(AP) Bobby Unser broke a three-year victory drought Sunday, sweeping both ends of Championship Auto Racing Team-sanctioned Trenton Twin-Indy tt Trenton International Unser, whose last victory came in the 1976 Ontario 500, finished 1.5 seconds ahead of his brother, Al Unser, in the first 1 ft 1 i I i leg of the twin 100-mile races around the -mile oval. He was six seconds better than runner-up Wally Dallenbach in the second race. Driving his PC-7 Cosworth ground effects racer, Bobby Unser won both $9,405 first prizes in grabbing his sixth and seventh wins at the speedway here. Unser earned the pole position in the second race after posting his first leg win in 49:50, averaging 129.68 m.p.h.

He led for 66 of the 67 laps in the second race, momentarily losing the lead early in the first lap to Gordon Johncock, who finished third and fifth in the two races. 1 i 11 1 i Bobby Unser 'it 4 7 LJ L.J I IMPROVED MILEAGE RATINGS. SURPRISING ROOM AIID RIDL One ride in a Marquis tells you this car is smooth. And your family will happily tell you how roomy it is. It may surprise you, that Marquis offers more combined passenger room and trunk space than either Olds 98, Buick Electra or Cadillac de Ville, based on the 1979 EPA Interior Volume Index.

But nothing convinces you of Marquis' surprising ride better than your own experience of it. Stop in today and give it a test drive for yourself. Johncock, who set a track record in Saturday's trials at 172 m.p.h, held the lead from his pole position for the first 44 laps of the first contest. But Johncock lost the lead to Bobby Unser when he stopped to refuel on the 45th lap.

He fell to the third place when he spun out on the 49th lap. Bobby Unser held a two-second lead going into the 57th of 67 laps when a yellow flag went out, allowing his brother to close ground. But when the green flag was thrown for the 60th lap. Bobby Unser once again took command. There were a total of five caution flags, affecting 16 laps, which helped account for the relatively slow average time Unser posted in the first race.

It was a track record, however, for a 100-mile race. The previous mark was set by A.J. Foyt in 1964, but that was when the track was one mile. The race was the third this year for the newly formed CART group. Johncock took the opening event in Phoenix on March 1 1, edging Rick Mears, who six weeks later won the Indianapolis 500.

Johnny Rutherford was a double winner in the Twin Dixie races at Atlanta International Speedway on April 22. Mears victory in the Indy 500 included drivers from the rival U.S. Auto Club and is not considered a CART race. Kyle Petty's debut stalls RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) Kyle Petty's road racing debut started auspiciously but ejided prematurely Sunday in a 200-kilometer race at Riverside International Raceway, which was won by Tim Williamson.

The 19-year-old son of stock car racing great Richard Petty, started 12th in the 34-car lineup and quickly jumped up to a strong sixth place. Petty took over the lead unofficially on the 16th of 48 laps during a caution period when the other leaders made pit stops. Williamson flew past Petty on the restart. Petty faded to fourth, then dropped out on lap 29 with transmission troubles. He unofficially was posted 15th.

"The transmission started leaking fluid on about the 10th lap," Petty said. "Then it started smoking. Finally 'it wouldn't go in gear, and wouldn't come out of gear. It stuck in fourth, so I just coasted it down through the dirt into the pits." Asked if he knew what started the transmission problems, Petty said sheepishly, "I was driving it. I guess I was responsible for what happened to it.

"I enjoyed it as long as it lasted. In the early going, I was just trying to get acquainted with the race track and the other cars. Asked if his father, a starter in a 400-kilometer event at the same track later in the day, gave him any special advice, Petty replied, "Yeah, he told me to stay out of the dirt as much as possible." Petty won his only other professional stock car racing start, at Daytona Beach, in Febuary. lifo KltWo 'Compare this estimate to the estimated MPG of other cars.
