Mike Epstein's two-run single keyed the fifth-inning uprising as the A's chased Kansas City starter Wally Bunker and scored five times before a batter was retired. Hunter, who was nicked for a pair of unearned runs in the fourth after retiring the first nine Royals in order, finished strongly to bring his record to 6-2, as the A's hiked their American League West lead to games. Peterson. 3,809. Royal -Then Free Press Wire Services KANSAS CITY, Kansas City outfielder Carl Taylor popped up in Sarasota, Fla. Thursday after pulling himself out of the lineup, quitting the team and setting fire to his baseball spikes, glove and sweatshirt. The 27-year-old Taylor told Royals' general manager Cedric Tallis by phone that his mother was ill and that he hoped to have his personal affairs settled in time to rejoin the team early next week.

TALLIS AND Kansas City manager Bob Leman said Taylor would be welcomed back "if he's in a proper frame of mind to play baseball." Taylor was suspended by Lemon Wednesday night during a game in Baltimore. The episode unfolded this way: Taylor grounded back to the pitcher to end the sixth inning, then took his place in leftfield at the bottom of the inning, during which he made a fine running catch of Boog Powell's fly. When he came to the dugout Burns Glove, Tells KC He'll Carl Taylor Taylor told Lemon: "You'll have to get a new leftfielder. I'm quitting." Lemon went into the leading tunnel to the clubhouse to talk to Taylor, who said: "I'm not helping the team and I'm not helping myself. I'm quitting." Several players tried to calm him, and Powell--the Orioles' first baseman and Taylor's stepbrother went Ex-Tiger Great Manush Is Dead SARASOTA, Fla.

Taylor, apparently in a fit of temper, bundled his baseball equipment-shoes, glove and underclothing in front of his locker in the clubhouse and set fire to it.

AFTER THE game won Baltimore, 6-0-Le on kept the clubhouse door shut for 10 minutes. When it was opened, smoke from the fire Taylor had set was evident. Taylor accompanied the Royals by bus to the airport, but refused to board the plane. At the airport, Lemon talked to him again. There were no harsh words exchanged.

Taylor played for Pittsburgh in 1968 and 1969, and St. Louis last year. He was acquired from Milwaukee during the off-season in exchange for catcher Ellie Rodriguez.
