But regular Washington Senator watchers say McLain has been anything but an impressive pitcher since leaving the disabled list a month ago. Denny has won four and lost three during that time, but he has been getting by mostly with breaking balls and off-speed pitches. On top of that, he and Manager Ted Williams aren't getting along any too good, either, and 's a good chance McLain will change uniforms again once the season ends. Willie Horton will return to Ford Hospital Tuesday for another examination of his left eye, but the Tigers still don't have any idea how soon their slugging outfielder will be able to play again. "It's entirely in the hands of the doctors," explained GM Jim Campbell who has accompanied the club on this road trip.

"It's not up to Willie Horton it's not up to Billy Martin it's up to the eye doctor in charge of the case." BY JIM HAWKINS Free Press Sports Writer WASHINGTON The inevitable, endless comparisons between Mickey Lolich and Vida Blue who's really better? who should win the Cy Young Award? are beginning to bother the Tiger lefthander. For one thing, The Mick doesn't really think there's any question about who is the better pitcher. On the other hand, is there really any doubt about who will be the Most Valuable Player and Cy Young recipient? "I don't want this to sound like I'm bragging or anything," Lolich began Monday after finally pulling even with Blue in victories at 23. "But look at it this way: He's 22 years old and I'm almost 31. "I can't begin to name all the hitters in this league that he can just stand out there and throw his fastball by.

Now. I can't do that. I have to pitch a little more in order to win. I don't have the great fastball and the super duper curve like he does. "Remember, too, he's pitching for a first place club that's running away with their race.

And if I can still win as many games as he does, well. At the same time Lolich is convinced Blue is going to be This is the MVP and the Cy Young winner. In fact, a headline in a Washington paper Monday that read "Martin Wasting Time Talking About Lolich Winning Young Award" failed to faze Mickey for even a moment. "It's hard to conceive of him not winning," admitted Lolich. "He's been so popular this year, he's bound to win on that -alone.

I suppose I will feel bad if I don't win anything but I just know he's going to win it all and I'm not going to let myself worry about it." Rookie catcher Tim Hosley has only a discolored eye and a cut inside his mouth to show for his home plate pileup with Bobby Murcer Sunday. Hosley, who had to be carried off the field on a stretcher, was rushed to a New York hospital where doctors decided to keep him over night for observation. But the husky rookie overruled them, walked out of the hospital and was back in the Tiger clubhouse by the time the team loft for Washington. I WAVE A PERFECT VgAg. IN PROGRESS Judging by the way Denny McLain embraced his former Tiger teammates around the batting cage Monday, you'd think the controversial right- Tijrer Farmhand Shares Honor Shortstop Tom Veryzer of Bristol, the Detroit Tigers' Appalachian League farm club, has been named co-winner of that league's rookie-of-the-year award.

NEW YORK (UP!) Ron Swoboda hit a two-run pinch single in the eighth inning and saved the opener with a spectacular ninth inning catch and Stan Bahnsen pitched a six hitter in the nightcap Sunday as the New York Yankees swept a doubleheader from the Boston Red Sox by 5-3 and 3-0 margins. Swoboda jackknifed into the stands in the ninth when he saved the first game by leaping into the air and taking a two-run homer away from Reggie Smith before he fell into the seats. Roy White of the Yanks tied a 57-year-old American League record with his 16th sacrifice fly of the season. The record was set in 1914 by Sam Crawford and Chick Gandil. The National and major league record is 19 held by Gil Hodges.

Boog's Slam, Routs Tribe BALTIMORE (UPD Steve Dunning, in relief of starter Vince Colbert, induced Frank Robinson to hit into a double play with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning to preserve a 1-0 victory for the Cleveland Indians over Baltimore in the nightcap Monday night after Boog Powell's grand-slam home run sparked the Orioles to a 10-5 victory in the opener. Colbert (5-4) and Dave Leonhard (2-1), matched zeroes through the first three innings when, after on out in the fourth, Ken Sua re doubled, lie moved to third on Lou Camilli's long fly and came home as Fred Stanley singled. Dunning replaced Colbert after singles by Ellie Hendricks and Brooks Robinson put runners at first and third with one out in the ninth. He walked Dave Johnson, loading the bases, but struck out Jerry DaVanon and got Frank Robinson to bounce into a game-ending double play. Powell's homer, his 18th, came after rookie pitcher Mark Ballinger walked the bases loaded and reliever Phil Hennigan walked Dave Johnson to force in a run.

