He has sharp writers, many of them alumni from the original "SNL." Even though a skit such as last week's spoof of "1984" with Steve Martin dragged on too long, it was well written and well performed. And bits such as Martin's mock-rock video of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" or Dave Thomas as Bob Hope in Beirut were first-rate by almost any comic standard. With "SCTV" having fled to the Cinemax pay cable network and "Saturday Night Live" now a pale echo of its original, fiesty self, imaginative skit comedy is definitely an endangered species on network television. Which is why I'm rooting for "The New Show" to survive. This Friday's hosts are Paul Simon and his bride, Princess Leia (a.k.a.

Carrie Fisher). And next week it's the odd couple of Gilda Radner and Kevin Kline. So get out there and giggle.
