By BRIAN BRAGG Fre Press Sports Writer Tigers completed their fifth roster change in less than a week Sunday when they sold veteran catcher Milt May to the Chicago White Sox for an undisclosed sum. The departure of May was no surprise, since he had been used very sparingly by manager Les Moss this year.

The lefthanded-hitting receiver, now in his ninth season in the majors, had not played in a game since a pinch-hit appearance April 25. The sale of May left room on the 25-man roster for outfielder Champ Summers, who had been acquired two days earlier from the Cincinnati Reds and reported to the Tigers on Sunday. The Tigers had been exploring a trade for May, and one of the teams they had approached was the Baltimore Orioles, who wound up their weekend series in Detroit on Sunday. Baltimore manager Earl Weaver, who has two righthanded-hitting catchers on his roster, claimed the Birds made an offer for May but the Tigers rejected it. MAY WAS ACQUIRED by the Tigers after the 1 975 season in a seven-man deal that also brought pitchers Jim Crawford and Dave Roberts to Detroit.

Sent to the the Houston Astros in the deal were pitchers Mark Lemongello and Gene Pentz, catcher Terry Humphrey and outfielder Leon Roberts. May broke an ankle in the first month of the 1976 season and played only six games for the Tigers. He became the Tigers' No. 1 catcher in 1977 with the retirement of Bill Freehan and hit .249 with 12 home runs and 46 runs batted in that season. Last year.

May shared backstop duties with then-rookie Lance Parrish. May hit .250 with 10 homers and 37 runs batted in for 115 games in 1978. During the off season, Moss announced that Parrish was his chosen receiver as long as the young strongman could do the job. Parrish has done the job so far, and now Moss has decided that carrying three catchers on his roster is unnecessary. The only other catcher now on the Tigers' roster is John I.

TIGERS, from Page 1D The opener was a breeze, too, as the Tigers ran up a 5-0 lead and then sat back and watched the 36-year-old Bil-lingham hang up his second straight complete game. BILLINGHAM had the Orioles utterly baffled through seven innings of the opener as he mixed his variety of pitches beautifully. He lost his shutout in the eighth when pinch-hitter Terry Crowley a former teammate at Cin- cinnati slugged a two-out solo HR into the upper deck in right. "I haven't had a chance to talk to Terry yet," said Bil-lingham, "but when he came out to hit he kind of looked at me and I looked at him and we kind of grinned at each other. "The home run was my fault I started trying to get cute, trying to strike him out, and I threw a changeup and he just hit it out." Billingham claimed his victory wasn't as asy as it looked.

"None of 'em are easy," he said. "I did have good stuff, just like the other night against the Yankees, but they made some super plays behind me." BILLINGHAM gave particular credit to a double play started by shortstop Alan Trammell in the third inning, when the Tiger held a 1-0 lead. Trammell went far to his right to field a ball hit by Baltimore catcher Steve Skaggs, then whipped it to Lou Whitaker to start a twin killing. "That was the big play of the ball game as far as I'm concerned," said the veteran hurler. "If Trammell doesn't make that play they've got runners on first and third and none out." Billingham gave up a single in the third and Crowley's homer and another base hit in the eighth and that was all.

It was the fourth three-hitter in Billingham's career (the last was in 1973 when he was with the Reds); he has never allowed fewer hits in any of his 288 major league starts. Kemp got the Tigers started in the opener with a two-out double in the first inning, scoring on Jason Thompson's single. The muscular leftfielder SiTiade it 3-0 in the third when crashed a Scott McGregor 'pitch into the right-center-j Afield upper deck after Whi-i taker had singled. John Wockenfuss put one t'1n the leftfield chairs leading off the fourth. The Tigers tpade it 5-0 in the sixth when lOifLw 18 1ft double down the rightfield line.

THAT MARGIN was sufficient for Billingham to comfortably hang up his fifth win tops among Detroit pitchers against three losses. McGregor slipped to 0-2. It was his first-ever loss to the Tigers after four wins during the previous two seasons. McGregor has pitched just four times this season because of soreness in his left elbow, and Sunday's start was his first in a month. The nightcap began in embarrassing fashion for Kemp when he slipped and fell on the soggy turf and couldn't handle Al Bumbry's routine flyball.

Kemp was charged with a two-base error. Bumbry was sacrificed to third and scored on Eddie Murray's flyball. THE BIRDS got another unearned run off Rozema in the second when Aurelio Rodriguez made two errors on Rick Dempsey's ground ball. The Tiger third baseman initially dropped the ball, then threw wildly, and that allowed Pat Kelly to score all the way from first base. Meanwhile, though, the Tigers were backing Rozema with plenty of runs.

Kemp drilled his second homer of the day, and eighth of the season, into the upper deck of the bleachers in right-center in the first inning before the Tigers erupted for four more markers in the second. Baltimore starter Steve Stone walked Thompson and Lance Parrish and gave up a run-scoring double to Rodriguez that tied things at 2-2. Trammell drove in the go-ahead run with a ground ball. After Ron LeFlore drew a base on balls, Whitaker crashed a two-run triple to the area of the flagpole in center-field, plating two more markers. The Tigers got a tainted run in the fourth, increasing their lead to 6-2.

Parrish led off with a single and went all the way to third when Stone's pickoff throw sailed wide of first. Trammell's base hit then scored the Tiger catcher easily. THE TIGERS got another run in the seventh when Trammell singled, went to second on an infield out and scored on Whitaker's base hit. The Tigers put a cap on their productive afternoon when Trammell knocked in three more runs in the eighth against reliever Tippy Martinez. New Tiger Champ Summers started things with a two-out base hit.

Parrish followed with a single and Rodriguez walked to load the bases. Trammell then smacked a drive up the alley in right-center and off the outstretched glove of Bumbry for a three-run double. Kelly's solo home run in the ninth served only to dent Rozema's pride as the young righthander easily wrapped up the sweep. 1 KS Ujf Reg.21.99 Reg. 29.99 Reg.24.88 SAVE 3.89 SAVE $5 SAVE 7.11 REPLACEMENT PATIO DOOR SCREEN.