Powell then hit a line drive into the left-field seats to give reliever Eddie Watt his third victory. Powell is struggling this season with a .237 average and 73 RBls. Cleveland had tied the game, 5-5, with a three-run eighth inning when the Indians knocked out Pat Dobson, who was seeking his 18th victory. Singles by Ted Uhlaender and Vndu Pinson, an infield error and run-scoring singles by Ray Fosse and Eddie Leon produced the three runs. ('liimtxSplil uilli Twins CHICAGO OirH Harmon Killebrew drove in four runs and hit his 507th career homer Monday in leading Minnesota to a 10-3 victory aver the Chicago White Sox in the second game of a doubleheader, after the Twins lost the opener, 6-3.

A two-run home run by Bill Melton and a threerun smash by relief pitcher Steve Kealey powered the Sox to their opening game win. Melton's homer, his 28th of t. season and first since Aug. 20, came with" two out in the first inning and followed a walk to Rich McKinney. 2-Out URs Beat A's OAKLAND (AP) Tony Gonzalez and Roger Repoz crashed successive home runs off Oakland's Chuck Dobson with two out in the top of the ninth inning Monday to catapult the California Angels to a 4-2 victory over the A's Gonzalez' blast, his third of the year, sailed over 'the leftfield wall, snapping a tie and sending Oakland's 15-game winner down to his fourth defeat.

SB C.May. SF Reese. auks Hosox () BY CURT SYLVESTER Pre Press Sports Writer Bo Schembechler returned the verdict; sophomore Kevin Casey will be Michigan's starting quarterback. The Michigan coach gave Casey and four other quarterback candidates a trial that lasted all of spring practice, the first two weeks of summer drills and a final game-type scrimmage. When he finajly listed his No.

1 unit Monday morning to begin preparations for Satur-day's Big Ten and season opener at Northwestern, Casey got the job. SOPHOMORE Tom Slade and junior Larry Cipa, who sat out last year with a knee injury, were listed in the backup spots. Casey, a former All-Stater from Grand Rapids Catholic Central, does not have the physical characterisitcs Don Moorhead, the All-Big Ten quarterback he is replacing. Casey stands 6-foot-2 and weighs only 175 pounds but that hasn't dampened Schem-bechler's enthusiasm about his ability. "He's a nifty ballplayer," was the way Schembechler described him when summer workouts began.

"He's a good passer and he can do all the things we ask of our quarterback." And just because Casey doesn't have Moorhead's size and strength, don't expect the Wolverines to make any great changes from the play-action type game they have utilized for the last two seasons. "If we had a quarterback we didn't think could run, we'd have to go to the drop back and change our material," Schembechler said. "But we're not changing." At the same time, however, lie made it clear that his quarterback isn't going to SECOND GAME 1 BOSTON Griffin 2b NEW YORK abrhbi Mictiael ss 2 0 0 0 bl 3 0 0 0 3 0 10 4 0 10 4 0 0 0 2 111 RMiller cf Lahoud rf Petroclli 3b Scott lb Oglivie If Beniquei ss Fisk Curtis Tiant Clarke 2b Munson White It FAlou cf Ellis lb Cater Swoboda rf Hansen 2b Baker ss Bahnsen 3 0 10 3 0 3 1 4 0 0 0 10 10 3 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 3 0 10 0 10 0 3 10 0 Mi 3 0 10 3 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 ER BB SO 3 3 2 2 1.3 i.i i FOREST HILLS, -(AP) Astonishing, 16-year-old Chris Evert of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. continued her Cinderella odyssey, upset- ting fifth-s I'rancoise Dnr of 1 ranee, 2-6, 6-2. 6-3 Monday in the women's third-round of the U.S.
