Sparky said Petry has plenty of tools to be a star in the majors "He has the intelligence, the body, the strength and the poise Great talent is like a rosebud: When it opens, it opens extremely fast." Thompson hadn't given up on hitting home runs, but he admitted it had been a long dryspell for him. The big first baseman has been working on a batting technique to help his quickness with the hickory. "The last couple of nights, it has felt great," said Thompson. "In fact, It even felt great the night before when I struck out and grounded out." THE VICTORY wrapped up the Tigers' 1979 action against Milwaukee with the Brewers taking a 7-6 edge.

The Tigers will fly to Toronto on Friday, having completed a 4-2 homestand. Milwaukee starter Moose Haas, on a comeback from a 1978 arm injury, had won four of his previous five decisions, but the Tigers kayoed him early. Alan Trammell singled and stole second base in the third and LeFlore singled his teammate home with the Tigers' first run. LeFlore swiped second, extending his major league theft lead, and stayed there when Lou Whitaker walked. StnFranclSCt 100 020 003-4 SanDleeo 000 000 020- 2 Briggs.

It was the 20-year-old Californian's third victory in four starts since he was called up from the minors earlier this month. The seven-hit job left Petry's earned run average at a sparkling 2.16 for his four games. Petry had a rather mediocre record with Evansvllle of the American Association before manager Sparky Anderson gave him his first look at the big time, but he has performed like a veteran since then.

Petry's win over the Brewers was his second complete game. He lost his shutout in the ninth inning when Jim Wohlford bunted for a base hit and ex-Tiger Ben Oglivie hammered his 20th home run of the year against the rightfield overhang. "I wanted that shutout bad," Petry admit-ted. "I was trying to go as hard as I could to get it and besides, I didn't want to get lackadaisical out there with a five-run lead." Petry admitted he "grooved" a fastball to Oglivie on a 3-and-l count "and he just hit it. But I didn't have any choice." JASON Thompson's three-run homer, his first since July 6 and only his second in the last six weeks, was the big blow of a four-run uprising in the third.

Further excitement was provided by Ron LeFlore's 51st stolen base as the speedy centerfielder continues his quest for Ty Cobb's AL single-season record of 96. Rookie Tom Brookens capped the Tigers' scoring with a solo HR in the seventh Inning. It was Brookens second in a three-week major league career and it was the Tigers' ninth round-tripper in the three-game series against the Brewers. Anderson was effusive in his raise of Petry.
