HW i Me wfe" DETROIT FREE PRESS Wednesday, April 28, 71 S-D Friends to Honor Mr. Basketball Cincy Sachs Testimony to how Cincy kept tabs on the local cage talent was his 1943 Auto Clubbers. They won the Sunday Recreation League title, although Sachs used 63 players at one time or another during the season. "The Army kept taking a lot of the boys, you know," he chuckled. Sachs calls his Auto Club team of the early '40s probably the best he ever coached.

It included players like Jack Piana of U-D, who is still associated with the Auto Club; of Bradley the best player he ever coached. "He was stationed at Custer and played with me here during the war," he said. "Another great one was Dr. Carl Gussin, who passed away about three years ago. We'd play the Indianapolis Kautskys and he'd -p 1 a Johnny Wooden, who was considered the best of his days." The friends who'll honor Cincy Monday remember him as more than a basketball coach.

He has helped financially to send many a one to college and many of the ferent. It makes life interesting. I like to meet kids and coaches. I like to do what I do." TICKETS FOR Monday's affair, at $15, may be obtained at all J. L.

How about "Sachs Fifth coaches got jobs through his recommendation or intervention. "Kids have been my whole life," he says and he notes that his testimonial should not be construed as a "retirement part Well on the mend from his heart problems, he's already back to work 3-4 hours a day. "I've been working all my life," he said.

"I could retire, it's not a case of money, but whattaya gonna do just sit and watch TV? "I've always had action and I wouldn't want it any dif A I i tom. I 11 1 I BY JACK SAYLOR free Press Sperte Writer I Philip Sachs never had any formal basketball training as a kid and he has spent the last SO years making sure the same fate didn't befall youngsters in the Detroit area. Philip Sachs? Most of the thousands of players he's had i over the years probably aren't aware that his square name is Philip. He's been "Cincy" ever since he came to Detroit from his birthplace in Cincinnati at the age of 17 to carry on his lifelong love affair with basketball. The 69-year-old bachelor has played, coached and refereed at every level of competition and until slowed by several heart attacks a couple years ago, operated summer clinics for 19 straight years.

NOW, SOME of Sachs' kids are throwing a little bash in honor of Cincy's 50 years of basketball teaching in Michigan. A testimonial dinner will be held next Monday at the Raleigh House in Southfield. Some of the kids aren't exactly kids anymore and a lot will show up with less hair Bobby Roth and Howard Mc-Carty of Wayne, Vaughn Wad-dell, and Leo Beebe, now a Ford Motor veep, and Charley, SPECIAL DOUG SANDERS GOLF CLUBS 8 Irom, 3 woods. He continued through a series of high school, amateur and semi-pro teams, put in a four-year stint at Lawrence Tech and got one shot at the "big time" in 1946, although it was something less than "big time" at the moment. It was also his only exposure to a losing team. IN THE 1946-47 season, the Detroit Falcons were one of the original members of the Basketball Association America, forerunner of the present-day NBA. The Falcons were dawdling with' a 12-22 record and luring Only the players' close relatives to Olympia when coach Glenn Curtis resigned "because of illness" and Sachs was installed as coach on Jan. 25.

Sachs, for 36 years a salesman with Griswold Sporting Goods, is surprised and cited about the affair, proceeds from which will establish scholarships in his name. "Fellas I coached 40-45 years ago have called to say they would come," he said. It will stir memories of the old days and Cincy has a million of them.

He's probably' seen as many games as anyone since Doc Naismith tacked up his first peach basket. "I used to see about 10 games a week during the season high school, college and pro," Sachs recalled. "I used to scout for the Pistons and every weekend I'd go somewhere. "I'd see 150-200 games a year, but I haven't in the last two years. I'm down to about 40-50 now." Basketball with Cincy Is a study in nostalgia.

"The New York Celtics were the best in their day Barry, Lapchick, Holman, Beckman he said, "but players and styles change. It's hard to compare. The Boston Celtics are the best in the last few years." Sachs, a disciplinarian who stressed fundamentals and team play as a coach, says Nat Holman was the best player he ever saw. "He was the Ty Cobb of basketball," Cincy said of the ex-Celtic star and CCNY coaching great. "He was only 6-foot-1, but he was so fast and quick and a good shooter.

"I was busy refereeing, selling sporting goods and coaching amateur teams and didn't want to take over in midyear." "Stan Miasek (an all-leaguer) was a good player and so was Grady Lewis," said Sachs, "but there weren't enough good ones. I was very much disappointed when they didn't try it the second year, but Mr. Norris lost money and quit. "It was a little before Its time here, I guess," he sighed.
