3Jetroit 4frcc Vxcso CLASSIFIED GOLD ADS HELD OVER Lloyd, owner of a Dallas lumber yard. Walter's a patient, average, middle-American guy wood samples stashed on the dashboard, an orderly life, his only bad habits overwork and tossing empty coffee containers into the back of his station wagon. As the impatient Chris mutters, his dad warms up the car even in summer. But Walter has a hidden and complicated history, and when his wife, Donna (Gayle Hunnicutt), disappears on a trip to Paris, Walter realizes that the the man who escaped, whose name was never known has Hackman's wife. But who is he, and why has he involved the whole family? This is director Arthur Penn's 1 1th film, his first since "Missouri Breaks" almost a decade ago.

It was worth the wait. Despite a terribly stagy finale, "Target" is exciting, intelligent and entertaining enough to keep audiences on edge, and, violence or no, its messages are good ones. 5:20 7:30 9:40 11:45 5:05 7:20 9:35 10,12:15 2:30 4:45 7, 9:30 10,12:15 2:30 4:45 7, 9:30 i i ICE eh Id 5:20 7:30 9:40 5:20 7:30 9:40 11:45 10,12:15 2:30 4:45 7, 9:30 past has returned to haunt him. So, as deftly as an aging dance instructor recalling a variation on the tango, Walter steps back into the spy business. This time around, his son is a witness.

Fir 7 rVW "TARGET" IS ABOUT both revenge and perception. When father and son reach Paris, Chris begins learning another set of truths about his father: This dull daddy of his was a first-class CIA spy who is still tri-lingual, a crack pistol shot, a determined fighter, a devious and speedy plotter and can drive a fast car like a Formula One madman. Watching Hackman French Connection," "I Never Sang For My is always instructive his performances always vary. This time fans get two performances for the price of one: Hackman as Walter Lloyd, and Walter Lloyd as the creation of Duke, the CIA spook from whose imagination Walter has sprung. Walter's thoroughness is just a version of Duke's trained thoroughness; his apparently casual control is classic CIA technique modified to fit the lumber business.

And the minute Walter goes back into action as Duke, his vaguely rumpled air disappears; he looks the same, but somehow everything his eyes, his posture, his poise is different. Dillon, after a series of surly-loner parts, was charming in "The Flamingo Kid." He's good as Chris, too, this self-described underachiever who wants only to race cars and thinks of his father as a boring plodder. Dillon's Chris changes as his relationship with his father changes, difficult work to do. THE SEARCH for Donna Lloyd moves from Paris to Hamburg and back, with side trips along the way, and involves Duke's old girlfriend and colleague Lise (Victoria Fyodorova), a dying colonel, a man in a wheelchair (played with admirable malevolence by acting coach Herbert Berghof), Chris' amorous distraction (Ilona Gru-bel), and Duke's former CIA boss, Taber (Josef Sommer). The revenge, it turns out, was a long time coming.
