2 DETROIT FREE PRESSTHURSDAY, JULY 12, 1979 After 7f Ii aking '3 m- one is IS ace 9 Ml II IssHx Sayloi zti II KEN STABLER might want to be traded, but he's not going cheaply. Al Davis, the Oakland Raiders' managing general partner, has given Stabler's attorney permission to arrange a trade for the star quarterback. The two sides have agreed on minimum requirements for a deal to include two first-round draft choices and two other quality players who are young and healthy. Eddie LeBaron, general manager for the Atlanta Falcons, called the price for Stabler "pretty stout." Stabler had demanded a trade after Davis criticized him after the 1978 season. But new Raiders' coach Tom Flores said he has talked to Stabler and said Stabler is uncertain if he wants to rejoin the team.

Wall) at one time. I think he had 10 or 1 1. I'm proud of it but I just wish I could play better." The shortest of Davis' aces was 152 yards, the longest 224. He made 13 of them in 1967 when he was merely 13 years old. Five came in one month, three within a week.

He once bought a sleeve of three gold balls with a number one on them and scored an ace with each of them. But there are drawbacks. "At a pro-am in Brownsville, recently, they put up a $10,000 diamond for an ace the first day and a kilo of gold the second This has been a busy summer for Mancil Davis. In addition to serving golfing members at the Trophy Club between Dallas and Ft. Worth, he is fighting a slump.

Davis hasn't had a hole-n-one gosh, it's been almost 12 months now. This is a terrible thing when you consider that Davis, who is all of 25 now, had at least one ace each year, every year, since 1966. "In calendar years, I'm still okay," said Davis, a native of Odessa, who worked as Doug Sanders' assistant in Houston and as pro at St. Simons, before returning to his native Texas this year. "I still have the rest of 79 to keep trying.

I'm getting it close, but all of a sudden I Just can't get the ball to go in. "I've had a lot of close calls. and a half, that close. It sounds silly, but I go through periods where I think I'm going to make one. I start hitting a lot of shots right at the pin.

"I holed out an 8-iron for an eagle a month ago. I have a feeling another one's going in sooner or later. I hope so, I want to catch Art Wall one of these days." Davis has a grand total of 34 holes-in-one, not to mention nine double-eagles (two on a par-five). Wall, a 55-yeair-old former PGA star, has 41 aces and nobody ever heard of anyone with more. "I can't explain it except to say luck helps," said Davis, who is in the Guiness Book of Records for his feats and has stumped the experts on "I've Got a Secret." "When I tee it up on a par-three, it's so subconscious it's scary.

But without fall, I aim at the flag. It sounds crazy but I'm trying to make holes-in-one. So I believe it's got to be mental. Obviously I've holed out more than my share. "I just have a knack for knocking the ball in the hole I've always been a very good medium and short-iron player.

But when you consider that to the best of my knowledge Ben Hogan never has had an ace, my having 34 is luck. "Jack Nlcklaus? I'm not sure, but I've heard the figure six of them for him. And Mason Rudolph was second on the tour (to day. They wouldn't let me compete for it," he laughed. And there are the bar bills.

"I paid some big ones," he admitted. "Some of them over $100. "I got some back when I was in a hole-in-one club in Dallas where everybody puts up $5. 1 made three aces in one summer and got about $2,000 in gift certificates I also got kicked out of the club." BOBBY DOUGLASS the fireballing southpaw who played quarterback for five National Football League teams, has signed a contract to pitch for the Chicago White Sox' AAA farm club in Des Moines. Douglass, 32, hasn't played organized baseball since college, but has been pitching batting practice for the Sox and Chicago Cubs recently.

Chisox vice-president Roland Hemond insisted Douglas has major league potential. "This is not a gimmick," he said. Douglas, who threw hard-some say too hard during his 10-year NFL career, said he's out to learn as much as possible. "It might take me two weeks or two months to get my control. I have a pretty good fastball, some might even say exceptional." Douglas played for Green Bay last season but was told he had no future there.

The Sox said they assured Douglas the club would not block him if he received another NFL offer. GARRY TEMPLETON is miffed over his selection as a reserve on the National League All-Star squad. So the St Louis Cardinals' shortstop says he'll pass up the trip to Seattle next week and spend the time with his family. "If I ain't startin', I ain't Templeton huffed. He was angered by the fans' pick of the Philadelphia Phillies' Larry Bowa as starting shortstop.

Templeton, who finished fourth in the voting, is batting .321. LOU MICHAELS the former Baltimore Colts place-kicker, has slapped a libel suit on TV Guide and one of its writers. -Michaels is teed-off about an article in the Guide's Jan. 14, 1978, issue that said he was "celebrated for his barroom bellgerance." Who is the only pitcher to ever it a grand slam home run in the World Series? A Dave McNally hit his slammer for the Baltimore Orioles against the Cincinnati Reds on Oct. 13, 1970, while coasting to a 9-3 win.

The home run also tied McNally with Bob Gibson for most home runs in series play by a pitcher. Each hit two. McNally's first came at the expense of Jerry Koosman and the Mets In 1969. bsts Frank Wieckowski, Warren Today's Question: Who is the only switch hitter who hit over .300 lifetime to be inducted into the Hall of Fame?
