NEVER CRY WOLF: A perfect family film: excit okjioA jewelryX jewelry will be a winner. The youth-oriented film take its title from hotshot acrobatic skiers who often are the bane of recreational skiers. ON THE SKIING: "We hope to appeal to all the skiers in the country.

The skiing is really spectacular. They've captured some stunts I'd never even seen before. Feldman hired five of the world's best hot-doggers and about 30 Squaw Valley locals for the stunts. They had guys flying 35 feet in the air doing triple, full-twisting flips and landing on their skis. Fantastic.

"Before and after the stunts, the cameras cut to us actors you know, skiing in or out of frame for the close-ups. The locals had a field day yelling at us, especially when we fell down, which was often." ON THE JOB: "I've never had to work so hard as an actor. I hadn't skied in eight years, and it took me weeks to get in shape. "There was 50 feet of snow up there and sometimes we didn't get down to the village all day. They brought lunch to us on the lifts in paper bags.

They suspended shooting when there wasn't enough light, but never just because it: was too cold. Vernon Scott United Press International VOLLEYS OF FIRE: Everyone wants a piece of the L.A. Olympics pie, it seems. The latest slice being served is "Spiker," a fictionalized film on the U.S. men's volleyball team's quest for the gold.

Producer-director Roger Tilton said he has patterned the story on the award-winning "Chariots of Fire." In this case, the conflicts and triumphs bounce around the volleyball court. Tilton acknowledged that the movie is timed to come out just before the summer "to take full advantage of the opening of the 23d Olympiad." Said Tilton, "We see our film boosting interest in our nation's quest for the Olympic gold medal in volley-; ball, as well as that quest boosting interest at the box office for NOT THE LOVE BOAT: Federico Fellini's latest epic will be making its wy.across the sea sobn. It is La Nave Va" the Ship Sails and is billed as a "music-filled comedy extravaganza." However, the plot sounds anything but funny. On the eve of World War a legendary opera singer dies. Heads of state, impresarios and artists gather for a memorial cruise, in which they will scatter her ashes over the Adriatic.

War breaks out and the ship is trapped in hostile waters. GRANTED: Preserving old film is a national priority these days. A total of $355,600 has been awarded by the American Film InstituteNational Endowment for the Arts Film Preservation Program. The program is part of a national effort to acquire and preserve a broad spectrum of American films. Eight organizations (none in Detroit) have received grants to help safeguard films.

Neither survived 13 weeks. When he landed a role in his latest, "Hot Dog The Movie," he thought it might be like a paid vacation with eight weeks of skiing at Squaw Valley, Calif. Naughton was quickly disabused of the fantasy when he reported to the winter resort last year and producer Ed Feld-man laid down the law: "No skiing for cast members." ON THE MOVIE: "I love skiing," Naughton said, "and I made some of the slopes despite Feldman's warnings.

But I never worked so hard in worse conditions in my life." He hopes "Hot Dog The Movie," a sort of "Porky's" on skis, most creative when he crafted this 8 moody masterpiece of dreams and death.
