Beloved husband of Rita: dear fathpr nf oay ai me Tunerai nome. I ilb-u. Martin Cnr.Wa Ifl ternative to having her from the J.L. Peters runerai Banking: lively contender on job scene Dear Joyce: What are my career options in banking? H.W., Klamath Falls, Ore. Last year's loosening of government reins sent banks galloping to win customers with interest-paying checking accounts, robot tellers and electronic-funds-transfer systems.

For job hopefuls, the prize is a purse full of computer-related job openings. Despite the machines, tellers continue to make up a large portion of employees in banking. Those who learn the turf can rise through the ranks to banker's status and pay: The upward mobility potential is one of the charms of the career. Among several ways management-aimed individuals can upgrade knowledge are the courses offered locally and taught by bankers through the American Bankers Association. Some banks develop and operate their own training programs.

Other would-be managers attend outside seminars, workshops and banking schools paid for by their employers. Many banks also refund college tuition fees for their employees. At lower levels of responsibility, the pay is modest. A study last year of average salaries not collated for a national picture showed these weekly figures for banking workers in Kansas City: teller $161, Proof-machine operator (check processor) $161, loan officer (non-supervisory) $371.50, file clerk $143.50, secretary $218.50, typist $165, computer operator $211, programmer $276, systems analyst $429. At the highest management levels, salaries skyrocket: The two best-paid bankers in America earned more than $700,000 last year with bonuses and stock-option payments, according to American Banker, the nation's only daily banking newspaper.

Obviously, most managers fall short of that amount, more typically earning in the five-figure bracket, often between $25,000 and $50,000 annually. Among banking functions, operations-data processing is a key area because it supports all other banking services. Presenting banking's best face and anticipating customers' needs are the tasks of the public relations and marketing departments. Other possibilities: the trust, personnel, real estate and lending departments. Look for more information in a 36-page booklet, "Your Career in Banking," available for 75 cents from the American Bankers Association, 1120 Connecticut Ave.

N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036. Also adding to the pool of new jobs are the thrift institutions which are now offering such services as checking accounts. READER SERVICE: Are you up on the latest trends in banking? While not specifically career-focused, this "what's new" reprint from Money magazine will bring you up to date.
