An abundance of football players a lot of Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears went looking for new homes Monday and Cincinnati quarterback Greg Cook prepared for a six-week vacation as the NFL reached the deadline for trimming rosters to meet the 40-player limit. Cook, who has been plagued with arm trouble after undergoing surgery last season, has been placed on the injured waivers list, which means he will be ineligible to play until Nov.

1. But the Vikings and Bears, seeking to strengthen themselves for the NFC Central Division race, made a flurry of trades. The Lions didn't get involved in the swapping but Coach Joe Schmidt delayed announcing his roster cuts until the involved players could be informed. The Vikings traded linebacker Mike McGill, defensive back Dale Hackbart and an undisclosed future draft choice to St. Louis for tight end Bob Brown and defensive back Nate Wright.

The Vikings also traded their No. 4 quarterback, Bill Cappleman, to Philadelphia for a future draft choice and signed Jim Loenz, a tight end, as a free agent and assigned him to the taxi squad. In addition, the Vikings placed tight end John Beasley on the injured reserve list and cut linebacker Jerry Hillebrand, guard Mike Lahood and defensive back Ted Provost. Beasley suffered a knee injury against Miami in the Vikings' last exhibition game Saturday night and is out for the season. The Bears got running back Cyril Pin-der from Philadelphia for two undisclosed draft choices and running back Bill Tucker from San Francisco for a 1973 draft choice, and traded center Bob Hy- opportunity to tell the involved players first.

Quotable Quotes Colt coach Don McCafferty, after a 24-3 loss to Oakland left the Super Bowl champs with a 24 record: "There's something wrong I don't see how it could be any worse. I'm open to suggestions." Cowboy coach Tom Landry, on his two-quarterback system which resulted in a 6-0 exhibition record: "I'm very satisfied with our position. It will stay as is with both (Craig) Morton and (Roger) Staubach playing. Both are getting the job done. We'll just go with whoever happens to be going best." Giant quarterback a Tarkenton, after boo-birds got on him as New York was losing its sixth straight exhibition: "I'd boo, too, if I was a fan.

Someday I'll be a fan and I'll boo. If we were 6-0, they would have been cheering." 49,000 Per Game Exhibition pro football has been cussed and discussed all summer, but the figures prove that fans are buying it for better or worse. A record 3,811,858 persons turned out for the 78-game schedule (one a double-header). This averages out to 49,505 fans a game. The total was up 315,000 for the same number of dates last season.

The Bears also said that running back Craig Baynham, who suffered torn ligaments in his right shoulder in scrim; mage, underwent surgery Monday and has been placed on the waived injured list. The San Francisco 49ers traded veteran running back Bill Tucker to the Chicago Bears for a 1973 draft choice.

The Oakland Raiders swapped second-year reserve running back Ted Koy to the Buffalo Bills for future draft choices." The New York Giants dealt their No. 1 draft choice for 1972 to the Chicago Bears for two starters center Bob Hyland and cornerback Bennie McRae. Hyland, 26, is in his fifth NFL season. McRae, 31, currently in his 10th pro season, has missed only one game in nine years and has 27 career interceptions. Mike Hull, a former No.

1 draft choice of the Bears, was one of four players cut by the Washington Redskins to get to the player limit of 40. The Packers also dropped John Bram-lett, who was the Patriots' most valuable player last season and for whom Green Bay sent starting lineup Rich Moore to New England. Schembechler wasn't totally satisfied with Casey's debut last Saturday against Northwestern. As a matter of fact, neither was Casey. "I think he is a much better quarterback than he played in that game," Schembechler said Monday. "He got his first game out of the way and that's good." THE FORMER Grand Rapids Catholic Central all-stater completed just four of 11 passes (the longest was 11 yards) for 34 yards and he had one interception.

Although Schemtiechler and Casey aren't alibing, there were some extenuating circumstances which didn't make his first Big Ten football game an easy one. For one thing, Casey had to miss the entire final game-type scrimmage the Saturday before the game because of a seriously injured shoulder. It was a well-guarded secret but he didn't call one play in what should have been his final opportunity to prepare for Northwestern. During the team's workouts last Tuesday and Wednesday, Casey was working in special linebacker gear which hindered his passing but protected his aching shoulder in the contact-drills. HIS PROBLEMS were compounded early in the game Saturday when he came up with a painful charley horse in his leg and had to be taped up tightly to complete the game.

Despite i physical ailments, Casey seemed to gain confidence in the later stages of the game. He was able to 14(0 S.Wayne Rd. 3415 Dix Rd. 21533 Ecorse Rd. After Juan retired Singer and Maury Wills, he hit Buckner and a free-for-all erupted near the mound.

Buckner went after Marichal with bat in hand but was restrained by Giants catcher Russ Gibson. With both benches crowded around the mound, someone hit Marichal while the umpires were trying to tell the Giants' pitcher he was out of the game. Buckner and Giants ace relief pitcher Jerry Johnson also were ejected. The Dodgers were ahead 3-1 at that point and Jim Barr replaced Marichal. Willie Davis, the first batter Barr faced, hit a homer to make it 5-1.

TEMPERS REMAINED aroused in the seventh inning when Wills was thrown out by second base umpire Mel Steiner. With runners on first and second and two out, Bobby Bond struck out on a low pitch which went through catcher Tom Haller for a passed ball. Haller threw wild to first for an error and Wills argued that Bonds interfered with first baseman Wes Parker. When Wills wouldn't give up, Steiner thumbed him out. 1 3.
