still is he's played on a winning team for a number of years," Bennett said.

"I hope he can give some of our young players direction." Springs, known as much for his receiving as his running with Dallas, rushed for 2,180 yards and 28 touchdowns for the Cowboys from 1979 to 1984. He caught 222 passes for 2,029 yards and 10 touchdowns. But last week he was convicted for resisting arrest at a topless Dallas nightclub. He received a year's probation, was fined $2,000 and was ordered to pay restitution for a police officer's medical bills. Bennett had no comment on Springs' conviction.

Duper down: Miami receiver Mark Duper will be sidelined at least six weeks because of a mysterious leg fracture. Coach Don Shula said he didn't think Ellington son, Mercer, who now leads the Ellington Orchestra, said Williams "in a sense, represented one of Duper sustained the injury a hairline fracture at the top of his tibia during Sunday's 30-13 victory over Indianapolis. "We still can't figure out when he did it," Shula said. "We're going to check out the films of Friday's practice to see if there's anything there." Duper, 26, was, a Pro Bowl selection the past two seasons. During that period, he caught 122 passes for 2,309 yards.

He had four for 95 yards in the Dolphins' opener against Houston. He didn't catch a pass against the Colts. Linebacker Charles Bowser suffered a severely sprained ankle and will be out at least two weeks. Ex-Panther bites dust: The Kansas City Chiefs signed fullback E.J. Jones and waived running back Ken Lacy, a former Michigan Panther.

Jones, a rookie from Kansas, had been cut the last two years in training camp. Lacy, 24, gained 1,180 yards for the Panthers in 1983 but signed with the Chiefs in 1984 and ran for only 548 yards. He retired in 1975 from Shopping Centers the real estate arm of what is now Dayton Hudson after 23 years managing the company's eastern district. Before that, he had worked 25 years for Detroit's Department of Parks and Recreation and retired as operations director.

He was a member of Club Hiawatha, the Loyal Order of Moose and the National Rifle Association. LION NOTES: The Lions came out of Sunday's game with only one serious injury. Defensive left end Eric Williams was limping on a sprained ankle Monday. Backup nose tackle Steve Baack incurred a bruised knee but is expected to play at Indianapolis.

Rogers said he hopes cornerbacks Bobby Watkins (foot) and Bruce LIONS, from Page 1D last year's record, which Chadwick thinks was a mistake. "We've got winners here," he said. "The coaches are winners, the players are winners. I know we're winners because we won the (NFC Central) division title my first year here (1983). "If anything, last year was the Ouke.

What happened to Dallas yesterday (Sunday) is what happened to us all last year." Williams thinks the Lions' fate was sealed last year after the first five games, four of them losses by a total of 11 points. "When you win those games, it has a steamroller effect," Williams said. "When you lose, it's just the opposite. I think that was the season to some extent." Williams and Chadwick were key figures in the upset of Dallas. Williams had four tackles, two quarterback sacks and a deflected pass.

Chadwick replacing Mark Nichols in the starting lineup caught two passes, including a 21 -yard touchdown catch on which he beat Cowboys cornerback Everson Walls. "He bit on the post move," Chadwick said. "You can get a lot of separation that way. He's going one community affairs, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Nativity Episcopal Church in Birmingham.

In 1915, she married Frederick Buesser, a Detroit physician who practiced at Harper Hospital. During World War II, Mrs. Buesser was a Red Cross aide in local blood banks. COACH DARRYL ROGERS like Williams and Chadwick said he was not surprised by the Lions' strong start.

"I don't know what I expected in the first place," Rogers said. "I haven't had any great surprises. This is the way it's supposed to be; this is the way we wanted it to be. "This football team won a division championship in 1983 and, in 1984, had high expectations to be a good football team. For whatever reasons that came about, they did not have a successful season.

"It the success we've had really is a tribute to the players themselves. I would like to say the coaching was a part of it, but all the coaching in the world if you don't have good players is not going to do you any good." The victory over Dallas had none of the conventional signs of success. The offense generated only 200 yards and the defense gave up 554. "That's probably the first time I've ever praised a defense for giving up 550 yards," Rogers said, laughing. The defense came up with enough big plays, however, to offset the Cow-boys offensive gains.
